makes me sad to see people lump in Pacific Rim along with Speed Racer or Scott Pilgrim. Pacific Rim isn't even a quarter as good as those films.

I had read some of the books by the Warrens, I had no idea they were making a movie based on them. Much less one that would hit #1 at the box office.

Next weekend will be the first weekend in awhile that we can't talk about an opener bombing. The Wolverine is the only thing opening wide, and tracking on that is looking pretty good.

The Wolverine looks really awesome.

can we talk about how convoluted the X-Men film universe chronology is?

it just gets crazier every year.

Does PR have a tie in game and is it any good?

Yes to the first part, no to the second.

I am keeping my expectations low, but it could be a fun action flick. I've always liked the comic storylines involving Wolverine and Japan.

Yeah, we're getting a new X-Flick on an annual basis these days.

Not surprising. After the Avengers, Sony and Fox are going into overdrive with all their Marvel properties.

It's sort of funny that Azaezel and Darwin made their way to the silver screen before Wonder Woman and the Flash. Fox is going to run out of mutants before Warner Bros even gets DC's big seven on film. Can't wait to see Maggot and Eyeboy in one of these flicks.

Now where are all the people who said that Man Of Steel will make $300 domestically? Come out, come Busty and co.

there were no toys??? man, did WB want this movie to fail?
There are a grand total of three Pacific Rim action figures. All of them are sold at a 15-20 dollar price point and are only sold at specialty stores like Toys R Us instead of big box stores like Target and Walmart.

Not only that, but the company they gave the toyline to (NECA) underestimated the demand and most likely cut costs on production because of the failure of their Prometheus line. So all the first wave Pacific Rim figures have paint and articulation issues and no accessories. They're still fun toys and it's clear NECA will give more of a shit now that they're selling like hotcakes, but it's obvious the company wasn't producing their normal quality of work.

Pacific Rim needed a completely different style to be big. It needed to be more Evangelion, and less.... kids toys.

Transformers 1 didn't have stars.
Transformers really banked on the Evangelion style.

Not saying they did, but they were clearly more stylish than the original transformers. Transformers need to remind you of vehicles and also have facial expression though. The comment was about the use of stars anyway.

With Evangelion I meant something that is sleek and stylish, and has a more realistic tone around it. Instead of Pacific Rim that looks completely unrealistic even though dark, mechs look too much like kid's toys, and unfortunately there wasn't a single star in the movie. Too much of a disconnect for an audience. The marketing wasn't able to counter it because it was a really hard sell.

If the movie had been of amazing quality, there would have been hopes for some great word of mouth but it seems like it didn't reach that high.

Sorry I misunderstood you.

I think the Transformers effects are still impressive now and helped the movie gain hype and love back in its day. It's clear that there is a lot going on and the transformation sequences look fluid. Now, the designs tend to suck, but the effects looked far more impressive at a glance back then than Pacific Rim's robots do now.

You said it would be lucky to pass $270M after that first weekend. It should finish with $290-295M. The $300M people weren't that far off. The movie's legs really fell apart in these past two weekends, but the film was in a good spot to hit $300M before that.

Well it's a good thing I didn't bother watching Pacific Rim then.

As far Speed Racer goes, I turned that shit off 30 minutes in when it was on cable TV.

A steaming pile.

Finally a superhero franchise that stays faithful to the spirit of the comics.

Just waiting for some Xorn business to wrap this all up in a bow.

Finish it. I was in the meh category until one race, and this happened:

Something so ludicrous and out there it just made me laugh. I was a goner at that point. The movie is silly beyond belief, but that is the charm of it.

Screw it. We need a Fast & Furious/Speed Racer cross over. There would be too much implausibility in it that the universe would explode in a colorful mushroom cloud of awesome.
'Bound'destroys everything The Wachowskis made outside of 'The Matrix'.

There were no visuals in that.
The Gina Gershon/Jennifer Tilly sex scene begs to differ. :)

But Bound is a pretty damn great film.

Why the Lautner hate? He's just a kid. Twilight checks will probably keep coming in, enough for a modest home in the San Fernando Valley. He can get fat and do autograph signings as he grows bald.

Scott Pilgrim > Speed Racer = Pacific Rim

they all have some glaring negatives. but in the grand scheme of things they're so fun that i don't mind.

the more I think back to the rim and talk about it with friends, the worse it gets for me lol.

Worst major script of 2013 i think.

really cool IDEA. pretty sweet action scenes.

script is bad, though honestly i don't think the director is anything special either. the boredom of the hellboy franchise reminded me of the lull in this film between the action scenes. and burn gorman was indicative of del toro's crap humor in the past. plus he doesn't really seem to get good performances out of his films.

but i hold this as a fun film because of how awesome it was to see this idea brought to life. i wish it was a success so more films of it's ilk by more interesting directors could be brought to the screen.

Variety a bit more positive about Pacific Rim:

"And proving a tad more resilient after last weekend’s disappointing opening, Warner-Legendary Pictures’ “Pacific Rim” fell 57% in its second frame, with an estimated $16 million. That’s still a sizable drop, though it could have been steeper given the competition. Overseas is a brighter beacon for the monster mashup, with more than $110 million and $178.5 million worldwide."

Alright, I can admit when I'm wrong. If MOS doesn't hit $300m in the US then I would have been incorrect but it's not as if it's going to be miles off that number.

But in saying that I wouldn't gloat too much if I were you.

Even a broken watch keeps the right time twice a day.

I really like Guillermo, but I just think he works better with a R rating and horror elements. I'm glad he got a movie like Pacific Rim out of his system though. The guy deserves to be happy.

The previews for PR were awful. It's a shame shit like Transformers coasts off it's name while people outright ignore good movies like PR.

I think people who say MoS numbers are a disappointment need to look at the situation. 12 wide releases have come out since its second weekend, including 1 300+ movie, 1 250+ movie, and one 200 movie. Its competition was insane, The Avengers, TDK, and TDKR competition in comparison was fucking garbage. Go look up to see what came out after those. It was never realistic for it to have legs like those movies. Too much competition just quickly killed its screen count. That said, it did a great job against the barrage of at least 2 movie releases a week.

WB telling him to go ahead and write a sequel doesn't mean a whole lot. They are just being cautious to be prepared, but it in no way is it a green light.
