‘An experience unlike any other’ – Japanese gamers heap praise on The Last of Us

Apparently not as in the Media Create thread it was reported that it'd had an 80% sell through a day after its release with over 100k shipped.
Very cool.

I seem to remember KojiPro being really scared they were going to get Cero Z because it means you can't advertise till midnight, or they can only be sold in porn shops or whatever. It might be a little different now though.

It makes me wonder if we'll be allowed AO games eventually. The reason we can't is retailers won't stock it, but with DD, that shouldn't matter now.

A game about protecting a little girl is popular in Japan you say?

Game of the generation! Wasn't the japanese dub apparently terrible? I remember someone posting that in the OT.

I don't know, but it sounds pretty good.
I don't speak Japanese.

I think the Japanese VA seems pretty flat, tbh. Joel and Tess in particular seem to be a mismatch. Or at least the VAs didn't understand how to approach their characters.

<sigh> I've been avoiding this game because it just doesn't seem like something I would enjoy. I hate pretty much every gameplay element it seems to celebrate: stealth, resource management, escorting. I am also turned off by stories set in bleak, depressing futures.

And yet, here I am, once again, contemplating playing a game I know I probably won't like just because GAF says it's so good. Gotta stay strong and resist the temptation.

It sounds like it's not for you, but please play it. And when you do just marvel at the sheer quality of it. The art direction, the acting and the overall standard of the story are all exceptional. It might not be to your taste but gaming really has turned a corner. There have been games that have attempted things like this before and worked in part, but not in way like this that hangs together so well and directly challenges other art forms.

My greatest sin for this thread is I haven't even gotten the chance to play the game yet, though I fully intend to, unlike Uncharted which I have no interest in for whatever reason.

It's a good game, so I'm glad they like it. I'm a bit surprised, since it uses a lot of tired western tropes.

“If we were to liken this to a movie, it would be like something you’d see in a small, independent theatre, but the visuals and voice acting are of a Hollywood standard; that really is something quite new for me.”

There should be a spoiler warning about the ending in the thread title -_-
One of the quotes pretty much spells out at least whether the ending will be happy or not.

I don't understand how GAF is getting to the point where by page 3 (or two for you 100 ppp people) we're still quoting a post from page one. It seems to have gotten worse since E3 time where entire Xbox topics would go off topic for pages upon pages.

The stealth isn't that difficult and you can always go in guns blazing to a certain extent if you want. Yeah, I can see why if you don't like stealth you wouldn't be excited about it, but it's more of an option than anything if you are playing on normal. As far as resource management, if you are playing on normal, you always have at least some ammo and the crafting is very easy. The only things you can craft are stuff like shivs, incendiary weapons, medkits and upgraded melee weapons. It's also not really an escort mission-style game. Your partner AI can be dumb sometimes, but they usually fend for themselves.

But yeah, the game is bleak as fuck, so you might not like. There's a particular part in the middle the drags on particularly long. It's not a "feel good" story for the most part, but the relationship between Joel and Ellie and the story is amazing.

Yep, and it's annoying. When it happens I don't even believe 75% of the people quoting it are so impressed they need to respond to it, they just do it to be one of the gang or something.

I would not buy the game based off of reception alone, if you don't want to play it, then don't. Which is what I assume you're doing anyway.

Is this game good in that it's actually really good, or good like uncharted is good but actually isn't very good for people who don't like 'super next gen' game design of epic set pieces and form over function? Or is the story itself at least good, which uncharted also didn't have, the game looks appealing but after the amount of GOTY etc hype the UC series has, i'm a bit uncertain if it's for me.

its game of the generation for me. This game shits on uncharted from the top Everest.

it has really great gameplay. Open spaces where you can approach battles how you want

I can't be the only one that got an old school RE vibe at times with TLOU, JP players should really enjoy it. Hopefully it becomes ND's best selling game in JP and breaks 200k there as well. It deserves it.

The game as a whole really is great, but I felt hindered by the controls when the shit hit the fan. It was clearly never intended to be a twitch shooter, but my lord the swimmy aiming and slow cover system made me rage a few times.

Still very fun though.
