PR doesn't look like a bomb. It still needs to release in some major foreign countries, and its close to breaking even with its reported production budget. It might do good, not great, but good. And may even get a sequel when all is said and done. That is, if Legendary decided it needs its own fully-owned franchise.

Just because something isn't a huge success in its first week in the US, doesn't mean its a bomb :p

Your right that its not a bomb, but a sequel is a dream at this point. The rule of thumb when it comes to BO, is that a movie need to make 2.5 times its budget to be profitable from theaters. The 200 million marketing budget for PR almost assuredly does not include marketing. This movie will not me making money unless it absolutely fucking explodes in asia, because home video sales will be less than 50 million and making another CG heavy sequel will not be cheap.

Most women I know seem to think Charlie Hunnam is very attractive (and then start arguing over whether he's hotter with long or short hair).

But yeah, probably doesn't fulfill the second part of that statement because he doesn't have the big name.

You don't necessarily need a big, established name. There's a certain inside game that is often played in Hollywood to "create" new stars. Chris Hemsworth wasn't in anything of major note before Thor, at least not as a main actor. But he was being discussed as a potential A-list actor who could be the lead in a big film. Thor happened to be that film for him. It's worth noting that he was shirtless in the trailer and much of the initial promotion for the film, as was Henry Cavill in Man Of Steel. That type of specific marketing exists for a reason, and drives many women to the theater. I don't think many people, male or female, give a shit about "Thor" the comic character, but the film was a major summer action film with a handsome lead. Naturally it attracted a solid male audience, but was pushed over the top by females. .

The same is true of a lot of comic films that become major hits. Batman (Bale), Man Of Steel (Cavill), Captain America (Evans), etc all feature very buff lead actors. While the IP is important, it doesn't guarantee success without solid leads (see: Fantastic Four). In short I think the film would have done better if more focus was placed on the lead actor instead of "giant robots fighting aliens." That concept is always going to put some males in the audience, regardless of how much you harp on it. But getting the romance and attractive male lead (preferably shirtless) more prominence in the trailers would have been a more effective way of selling the movie IMO.

It's just sad, poor del toro. It was released just this week in holland and i hope it will do good but i do not have high hopes for it. Still wanna see it though.

I think he knows he made a great kaiju vs robots movie. He knows the audience for that kind of thing appreciates his work. It's just that the audience for that kind of thing doesn't compare to the audiences for Grown People 2 and Despicable Sequel 2.

Yeah i will love it also,he makes movies what other people also so like and i think blu ray version will sell like hotcakes and becoming a cult movie for sure.

Wait, wait, wait.

Ryan Reynolds was tapping Scarlett, and then broke it off?!

Suddenly I don't feel so bad for GL and R.I.P.D.'s performance.

del Toro seems firmly settled into a position where he'll be able to keep making shit he's into, regardless of how long it takes him and how many failed projects he has to leave in his wake first.

He'll be back. Hopefully with that DC movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if that goes nowhere now.
and then he could shack up with Marvel and do a Ghost Rider film or something

I think Pacific Rim would have been a very different story with just one big recognizable star to help carry it. Such a shame.

Well they nearly got Tom Cruise to play the role that eventually went to Idris Elba. Though I'm sure that would have changed the entire film.

Nobody puts Tommy in the corner.

there were no toys??? man, did WB want this movie to fail?

Legendary controls the Pacific Rim IP not Warners. So it was Legendary that set about getting licensing deals etc.

Let's just say that it was their first effort and not having a powerhouse like WB Consumer Product Division fully in their corner might have hampered their efforts.

Everyone discounting Ryan Reynolds LOL

Guy a load of movies in the works(DeadPool, Queen of the Night, The Voices, etc..)

Worst case he will fall back on 100 mil+ Rom Coms like this-

Some might argue Blake Lively is an upgrade. I would probably call it a lateral move myself.

Either way, he stays winning.

too many, if you've got a recognizable name. I mean it's not like he's Taylor Kitsch. LOL

nah, he'll do a couple of Indies and be back w/ another flop. LOL His name still carries 'heartthrob' weight so studios won't kick him to the curb until something better comes along.

he needs to be more discerning w/ his roles, tho. Really.

i felt bad for him w/ that Disney channel action flick. SMH
Yeah, anyone that thinks Reynolds is finished is living in a dream world. He's good looking, has some talent and people are indifferent about him for the most part.

Also Taylor Lautner could not act his way out of wet paper bag. He stinks and good riddence.

Fucking hell are you his agent? Because if you are it would explain a lot.

"Hell Universal? Yeah I have an actor for your RIPD movie. People are pretty indifferent about him."

Isn't this is the highest opening for a R Horror movie? Either way The Conjuring deserves it. It's the best movie of the summer so far (better than Pacific Rim)

Lol if I was I would be laughing all the way to the bank. But really in this day and age, being indifferent about a actor is not all that bad.

Edit also you made laugh pretty good, thanks.

Nope, just pointing out that like

Snakes On A Plane

Scott Pilgrim

Sucker Punch

and now Pacific Rim, the internet gets behind a movie early and sometimes that carries over after they have seen it (unlike Sucker Punch) and then guess what?

The movie fails because the internet =/= general sentiment.

Pacific Rim will end up making close to 2x as much as all those movies combined worldwide on about the same cumulative budget. That's still not enough to make Pacific Rim a success, but it's not on the same level as any of those films you mentioned. Prince of Persia is a more fitting comparison.

Horse face, small boobs and no ass.

I know they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but really, now?

So you're telling me that if she came up to you right now, and told you she wanted to make sweet sweet love all day, you would turn her down? I highly doubt that.

As suggested I don't think Ryan Reynolds can carry a film as the lead. That's not to say he's a bad actor and isn't good. He's good but he's good as apart of a cast with the spotlight being on him. It's also possible he isn't summer blockbuster leading man material and might do better in other genres or out of the summer slot where fatigue can easily set in.

RIPD always gave off that Men in Black vibe (as suggested that certainly had to be the pitch) and that was part of why I was interested in it. However not as interested as I thought as I didn't bother going to see it. Other things more important came up. I do want to see it when the blu-ray comes out though.

RIPD wasn't a good movie, but I won't place much of the blame on Reynolds who was really no worse than a serviceable action hero. The parts of the movie where he was above average showed that he's better suited for rom-coms.

I was disappointed with Jeff Bridges, though, because I expected more from him. He was really great in Men Who Stare At Goats.

I never said that. I was only making the comparison to Scarlett.

Also, Scarlett has a much better first name as well.
