‘An experience unlike any other’ – Japanese gamers heap praise on The Last of Us

It seems even the Japanese have fallen in love with The Last of Us. http://en.rocketnews24.com/2013/06/25/an-experience-unlike-any-other-japanese-gamers-heap-praise-on-the-last-of-us/

Even in the age of worldwide launches, the Japanese releases of Western video games and movies have always been notoriously late, with some titles taking months longer to appear on shop shelves or movie theatre marquees than in other countries. Naughty dog’s The Last of Us is no exception, although mercifully this time Japanese gamers only had to wait six days longer than the rest of the world to begin their digital adventure, which arrived with the addition of a Japanese voice track for those who abhor subtitles.

“I can’t say that the ending was ‘good’,” uttered one Japanese gamer who had played through until the end credits, “but that’s great.” The Last of Us takes on average 12-15 hours to complete, but by goodness it feels longer when you’re crouching behind a desk in the darkness hoping, praying, that the snarling, thrashing humanoid on the other side won’t hear you, or that the door you’re creeping towards a) isn’t blocked or b) a shortcut to a room full of spore-headed ‘clickers’ who use echolocation to spot their prey.

“I was grabbed by the story, but I enjoyed it more because instead of playing the game, per-se, I became immersed in the world it created,” said one journalist we spoke to who had played through The Last of Us. “If we were to liken this to a movie, it would be like something you’d see in a small, independent theatre, but the visuals and voice acting are of a Hollywood standard; that really is something quite new for me.”

Not surprising. It's basically the western twin of Resident Evil. The good Resident Evils. And it has better story / writing / acting.

A game about protecting a little girl is popular in Japan you say?

I'm yet to beat the game and from reading the title alone (avoiding potential spoilers in OP) I agree! No other game does what TLoU does. It's different, and it's pretty good at making that difference. Hope it gets better as I play more! :D

This should have been the first post. Sorry LIK.

Everyone gets one.

I'm really glad that a game that is universally praised in the Western World is making waves in the eastern market though. Not nearly enough games do for one reason or another... The industry in general can do with more popular games becoming mainstream in both markets.

I'm 60% done with the game and I can already say this is the best game I've played this gen.

yeah i was thinking like you when i was at 60 percent, but after i played it through...

MAN THIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED!!! its so emotional in a passive way, the gameplay is great, the story is like a oscar movie....
too bad i am through the game, it was to short to me, it should had never end :)

I was wondering how they would receive it. It's so incredibly different than what they're used to from what I understand. Japanese fiction/film/television from what I've seen is far more "theatrical" given its roots in kabuki theatre. They seem to almost forego naturalistic acting entirely.

I'm glad they enjoyed it, though. The game is good.
