A game that is not "close" doesn't mean it isn't even. This is truer the further down the ladder you go, and I can see that most people complaining about matchmaking are very far down the ladder indeed.

DOTA is a game of compounding advantages. It takes skill and team coordination to overcome a lead, two things that are severely lacking in the lower brackets.

There's only a two things a solo player can do to combat this:

1) Play better. Don't blame the matchmaking, the mode, the feeders, FOTM strats, muting, whatever. The blame game doesn't help you improve. Learning from your mistakes does. Just keep playing until you get out of the worst of the trench.

2) Play carries. Playing support is fine to start out with but if you want to really get your win rate as high as possible as fast as possible then you need to commit to high impact roles. Mid and hard carries are the best for this job.

The issue with this is that you get 4 other people that are thinking the same thing in low tier, (because none of you actually deserve to be there right? You're so much better than those other guys on your team) leading to laning phases where you can get totally screwed over from the get go. Sure, it's got a better shot in low tier, where even winning teams aren't going to seal the deal as quickly as they should leaving you room to farm up after a terrible laning, but I still think it's better to be responsive to the lineup you're given.

It's probably more safe to aim for a high impact jungler, where you won't have to worry about farm competition/terrible laning as much and where you'll be able to farm pretty much harass free if you're in the trench. I like soul ring doom a lot, because it lets me have a major impact on mid and the safe lane while still farming up a carry at a fairly quick pace. Enigma, NP, and LS (although I've grown to love laning ls so much that I have hard time picking him for the jungle) could be other decent picks for high impact, good junglers.

edit: Also, so satisfying stealing a big ult (Roar) as Rubick and using it on the team (a BKB SF as he's channeling his ult) and watching them die (melt).

How could they effectively implement it without locking players into specific regions though?

I mean, they can't tell a russian guy: "no, you can't speak english, don't select english matchmaking".

Not to mention "english" in europe means pretty much "not russian" since there are tons of languages around here.

I imagine it would be very possible to have some sort of filter on game chat that detects Russian or non-English characters? If you use them predominantly then you can't select English matchmaking.

Yeah the hat just looks a bit goofy. Staff is pretty nice, but I don't think it tops the flower one for me.

And as mentioned - textures aren't the best for what the set is trying to accomplish.

I'm stuck in my first match where someone is intentionally griefing and it's FUCKING infuriating. Camping at base or in jungle doing nothing, intentionally feeding himself and the courier, single pulling lanes during the lane phase, pulling when we need creeps, pinging constantly, spamming "Well played!" in chat, even more too. Fuck this guy.

Agree, but if the guidelines are to extend the lore, like wtf trees are not fungi. It would be like making Weaver a cat or something. I'm fine with him wearing fungus armor, but if he is a fucking mushroom . . .

Playing randoms and a razor said, "wtf stop feeding." Only two deaths on our side from different heroes. The third to die was him. He also bitched the whole match until I muted him, and then reported him. The lesson here is don't play with randoms.

Report him and either play out the game or abandon. Neither a kick option or a concede option have benefits that outweigh the risks as well as a guaranteed solution to solve that problem.

That said, I believe that at some point Valve will put in options to mute pings and those chat wheel type sayings.
