And the effort for them to avoid spoilers would be minimal as well, and after 15 years, that is where the burden falls. I won't go out of my way to spoil anything for anyone, but if a discussion comes up in a thread about a 15 year old game and the thread isn't clearly marked as spoiler free, I'm going to feel free to discuss plot elements openly without worry.
Well now we're getting into forum policies. If a forum doesn't want to enforce that you put spoiler tags around plot twists in old games, that's up to them. But my own feeling is that you should do it anyway. How can someone avoid spoilers except not go into threads that have SPOILERS in the title? There's just no way. If someone who hasn't played Final Fantasy 7 before wants to participate in this thread, what approach to it could possibly save them from spoilers, if the other posters don't tag their spoilers?

If they want to play a 15 year old game spoiler free, the burden is on them. If you went to their Facebook post and spoiled it in the comments, that'd be wrong. Discussing it on a forum like this though is a non-issue.

Has this game been on Steam for 15 years, with achievements?

No? Then it is not 15 years old. You understand this clearly, but are being deliberately obtuse to cover your idleness, in regards to typing 18 extra characters in a post.

Why?

It's difficult to enforce spoiler rules in threads concerning announcements of re-releases or sequels of games, mainly so if they're over 10 years old.

If spoilers are a problem someone should make a proper OT for this Steam release with rules in the OP and the discussion would be treated accordingly, like in all OTs.

Do achievements change the age of a game? Does Steam?

Someone who skipped an old game or were very young when it came out should avoid threads about that game because I don't know any forums that actually demand you hide spoilers for old games. But that's not the point. The point is whether someone should personally make an effort to hide spoilers, even for old games. I believe you should. It takes very little effort, and failure to do it is potentially very harmful.

The age of the game is useful for forum moderation purposes. It's normal to be strict about new game spoilers and lax about old game spoilers. But as a personal philosophy, it's just cartoonishly selfish to see that you could include everyone in a discussion but choose not to because you're too lazy to use tags.

Agreed. In a proper OT for a game/re-release, spoilers should be included. For a thread such as this where it's simply people discussing the game being added to Steam, price, modding, DRM, then it's up to the poster to decide if spoilers should be used.

There's one thing to talk about spoilers of an old game, movie, etc in the presence of entirely people that have played the game before. But in a situation where there are bound to be people that have never experienced it before, nor is FF7 that much of a pop-culture phenomenon to be up there with Star Wars/Sixth Sense/etc twists, I really don't see the big hurdle in taking the few additional seconds to spoiler things. It's not that reasonable to tell someone "well they should have gotten off of the internet!!" when a newer player was probably not intentionally treading on landmines, but just for information (like how the DRM actually works, problems with the port itself, etc, etc). Like, it would be a completely different ballgame if a new player was going into the Community thread.

But this is really up to the mods and how they want to enforce it in this case.

Adding achievements doesn't make it a new game. Nobody is being obtuse here, the entire culture where it is somehow my responsibility to ensure I don't discuss anything that could be a spoiler for someone is absurd. There has to be a limit, and this example clearly goes beyond any reasonable expectation.

The only thing cartoonishly selfish is thinking everyone else should inconvenience their discussion of a 15 year old game for the sake of a few people who may or may not be interested in playing spoiler free a decade later. That is the definition of selfish.

I personally get upset when people don't warn me before saying the Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father. C'mon man, that shit only just came out on Bluray a couple years ago, it's still a new film.

LOL

people seriously want to spoiler tag for 15 year old game?

Serious? We might as well add spoiler tag for everything. I mean, there must be at least 'one' who haven't played doom 1. right?

Do achievements change the age of a game? Does Steam?

I am not saying the game is not old, I am saying the release is new. Do you understand the difference? It has been newly released as an enhanced version, through a new channel. There are people that have not played it, that had no interest in it until now. This thread may attract those people, and so it would be spoiled for the sake of idleness.

As I said man, it's not about responsibility, it is about courtesy. Do you not generally prefer to be courteous to people, rather than not giving a fuck? It is newly released as an enhanced version on steam. This is obvious to all, yourself included.

For the sake of altering someone else enjoyment of the game, could you not just type those 18 characters, that cost less time that it takes for us to have this conversation? :lol

I personally get upset when people don't warn me before saying the Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father. C'mon man, that shit only just came out on Bluray a couple years ago, it's still a new film.

Does that knowledge alter the way you interact with that film? No.
Can the knowledge of this spoiler alter the way someone plays the game? Certainly.

The comparison is not remotely alike.

You're in complete denial. The inconvenience of having a story ruined dwarfs your inconvenience of having to add spoiler tags to your posts.

Harmful?

Stop turning spoiler aversion into a fetish.

Did you guys know Samus is a girl?

Yes, that's a spoiler kids. If you've ever called her a "she" in a thread, you're just as guilty.

.

What you 2 are suggesting is absurd. I'm glad the reasonable masses are now turning up to show that most people don't have this insane view of spoilers.

I'm suggesting you be courteous to people that come to this thread, and have no knowledge of the game. That is all.

Is that so difficult to understand?

Did you guys know Samus is a girl?

Yes, that's a spoiler kids. If you've ever called her a "she" in a thread, you're just as guilty.

Or.

Hey you remember the first castle in super mario brothers? Princess isn't there pal.

Did you know Alucard is Dracula's son in Castlevania 3?! HOLY SHIT.

or how about you don't play as Naruhodo Ryuiichi AT ALL in Ace attorney 4?

and my favorite:

Contra 1 you fight against ALIENS!!! All those humans in the stage 1 are LIESSSSSSS

Heavens guys. it's been 15 years old. 15. wtf.

Courteous is not going out of my way to hit them with spoilers. What you're suggesting is to spoiler any and all conversation about a plot twist in a 15 year old game. That is an insane viewpoint. Normal, reasonable people do not expect others to not openly discuss a 15 year old piece of media because someone might not have experienced it yet.

Let's take it to its logical conclusion. Thread about Spider Man? Do NOT discuss his uncle dying.

Okay, now you're just saying absurd extremes which are only polar opposites of the extremes the other two are saying. Calling Samus a female might have been a spoiler in 1989, but has not been a spoiler since Return of Samus since the game is really upfront about Samus's identity in each and every single game.

This isn't like we need spoiler tags for the Bible or anything, but the notion is that time and place matters. In a FF Community thread, the poster who has not been spoiled is assuming the risk by going into a topic filled with decade+ long-time fans. In a topic like this, where it is not really an OT but more of an informational thread on the mechanics of the Steam release itself, spoiler markings might not be a bad idea until the OP or a mod gives leeway.

Did you know that Zelda isn't actually the hero of the story? It's actually some guy named Link.

I guess we just disagree on the principle then. I think a kindness that costs you nothing shouldn't be beyond a persons reach. Your argument basically amounts to 'fuck them, I can't be bothered'.

It is one spoiler in particular, not everything about the game. This is why I say obtuse. Because you know this.

I don't see why you guys are getting all up in arms over this. If someone asked me not to talk about plot points to an old story in real life, I'd kindly do so, you know, like a human being. It's one thread, good lord.

Using the Xbox PC controller and by default, the menu button is "square" and the Ok button is "Cross".

Oh hells no.

Calling people who share your viewpoint "normal, reasonable people" is not a counterpoint.

I don't see anything reasonable about your stance. It boils down to your unwillingness to add spoiler tags to your posts because it's inconvenient for you, when really it would take no effort at all, and the inconvenience of having a game ruined is exponentially greater. That doesn't seem very reasonable to me.

I'm curious if you go about this in your day to day existence, because it seems it'd make it very hard to talk about things with anyone.

By no means will I go out of my way to ruin anything for anyone, but at a certain point some personal responsibility must be exercised if you care this much about spoiling a 15 year old piece of media.

But it's spoiling the original Metroid.

That means Nintendo spoiled one of it's own games.

WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN

It is specifically because knowledge of this spoiler can alter the way a person plays the game, considerably. Knowing this when I first played it would have done so, and I first played it years after it launched without knowing.

That is the difference from my point of view, that knowledge can directly impact a persons playthrough of the game, rather than just a random piece of info that does not.

Don't suppose anyone knows if there's a way to get a steam key for this if you already bought it off the squenix store?

Not everyone wants to get in on the joke of stating popular spoilers. I don't care how old it is, you should respect other people and not spoil stories for others.

There's a spoiler tag and it's easy to use.

I'm not unwilling because it is inconvenient, I'm unwilling because the entire premise for why I should do so is absurd.
The premise is that failure to do so will probably ruin the story for at least one person. What's absurd about that?

in FFVII, the biggest spoiler has an impact on the player, and it's one of the most remembered aspects of FFVII, it sticks with people.
it's not the equivalent of "the princess isn't in this castle", which has zero impact.

that scene in FFVII is pretty much the gaming equivalent of the shower scene in Psycho. it's almost impossible to avoid hearing about, but it's a critical point, and it was intended to have a large impact on the player playing it. and, like Psycho, it's disappointing that such a big spoiler in such a classic game is easily seen and spoiled.

it's like if there was a new blu-ray release of Psycho, and there was a thread about it full of untagged spoilers. just tag it, because in a new release, there may be many people interested who didn't watch/play it before. doesn't matter if it's a 15 year old game, it's a new release. doesn't take much effort to tag the spoilers.

SE is bullshiting with this scenario. This is their response:
Hey, just for the heck of it, if you're like me and bought the SE Store version and are steamed (haha) that they refuse to give out equivalent Steam keys as of now, they seem to be listening to comments directed at their blog post of the news: Final Fantasy VII launches on Steam

Their excuse so far:
Phil Elliott - 04/07/2013 14:16
Hi folks, I've passed on your messages regarding Steam keys, but unfortunately it's not possible to give out keys to those who have already bought another version of the game. I understand that's not ideal for folks wanting to use Steam to launch the Square Enix Store version, so sorry about that.

Also, for those concerned about not being able to re-download the game if you bought it on the Square Enix Store previously - you should actually be able to download it whenever you need to. There was an issue with purchases from the North American store, but that's something that's being/has been fixed.

If I can get a key for Xenonauts and a billion other indie games, this is some straight up horseshit.

I loved this game back in the day. Probably my favourite jrpg. But 10 quid is the wrong price for this. I might bite at a 75% sale though, its not worth any more than that.

Anyone know when Steams summer sale starts? I'm really hoping Civ5 might be a part of it.

Possible chance it may be July 11th.

I'll get it when its at least 50% or might wait till its 75% since I still have my PSX version which I bought 10 years ago l0l.

Look. While the two or three of you may be cool with the idea of being assholes, most people aren't cool with the idea of you guys being assholes.

Bottom line: Don't be an asshole. I don't care how old the game is; someone in this forum hasn't played it yet. Don't ruin it for them because you're so selfish that you can't click the
button when you type your post.

Full disclosure:
The "Aerith" thing was spoiled for me on accident: Way back in 2002 or so, G4 had this show called "Pulse", a countdown show, and one episode, they were counting down the craziest moments in video games, or something. And that particular scene was #1. I hadn't played VII at that point, and that spoiling killed my interest. I bought it off PSN last year, but I still haven't logged in more than a few hours at a time due to that spoiler.

See? No problem at all. Because I'm not an asshole...

They havnt released VIII as well, so no :P
If I'm correct, the release of FF VII on Steam marked exactly one year of it's announcement for the SE e-store. I'm going to guess VIII will come out the day VII came out on the e-store, which was in mid-late August.

Do achievements change the age of a game? Does Steam?
Of course! And if they release Star Wars on Blu-Ray, Darth Vad...

Oh fuck you for stealing that. xD Hahaha.

Oh jesus christ, you're telling me you lost interest in playing an entire game because you got spoiled on one plot point, not even the most significant one really? Please, the game doesn't revolve around that one scene. You either aren't playing the game because it's boring you, or because you're procrastinating, stop blaming others.

I don't even know why people make such a big deal out of it. I played it on day one and when that scene happened I was just "huh... ouch, I guess", not "OMGWTFBBQ". "Craziest moment in gaming" my ass. People are so easily manipulated.

Edit: I'm not saying I condone people being assholes and spoiling shit just to be jerks, but I agree there are statutes of limitations. I watched Citizen Kane long after knowing what Rosebud was, and it didn't ruin the movie for me. -_-

They were updating both apps a couple months ago. They then added languages, logos, and icons to both apps. Then they started focusing squarely on the FFVII app.

I would agree that FFVIII will be coming soon.

you're unwilling because you are unwilling to think about what flies out of your mouth/keyboard for more than a second.

"Don't be a dick" is not super difficult, unless you are, in fact, predisposed to being a dick.

If you go into any thread where people go "hey Piece of Media X is being released, I'm gonna go buy it," and you start posting spoilers, you are being a dick.

This is not a difficult concept.

Of course, I haven't played the game, and I will plough through the game and the rest of the series eventually. I don't see how it makes a difference that it's 15 years old. Luckily I only clicked on the last page of this thread, so now worries atm.

Can't wait for this to go on sale, finally I get to play this. Was going to wait for a PS4 release through Gaikai or PSN but this will be great. Of it won;'t be significantly discounted until Christmas/Autumn sales when demand is down.
