The greatest spoiler isn't even the greatest spoiler, when you think about it. But I won't say what it is because THAT would be so spoilers.

I think the greatest spoiler, half the people who played the game and even paid attention to wouldn't get simply because the translation was so bad. The spoiler:
sephiroth actually being Jenova for 95% of the game

guys, it'll be funnier if we don't spoil it and someone makes a long, heartfelt post about it. Think of the schadenfreude.

I thought the most shocking part of the game is when
Barret turn heel because he was possesed by the evil ninja[\spoiler].

Having an issue where it won't sync my cloud saves. Since I reformatted today and was using the cloud saves to keep my progress going I am royally boned right now. Seems I am not the only one going by the Steam forums. Maybe SE's servers can't handle it.

So action packed!

Still digging through the thread, but I'm using my PS3 controller via MotionJoy and need help trying to figure out the game's labelling of controls to what they ought to be on the PS1 original scheme.

Thanks!

Care to post where you got it? How you installed?

Just did this myself. Download the torrent (lol, actually quite fast though) and run the installer. Personally I just created a temp directory on my desktop and installed to it. It created a data folder and another inside that directory. Inside the data folder is a music_ogg folder. Replace your Program Files(x86) - Steam - Steamapps - Common - FFVII - Data - music_ogg with that folder.

This one.

Took a few minutes to understand it. But otherwise, everything sounds great.

Be careful I got the torrent and when I went to install it Malwarebytes popped up it was infected with trojan.delf

F:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\replacer.exe

Not sure if its a false positive

Is there any way to unlock the framerate? I'm getting what appears to be a 15fps lock in battles and a 32fps lock outside of battles. Strange.

Everythings good on my end.

This thread got me to play the PS1 version again. So, what are your character names?

I just finished the Shinra building. So far I have

Cloud = Bulfooboo
Barret = Uaeyuaeau
Tifa = Dropsy
Aeris = spoilers
GoinToDie
Red XIII = Amaterasu

There's so much personality in the scenes and dialog that is just completely lost in the newer games.

Can you imagine the Don Corneo scene in a FFVII Remake? Square couldn't pull it off while keeping it as funny as the original.

I just got reminded how terrible and boring the game's beginning is. Midgar is so boring, can't wait to explore and do stuff in the overworld.

I actually downloaded a save in order to get passed Midgar. I already beat the game back when it released so it's not like I'm missing anything. But yea, I agree.
Also, playing a save file doesn't disqualify you from achievements.

Where can I get this save and how can I install it? Currently going through sector 7 in the Aerith/Midgar thing and auggggggggggggh.

Anybody have a solution for connection errors? I bought the game yesterday and have tried like five dozen times and I still can't start it. It loads to 10% and then tells me I need a working internet connection to play.

In your settings> Network> turn off Cloud Saving. That may help. Also, seems like others are having the 10% issue as well. I didn't have any problem so you may just want to try and delete the game and then download again.

I can't get to the settings menu without logging in...

I've tried redownloading, validating files, the whole shebang. No dice.

I guess the next step is asking for a refund.

It was almost surreal reading "This guy is sick." after seeing the iconic grammar error in the PS1 version all my life. Also, I forgot how creepy the Honeybee Inn section was. I don't think I have ever seen that part before outside of playing the import version way back in the day. Glad to see the game is still loaded with cool stuff to find.

But I really hate the Midgar section and want to get out asap. It always strikes me as so claustrophobic. Can't wait to see how the world map looks in this version, because all the polygonal stuff has looked crisp as hell.

So apparently the Steam version IS modable.

I haven't completed the entire process since I wasn't able to download the mods from the torrent sites. With that being said, everything up to needing the mods did go through as described.

I've successfully modded the Steam version of the game with everything from customer models, to the Retranslation, to modded battle menus/graphics/etc. all using Bootleg.

Oh and..the game doesn't ask for SquareEnix account when I launch it!

It's ...it's pretty amazing. The restored backgrounds (as in: they're not as blurry at 1080p!) are pretty good, same goes for the remastered modded CG movies. The font is much better, the character models are great. It was so, so worth the time.

(there's a mod to get rid of Cait Sith
DOWN TO THE POINT WHERE THEY STRIPPED HIM FROM THE FINAL FMV!
).

Hardcore mode...is hard. I love it. It's probably my favorite of the mods, just because it makes playing the game feel fresh again, even if just a bit.

plutoknight, could you link to the mods you used?

Could you do a quick idiots guide to how you did it?

Has anyone made a propper modding guide to this? Also is this the definitive version after modding or am I better off continuing my PS1 adventure?

Using Tifa's Bootleg? http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13212.msg183580#msg183580

An quick tutorial and a list of some of the best mod would be great. I could put a modding section into the OP.

So I read the graphics mods downgrade the game to the 1998 version, can you still run it through Steam and track playtime or does it have to be launched separately?

See, if I even expand upon *spoiler*, it'll ruin everything for anyone with the temptation to roll over spoiler bars. So I won't. But it's a goddamned *spoiler* *spoiler*.

No, seriously... *la-li-lu-le-lo* aw come on hurry up and have a spoiler thread already!

This actually tempts me to buy it yet again. Any chance of some screenshots with the restored backgrounds?

So i asked this the day it released in Steam thread but never got a full good answer. Is it worth picking up? if i do are there any mods i should keep in mind? I hear people talking about a bootleg version but i have no interest in pirating the game if that is what people are implying.

Someone told me it doesn't use the original music which is easily fixable. I know you can get it cheaper on PS3 but i am more interested in the PC version.

The main thing you have to know about this is that Square-Enix did NOTHING to this game, so natively rendering the game in 1080p (with all the same pre-rendered backgrounds / low quality assets) is about the only thing that was improved, oh and it runs on newer operating systems.

And yeah the music, which is as you said easily fixable.

I heard it's locked at a lower FPS, is that fixable? Or does it matter?

Long as it's not as shitty as the old edios release i think i will go ahead and pick it up. Is there a guide to fixing the music? Also, what mods work with it if they do.

EDIT- I found a quick tutorial on how to get original music. I listened to some of the midi stuff to see just how bad it was before i did the switch and oh my god is it TERRIBLE. Why on earth did they do that? Licensing rights or something?

I gotta admit i was kind of dumbstruck by the fps but i doubt that there's any real advantage when unlocking it (which as of now seems impossible) i figure it's linked to the game's speed which despite the low fps seems completely fine (i'm a high framerate is everything kinda guy).

The game boots up with the Eidos logo so i'm guessing it's that exact version? Never played the original pc version, as for the DRM, it's a one time login for me with a Square account (not even that cause it automatically logged me in) it's a launcher that has a play and settings button cause you can't change resolution/graphics/controls ingame i think.

Personally i feel it's not worth it especially given the price, i would wait and check out some of the mods and see if those would be to your liking and possible on this release, otherwise i would skip this and hope SE makes an actual remake (yeah right..) if not just a remastered version with some better assets cause this release is shameful.

Why the hell is there a mod to get rid of Cait Sith?

After 16 years I'm just now finding out some people don't like him that much.

Using Tifa's Bootleg? http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13212.msg183580#msg183580

An quick tutorial and a list of some of the best mod would be great. I could put a modding section into the OP.

This is exactly what I used. You do lose the ability to get achievements on Steam, plus Cloud Saves and that character booster -- this pretty much reverts the game back to 1998 settings. Bootleg is pretty easy, and the tutorial Grief posted is exactly what I used. You have to download a lot (There is a torrent with every mod Bootleg could possibly use -- it's 17.1GB. You can download them piecemeal, too), and, you'll want to make a Steam backup of the game as downloaded JUST in case.

I could make a guide, but the tutorial linked is much, much better than anything I could whip up. It's a mostly automated process, with the hardest part being downloading the mods -- Thankfully, Bootleg has mod presets that are built in, so it's pretty easy to pick a base and only change a few things (Bootleg also gives you previews of what certain mods look like, so you can choose between Sailor Mars Tifa or ugly Advent Children Tifa without committing to it). It'll tell you exactly what mods you need, and provides you links to download them if you opted to not do the torrent (The links didn't work for me from Bootleg, so what I did was just use The big list of FF7 Mods/etc. and then Ctrl + F'd the file name Bootleg needed)

It'll balloon the size of your FF7 installation to ~10GB as well. And it's not perfect (I can't get the Final Fantasy X Battle menu style working, no matter how hard I try). But it's pretty amazing what it's done to a 16 year old game.

I'll work on getting a few screenshots (I'm in the boring part of the game where battles don't happen a lot..), and if you guys want I can post my preset from Bootleg for others to download, so you can just load it, download the mods, and go (I just took a basic preset preloaded with Bootleg, and changed a few things)
