‘An experience unlike any other’ – Japanese gamers heap praise on The Last of Us

Deserves praise, it's an excellent experience. Sales figures and press quotes would probably give a better view of the reaction than unsourced 'gamer' quotes though.

Ellie is so moe

Was any of the (optional) gore censored in the Japan release? Might be a silly question but sometimes I'm surprised by what get dropped from certain regions.

Anyway. That's awesome people in other cultures are loving it.

Games is great, the one downside is that the monster ai becomes super predictable later in the game. But it's like the knew it so they spaced them out and put them in bigger packs. Wasn't enough to stop me from slaughtering them but it was appreciated. Human ai was way more challenging.

Joel is Koichi Yamadera (AKA Vincent in Catherine, Donald Duck in Kingdom Hearts (lol) among many others)
Ellie is Megumi Han (She is pretty new on the scene)

It certainly lends heavily from RE4/MGS3's versus the Western shooters. Seems like a natural fit for the Japanese market.

what a weird article. for every one line of quotation there are ten lines of unrepentant slobbering editorial over every facet of the game with zero critical insight.

Oh boy, those wacky, perverted japanese, right? I mean, they´re totally into underage girls, am I right? It´s hilarious!

A game about protecting a little girl is popular in Japan you say?

This is great, but apparently Ellie can hold her own good enough. That's quality.

This is how it begins. Now every JRPG protagonist will have a beard, and it will be amazing.

First Poland, then Japan, then ZA WARUDO!!!!

I was wondering how they would receive it. It's so incredibly different than what they're used to from what I understand. Japanese fiction/film/television from what I've seen is far more "theatrical" given its roots in kabuki theatre. They seem to almost forego naturalistic acting entirely.

I'm glad they enjoyed it, though. The game is good.

???

After FF7 and MGS? Here, read this interview. Alot of what games like TLOU are built along those lines.

-Really enjoyed Demon's souls, thinks it is very western styled(in the same aspects thinks assassin's creed is a very Japanese style game)

For some reason reading through this thread I imagined Joel with Japanese Ratchet eyebrowes XD

This is true; it's essentially an unpaid advertisement for the game with the occasional quote from an unnamed source - some of whom are described only as a 'gamer'. Exactly the sort of thing the games journalism thread mocks. Granted it's not a gaming site [that much is obvious from the text] but it's a little bemusing to see it quoted and discussed here with such enthusiasm.

Yeah they need to step it up. It's not like it's on us to show discretion as to what's posted here

I'm 60% done with the game and I can already say this is the best game I've played this gen.

<sigh> I've been avoiding this game because it just doesn't seem like something I would enjoy. I hate pretty much every gameplay element it seems to celebrate: stealth, resource management, escorting. I am also turned off by stories set in bleak, depressing futures.

And yet, here I am, once again, contemplating playing a game I know I probably won't like just because GAF says it's so good. Gotta stay strong and resist the temptation.

This game has reminded me why I enjoy gaming so much. I truly felt so immersed that there wasn't me playing a game but rather just accompanying Joel and Ellie on their journey. If you don't have a PS3 this game right here is the only reason you need to get one. Or at least find a friend who is ok with letting you borrow theirs as it is a long game.

Give it a shot. It's bleak and haunting, but also beautiful, heartwarming and humane. Even legitimately funny at times. Such a richly nuanced experience. It's my Game of the Year so far, and I've loved a LOT of releases this year. :)
