How would YOUR GAME use the WiiU Gamepad?

Asynchronous gaming can be cool but you have to make the right game for it

Zombie U sort of does this for its multiplayer (albeit at a very, very low level). Still, it's tons of fun if both players know what they're doing.

I would make a kind of open world monster collecting game where the pad would, among other things, act as a sort of index cataloging all the monsters you came across and/or caught.

Didn't know that about zombie u's MP

If they ever drop the price of the Wii U and I get it, will definitely check that out :D

In Halo use the Wii U gamepad screen to see behind you, the view which you cannot see on the TV screen, to make sure no one is behind to assassinate you. And if there is anybody trying to shoot you from behind, just simply touch the gamepad screen to do a 180 degrees turn!!

Oh yeah that would be awesome!!!

Okay fuck it, lets go all in. You'll all know I'm one of Nintendo's harshest critics on these boards, and part of that is because I feel they dont have their finger on the pulse with regard to technologies available to them. Even though they've made the GamePad, they can't seemingly figure out the must have ways to demonstrate its value. But here I go:

First up, welcome to the stage Takeo Igarashi. Guy is some kind of genius with regards to manipulation software technologies, but we'll focus on his most game applicable one: Teddy. There are two versions, the one of old, and a newer one, but for me, the full realisation of this tech came in two PS2 games:
FE3ts2W.jpg
BwnMZzr.jpg

Licensing Teddy and combining it with animation engines, the presumably now dead Garakuda Studio enabled creative people around the world to use a DualShock and create fully rigged and fairly astounding looking beasties that get plopped into those respective gameworlds, (one a Pokemon clone, the other a naff 3D Platformer)
Heres a random vid of an individuals highlights, but Youtube has a whole bunch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6L8Iu1W7jo

Now if only there was some kind of console that came with a pen, LCD screen to draw on, and a lot more oomph than a PS2 (sorry 3DS), HD, and online capabilities. OH ITS A WIIU.

Suddenly, with one technology you swing open the doors on possibilities only possible on WiiU.
- A Persona style RPG game where you create your summons. Whether you create them for hours in an editor, or you apply a skill and Pictionary based timer that forces you to doodle one up in the heat of battle and under a time-limit. I actually have an entire storyline and concept for just such a game, but I'm loathe to just shit my stuff away for free ;)

- Take it to another genre, and both Portal and Quantum Conundrum play liberally with 3D space and puzzles. If you could draw 3D objects to solve certain puzzles, or go even beyond and start drawing 3D routes in realtime, you start exploring something like a Kirby Canvas Curse but in the 3rd dimension.

- Steam and Hats. Amateur modellers. A real economy. Huh, where could we go with that? What else is big? DOTA2, League of Legends? Make beasties of course. Oh you just got Nintendo's Gameboy Pokemon level success for home consoles. So you dont just create the best stats yourself, you can tie that to random gatcha gems or whatever you affix to your created beasties that determine their stats. Make the whole thing F2P, money influx. Could also choose your top created beastie to follow your Mii about on Miiverse for more display to would be investors...

- Takeo is also the creator of some software used in some fashion areas called Sweater where you can create clothes for 3d objects and animations. Remember all that Xbox 360 earl day bullshit with markets with clothes and skateboards? Yeah, well the tools have always been there.

Of course you'd have to beef up Nintendo's "dick recognising" Miiverse software for 3D detection for any of this stuff to be Online Ready, but moderation and parental limits in place, you've suddenly created a whole new console avenue that casts the GamePad as the perfect tool and extension to such experiences.

NO MORE IWATA. YOU PAY ME FOR MORE.

I would love to see a big co-op game that uses the TV and Gamepad as second screen.

The gamepad shows an alternate game world to the one shown on the TV to solve puzzles, defeat enemies, etc

Open World: once you set your destination the gamepad becomes a full blown nav system.

Some type of multitasking game. You try to do stuff on your TV that constantly interchanges with something else on the gamepad. This is crazy but what the heck, you control an infected human in an open world game, and on the gamepad you control your inmune system fighting against the infection.

SP game where a second player takes command of some of the enemies in the game. This player respawns after he is killed. Boss fights would be amazing. If there is not a second player the AI takes over completely.

RTS game: a simple RTS game would work a lot for the gamepad.

An adventure game were you can explore with the gamepad on all directions.

Dungeons and Dragons game with the Game Director using the Gamepad.

Coop game, TV player is action game and Gamepad player is an RTS, all in the same world.

I am available Ninty, just contact me and we will do business.

Something like Fractured Soul. Or something like Four Sword Adventures, where you drop onto the Gamepad when you enter certain areas.

Different gameplay styles on the screen and the pad, like when you die on the main screen, you fight your way back on the pad in a platformer or something.

JRPG menu, or action RPG, use pad to draw symbols for magic. Play the whole game as a sorceror, touch screen is your book. Or an Avalon Code sequel, where you manipulate the code of enemies and NPCs on the touchscreen and play on the main screen.

Etcetera.

It could be an adjustable rear view mirror in a driving game. In the higher difficulties it will require frequent adjusting every time you hit a bump in the road, make a hard turn, brake really hard, or hit something.

I'd do a Fatal Frame [come on Nintendo!].

The Game Pad would be used to capture/seal the evil spirits/ghosts out to get you. They wouldn't visible on the TV, so you would have to constantly go back-and-forth between your TV and the Game Pad during gameplay. There would be warnings and such on the TV that something might be getting close [maybe a bell or something that would chime, but wouldn't always occur to keep suspense] in which case you'd hold the Game Pad up and use it to aim your Camera Obscura. Get the spirit/ghost in-frame, snap the shutter, and seal it.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever get another Fatal Frame. It's horrible depressing too, I love the series and feel it could work very well on the Game Pad.

I was going to post Fatal Frame too. And you can use audio from the WiiU pad to make it even creepier.

Then obviously it's not easy.

You get a zero.

Also I'm repeating myself, but I want another Canvas Curse already. That'll work on the Wii U, so let's go with that.

It's easily the best idea here. If Nintendo wants to make money they'll do it.

As a fifth player monitor in the Rock'n Roll Racing 3D Remake :D

As an extra controllable ship in a Metroid Game

As a device to interact with NPCs

Mounted on the Wii U Zapper as a means to shoot stuff. Potentially great for "arcade-y" games.

As a motion sensor in an Alien Game that doesn't suck

As a way of inventory and map mangement NEXT to 1:1 Wiimote Motion Controls in Skyward Sword 2 or IR pointer controls in Metroid Prime 4 (just imagine having your ship interiors on the Wii U Gamepad next to you on a stand - fucking cool. Since your index finger can be used easilly while holding the Wiimote [try it - it's really easy] you could interact with the Gamepad by pressing buttons to start your ship and such)

I would also use the Wii U Gamepad as a primary controller in any Flight Sim or Ace Combat game. Imagine useing the Wii U Gamepad's 9 axis gyro controls to fly your yet and the screen as a way of doing ground bombardment.

For everything Amikrogg will be doing with it :)

As a Co Op screen for Co Op games.

As a Video Call Chat device while playing a game.

AS A device to receive phone calles in a Metal Gear Solid Game :D

As a top down view of a golf ball 'as it lies' - for me to then hit with a wiimote golf club.

Hang on a mo...I've seen that somewhere?

Third person horror-sci-fi/supernatural-detective/crime adventure game where the protagonist suddenly starts to "see" the world differently for whatever reason.

On the TV you would look at a normal third person camera view.

max_bar.jpg

On the GamePad you would see a first person view of the "real" world as the character sees it.

EV5.jpg

Complete with with humans who are actually demons/aliens/monsters in disguise. Apartments that are actually monster dens or whatever, and a bunch of stuff that doesnt even manifest in the normal world.
Normal world would be mainly for exploration, problem solving and figuring out what the fuck is going on. Fucked up world view would have you engage and/or expose these "evil imposters".

Think a cross between the "The Matrix", "Constantine" and "They Live", in tone.

As radar in ALIENS. Standing in room, suddenly the pad in your hand shows a blip. Then another. Then another! And it's inside the room, man! That's inside the fucking room!

Game over, man!

EBA Wii U.

To everyone who posted in this thread. Shame on you for recommending this. Your game sucks, every. Single. One of you. Especially yours.

Not really, Pie and MYE have surprisingly good concepts, hatchx is also fantastic if only because it references EBA :P

Finally, a thread where I can share my awesome idea.

The game is called Monkey Drummer.

On the gamepad, one player is playing similar to EBA, in that they are taping the screen like a rhythm game.

On the main screen, a second player is playing a 3D platforming adventure! The catch is you have a team of monkeys following you similar to Pikmin. Maybe up to ten monkeys, and different types depending on levels.

Back on the gamepad, the player would play whatever rhythm they wanted, and it would correlate to the monkeys doing different, learned behaviour in order to help the main player. They could setup a monkey ladder, build a monkey bridge, fight, etc. The longer they hold the ladder/bridge, the faster/harder that rhythm gets. Same with fighting and the challenge of enemies.

The game would encourage a lot of communication between the two players. The idea shines with co-op (as I feel most gamepad ideas will), and there is a lot of places it can go.

Basically thats the same thread: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=623891

I always thought that some kind of local competitive tower defense would be pretty cool.
Guy A coordinates and controlls the waves on the Pad.
Guy B builts up the defense.

Guy A has a variety of troops and vehicles and has to think of tactics to get trough the defese.

Guy B has a variety of things he can built to defend the base or the tower or whatever.

Welp, it's got that NFC thingy... Is it possible to use that for a card battling RPG? Could be kinda cool maybe, say in a Baten Kaitos sorta way?

Also, why not a horror game that requires you to actually pan around to see what's behind you on the second screen? Surely that's doable? I dunno, I'm just throwing shit out there lol

Golf.

Course map
Mobile camera, as with StreetView
Ball lay and swing tracker, as in Wii U Sports teaser

Potentially the best golf game ever made.

Do you want people to have to "constantly" pause the game for item management? Do you want the TV "constantly" cluttered with HUD elements that you rarely need?

Why couldn't I just press a button to quickly bring a menu or a map on the screen I'm already looking at? Being forced to look at the gamepad breaks my immersion. Also, I don't like holding it up and looking around or aiming with it. Unless Nintendo releases a head mount to create some sort of poor man's VR headset.

There's an issue with that though. If you're sitting down, that's a pain.

I noticed it with Frobisher Says and any game that required you to do this was immediately more annoying than any other.

Ah, so you would use the Wiimote/Nunchuck instead? Or maybe the Wii U Pro Controller? Balance Board? A combination of all of it?

I'd like to hear more of your creative ideas.

Great now all I can think about is some terrible game made to utilize the balance board and gamepad at once

"Must get though this dungeon but if I don't hold the crane position I lose points"

I'm sure Nintendo will turn out something that truly validates the gamepad effectively

Just not sure they will do in time

Advance Wars x Battalion Wars:
Real Time strategy on gamepad and control a unit on the TV.

Ghost Trick U:
Control 2 spirits. One on gamepad to interact with objets, while the one on TV would show you stuff you can't see on gamepad

Zelda Majora's Mask:
Main game on TV, while gamepad would be Moon's view. The more the clock goes forward, the more the moon gets closer to you. By the way, Moon's view would be like top down Zelda, but also allow you to see secrets.

Survival Horror title:
Remember Clock Tower on SNES ? TV screen would be first person view of your character, while gamepad would be first person view of a creature chasing you at random occasions.

There's a lot of cool ideas you could do with the gamepad.

I'd buy 10 copies!

Hmm... Bummer, I thought initially this would be more immersive, but I see what you're saying.

What if... The TV shows the players progress in a psychological horror/serial killer type game and the second screen simply shows the killers progress in tracking you down? Simple idea, but could be pretty effective for inducing some tense moments...

Edit: lol Or RE Nemesis 2?

I posted this in the other thread but the potential to combine an RTS and FPS/TPS game is interesting to me

Gamepad Player is the commander

1 - 3 other players on wiimote or pro are hero characters that lead units and are significant parts of the battle

Another game mode would be the Gampad player army versus the heroes army

Idea can be extrapolated to hack and slashes (kessen/dynasty warriors), Modern shooters (Halo War/Halo), or even space ship wars

Cartoony, sci-fi puzzle/platformer/adventure game-- think LucasArts adventure game mixed with Banjo-Kazooie.

- Basic platforming controls (run, jump, climb, jetpack, etc)
- Medium-large interactive world with lots of characters and side quests
- Tablet screen is context sensitive; when you're close to a puzzle item (computer terminals, control panels, etc) view becomes like a first person point and click puzzle
- When not in a context sensitive area, tablet screen displays inventory to let you analyze or combine your existing items

How about a Robocop/HeavyArmoredFutureCop on a segway game?

Imagine: You stand on the Balance Board with The Wii U Gamepad in your hand. You use the controller and both of it's dual analog sticks to control all the crazy weapons and cannons (preferably two huge ones and maybe some rocket launchers) on your futuristic, heavily armored segway.

With the tilt controls you stear left and right. With your balance forth and back. You can even jump when you fake a jumping motion.

Would such a game be rad? :D

EDIT: Oh, Oh, Oh!! Or what about a Ninja on a segway game? Same idea only with Nunchuck/Wiimote as DUAL KATANAS!! :DD

Nintendo should have presented better proofs of concept. I don't know how to use it in a new unique way, but I think the point is that Nintendo should have if they were going to base their console around that controller. They also have yet to produce a second game that really shows why the touch pad on the controller is necessary.

I'd make a game that uses the accelerometer where the game measures how far you can toss your gamepad and it would have world leaderboard rankings.

That is probably the most ridiculous idea for a game ever

I want it......

Sold me with "futuristic, heavily armored segway" :P

Like a first person horror game were it uses the camera and you are looking everywhere for something. In some moments you see a hand behind you trying to stab you and them you have to run for your life.

Meh, something like that?

Lol, great idea for a game... But you do realize that with any control setup, the gamepad is useless, since you're speeding and aiming at stuff on the big screen.

I actually had an idea for a long time and couldn't think of an effective way to make it playable until wii u came along.

Basically the protagonist was a thief trying to re-obtain heirlooms belonging to his disgraced family, and the guy had some sort of gourd at his belt allowing him to basically earthbend.
This was used to create fake walls to be stealthy, platforms, stairs to climb buildings, and of course fend off or eliminate enemies, which would have been a militia or something.

I don't like contextual actions so it would need a touch screen to earthbend easily and not a pain in the ass, while you could move and jump with traditional controls.

It was in some sort of spanish city like Toledo with the occasional bull races you could redirect via earthbending to cause diversions or to attack the militia during your stealings.
Some sort of Zorro era open world game with a focus on stealth, I guess.

I'm probably weird.

Lol, great idea for a game... But you do realize that with any control setup, the gamepad is useless, since you're speeding and aiming at stuff on the big screen.

No no, it's not useless. Both games are being played while you look at the TV, not the Wii U Gamepad Screen.

My idea (the first one with the Robo Cop) wouldn't work with a Wii U Pro controller, as it doesn't have motion sensors.

Both ideas only work with the Balance Board + Wii U Gamepad/ or + Nunchuck/Wiimote, because both motion sensors can be used as stearing-inputs for LEFT and RIGHT, while still providing extra funktionality: Wii U Gamepad=Dual Analog + lots of buttons or Nunchuck/Wiimote=1:1 Double Katana Sword Movement.... WAAAAAIIT - I've made a mistake: For the Ninja game you'd need TWO Wiimotes + Balance Board = then it would work!! :D

the unfortunate reality is that the Wii U gamepad is neither multi-touch

multi touch in tablet phone games is used to compensate for the lack of real buttons.

the wiiu tablet has real buttons.

OT: some blindingly obvious uses;

- Sniping in fpses to mimic real world sniping. the wiiu gamepad works like the silent scope arcade cabinets and sees the world at extreme zoom, you have 'overview' of the world on the main screen.

- multiplayer squad based fps where your wiiu gamepad is a tactical menu that you can draw routes, add waypoints and other info on. Like natural selection commander mode, call in directional airstrikes and what have you. you see 'yourself' from a topdown view while the tv displays first person view.

- aliens style motion tracking

- hud free games with the hud on the wiiu gamepad

Do you want people to have to "constantly" pause the game for item management? Do you want the TV "constantly" cluttered with HUD elements that you rarely need?

The Wii U GamePad is a controller, not a handheld. What a strange complaint that you can't take your controller outside. That's what 3DS and Vita are for.
I never said what you're claiming. In fact I started by saying things like inventory are great, but that the controller itself I don't really like and the fact that you're even looking away from it kind of takes away from the kind of game WE are making.

I understand it's a controller, but as a touch-screen it isn't even capable of pinch-zooming and unlike the phones and tablets being used for the same things on the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles, it also can't be taken with you. The Vita can also, apparently, continue your PS4 experience from outside the same location as the PS4 itself.

That would be all it takes to make the Wii U a justified purchase.
Or if Osu! got a Wii U port (and somehow allowed you to load beatmaps and mp3s using the SD card...).
