Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

It's like going through the dungeons of the original zelda as a roguelike.

It is a mix of awesome music, compelling artstyle, smart random level generator, and tons of contents. Each game lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, just like your usual Dota 2 game, another addictive game: this is the perfect duration of a game you would play once a day everyday of your life.

Im still gonna recommend Kairo, a great exploration/puzzle/light metroidvania game.

Interesting response from the Windosill developer.

Nice to see Windosill in this thread even though I didn't discount it: http://ow.ly/n6g1a

You're welcome! How come it hasn't been on sale since last year?

Because unless they're actually going to promote your game, it doesn't seem to help. At least not in my case.

It's rare to see any criticism of Steam coming from a developer, except for how terrible Greenlight is. Windosill isn't worthy of a daily, flash, or community choice sale? Lame!

It would probably do gangbusters as a daily deal. I can definitely see how hiding it in the corner alongside thousands of other non-daily games might not be great for getting copies of your game sold.

Some games just get left behind.. I tried the demo for Windowsill and definitely didn't care for it. Nice presentation and all but playing Dyad it seems that game has suffered same fate. Better to get exposed in an indie bundle I guess? Given all the repeats maybe Valve should fix it.

It's already on my wishlist, I'll get it at the end of the sale.
In AI Wars, do the massive number of units affect gameplay or is just aesthetic?
They do affect gameplay, but keep in mind that you will be controlling them as groups because it's impossible to micromanage so many units. I recommend you check some videos on youtube to get an idea how it plays, it's a difficult game to get into and there is so much going on, it's not for everyone.

I get the impression they are not treating the La Mulana guys very well, refusing them a spot as a daily or flash deal.

Sounds like a great opportunity for a Humble something.

"The Humble Summer Sale", with individual games rather than a bundle. Perfect for good indies that Valve is overlooking.

This game was released on mobile devices to universal praise and myriad GOTY awards. Didnt know it was released on PC till now

Galaxy on Fire 2 HD - $4.99 (75% off)

The PC version of the award winning mobile game, Galaxy on Fire 2 sets you loose in open space and in the midst of a galaxy spanning conflict. Mine for ore, roam and be a mercenary or pirate or follow the story, customize your ship, engage in raids, dogfights, escorts, and other missions.

Anyone know of any other games like this?

Sounds like Freelancer.
Yeah searched online, found that series and a few others. Too bad Freelancer isn't on Steam. I saw there was the X series, seems similar

Do any allow you to get out of your ship, walk around stations and roam planets? I guess that the upcoming Star Citizen is like that, but I'm definitely not going to be able to run SC

Freelancer lets you get out of your ship, but it's very limited.

A wonderful game to play with friends and family in board game form but the electronic version is just ok. Lots of repeated play over the internet gets old.

Buy the board game. It is a great entry to Euro style board games.

Ahh I see.

That sounds exactly like Darkstar One.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out

So...four days to go in the Sale. How has everyone done so far?

My first Steam Sale has been awesome. What I've gotten:
BLEED
The Binding Of Isaac + Wrath of the Lamb
Pid
Rainbow Six 3: Gold
Mount and Blade: Warband
Gunpoint
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Puddle
Cargo Commander
Incredipede
Garry's Mod
Bastion

And expect for R6, all those are indies. Got to support those indie devs!
Got a hell of a backlog now lol.

(Would GMod be considered indie? Sure it's content for a famous game, but it started as a mod by one guy and isn't exactly a mainstream "game" per se)

You think that's a hell of a backlog? That's cute:)

Again I regret missing Gunpoint. Next time it goes on sale, whenever that is, it will be mine. Once Sunday comes and I go through this thread grabbing anything that looks neat, I fear I'll have more than plenty to keep me busy until then... Speaking of which, how's Pid and Cargo Commander? :)

I gotta just put my 2 cents in a say I bought the two game Lunar pack of Wake and Lunny D... I couldn't stand either of these games. For Wake I found the controls of hold run and jump to climb to be horrible and finicky, my hand was cramping within ten minutes. And since the game gives you zero instruction, I was picking up items that all look the same that I never could find a function for, no idea what I was doing. With the LD game I dropped into an area I absolutely couldn't get out of(went in circles for 5 min), and since neither of these games has a simple pause or options screen I couldn't restart or save, I just had to close the window. Only a buck + wasted, but I would not recommend.

Welp...

It finally happened to me. That feeling when you look at a game in the OP and you are like, "this shall be mine!", only to search on steam and have it say "this game is already in your library".... *facepalm*

Never thought it would happen to me lol. The game in question was "Sword & Sorcery". Anyway, thanks for the suggested games, i have put 3-4 on my wish list and will wait until they either become a daily deal or the last day before purchasing.

I looked at games like English Country Tune (considering a purchase) and remembered I have Steam keys for those games from Humble Bundles.

As a new PC gamer and Steam user, yes that's a hell of a backlog

On vacation, so I haven't played Pid yet but I did play Cargo Commander before I left and it's fun. It's an action platformer with roguelike elements...in space! So there's shifting gravity, zero gravity with limited oxygen, different types of weapons and various upgrades, destructible environments, a mad rush back to your base as black holes destroy your environment...

Here's a good review I found:
http://www.newgamernation.com/review-cargo-commander/

Apparently it's something that they want to get away from.

Bummer. The soundtrack mechanism on Steam is pretty shitty so I can understand them not wanting to keep supporting it, but it's still convenient to get soundtracks cheap when the game goes on sale. :P

I get the impression they are not treating the La Mulana guys very well, refusing them a spot as a daily or flash deal.

I can't really blame Valve much for rejecting any given indie title for daily sale -- their goal is to provide maximum exposure to stuff that will benefit from it, and La-Mulana -- a notoriously difficult and punishing game -- probably isn't the best candidate.

(Putting a rebadged War Z on daily sale, however, I can totally blame them for.)

I've passed twice on Gunpoint and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I want it, but I had a serious backlog even before this sale and it's never something I've been dying for. I just splurged on Torchlight 2, which I didn't even really want, and it just sets it back that much further. I'll get it in the winter sale, I guess.

Sadly Valve won't let me sell my soundtrack through Steam, though we did remaster it and have it available here: Dust: An Elysian Tail - Official Soundtrack

Yeah, Steam didn't want our La-Mulana soundtrack either. We had to end up keeping it on Bandcamp to sell.

In the light of something like War Z being part of dailies, I'm even more puzzled than before. La-Mulana is niche. Fine. I know that, but there are people out there that would actually love the game if only they knew about it.

But no, they get to see War Z instead.

I have neglected Indie games for a long time...

I have been playing the hell out of Don't Starve. I also find Reus and Terraria quite fun as well. I am starting to get into FTL which is starting to become a blast. I think I am starting to really appreciate the time that went into games like these. Don't Starve has amazing artwork and sound. I love the atmosphere.

I noticed Primordia was put up for a vote but did not win. I was bummed because that games atmosphere looks so great. Anyone here played it? Is it worth the $5.99, normally $10.99, price? It looks so good.

It has been part of two recent indie bundles, so if it is worth it for that price depends on how you look at it.

Either way, it may still be a flash or daily deal so wait till the end.

Thanks! :)

Out of curiosity, have you played it?

Yes I have but only briefly.

I know there are a lot of people who wanted to buy it and it seems to be very popular and I'll be shouted down...but I have to say it is nowhere near as good as I thought it would be based just on the screens. I'd get better recommendations first before buying.

Just wanted to shout out to Toma thanks for the thread as usual and also wanted to mention his constant cheerleading for Reus was the tipping point the other day and I bought it(I had my eye on it already, but still). So I played through the tutorials and enjoyed it very, very much!

Still, both this and Gunpoint....the text is completely unreadable for a couch gamer like me. I really wish companies would give me some options. But heck, even Windows is pretty substandard on text scalability. This is going to be a problem more and more as other gamers get HTPCs and the eventual Steam box...

Orion Dino Horde, Dino D Day, Primal Carnage...

Are there any dinosaur games on Steam that aren't crap and have some form of offline play (bots are fine)?

Yeah, Steam didn't want our La-Mulana soundtrack either. We had to end up keeping it on Bandcamp to sell.

Can't you just link to the soundtrack in the game description? Should give you at least a small boost in visibility.

Can it be that you are on Valve's shitlist due to breaking the Summer Sale date NDA on Twitter?

Been waiting to see if I can snag La-Mulana for ~$5 if not it'll be a final day purchase for me but I'm really bummed that Dustforce hasn't been discounted. I mainly want the game to support the devs and in appreciation of the great OST but the price is outside of my impulse buy range.

That's just it. I tried the demo for Gunpoint and really liked what I played. Much more so than a certain couple of games I picked up during this sale and regret (to be fair, I didn't play them much yet). Though as you say, between my Steam backlog and iOS backlog I have no business getting any more games:)

Sorry you guys and Noogy are getting shafted. I didn't know that Dust's soundtrack and La-Mulana's soundtrack were available to purchase. I'll be picking both up when I get my next paycheck.

I hope the sale causes more people to pick up the Eschalon games. The exploration has some of the best hidden secrets and wandering style of gameplay I've experienced. Find a note in a treasure chest that leads you to 45 minutes of lurking through a dungeon, solving puzzles only to find a key and spend another 30 minutes looking for more goodies.

Have to give a thanks for the general recommendation of E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy. The hud and character options seemed very confusing and intricate at first, but were grasped quickly and I spent 3 straight hours playing without realizing it.

Nope. This isn't a new thing. This has been going on for months now.

Might be some internal squabble between guys responsible for handling Greenlight and the rest of the team then.

As much as I like Steam for, well, most of the stuff they do, some of their decisions are really weird.

1. Communicate to the devs that OST DLCs are not available anymore.
2. Release FEZ afterwards with OST DLCs.
3. ???

I know Valve isn't a charity, but why don't they double the number of flash deals, pick half of them to be less known indie titles and call them indie flash deal? This way they can keep on putting the same popular games on sale for the third or forth time and still highlight indie games.

I have been active on Steam since 2010 and the impression I got following indie games on steam during this time is that Valve has some darlings (Dejobaan games comes to mind). Unless you are either a top seller or a darling, you won't get much attention. La Mulana was rejected before greenlight, so probably nobody at Valve cares for the game and as it is not a top seller, you don't get a better treatment.

I fully agree. Between this, dev OST woes, non-existant community contests (summer sale 3 years ago comes to mind), the card monetization and Greenlight shit devs have to wade through, I am really souring on Steam atm. But oh well, here I am, making a thread for them so that people actually buy some games from some other devs that deserve it.

Does anyone consider Natural Selection 2 as an indie game? It's a great game that's constantly updated and is expecting another big content patch at the end of August. It looks great and now performs well after the last few updates.
