Dragon's Crown Thread of Import Impressions and Elf

Played for 14 hours straight. It's pretty good.

A few things I don't like about the game, like your character getting lost in clusterfuck battles, right stick cursor control, lack of cross play between PS3 & Vita and not enough dungeons/locations.

Enjoyable for the most part.

Yeah this is worrisome. I honestly think I'll just give this a rent when it comes out.

Question for those that are playing it. You have the shortcuts on the d-pad assigned to different buttons, yet I can't seem to find how to put an item for the shortcut of triangle, I see no triangle symbol in the inventory equipment menu. Any ideas?

*edit* Nevermind must have been a glitch, now the triangle button is showing up.

Picked this up while visiting DenDen Town along with some second hand stuff.

Wont get back to my ps3 before monday :(

Nicely done! I'm very pleased, in particular, with one of your purchases.

I think you can guess which one. >:)

I'm still debating playing it or keeping it sealed. I have finished both FFVI and CT several times on other platforms. I just wanted complete copies of the originals for sentimental reasons :)

So I assume the character names are one-time register and multiple people can use the same names? I'm assuming it is, since it's not an MMO, but I figured I'd ask just in-case. I'm wondering if I should hurry to create my character's the day of release just so nobody steals my choice(s)!

How does this compare to Harmony of Despair? I had a lot of fun with that. I did not like Murumasa very much because of all the backtracking and repetitive battles, so I'm not sure about this game. Online coop is a pretty big deal to me, though. I hope it's hard.

Does anyone know what the stats govern? We already know that Luck affects your critical hit rate and critical defense rate. What does Dexterity do in the context of this game?

Understandable, my friend. What you have there are two of the greatest RPG's to ever grace this Earth. They're easily within the top five RPG's for me [Chrono Trigger is actually #1 for me personally, with Final Fantasy VI/III being #2]. You have incredible taste and both are definitely warranted for owning physical/complete copies!

Enjoy. :)

That is not an opinion. It is a fact.

Also how deep exactly do you need to go before you can play online with others?

If there are only 9 stages, how does the game go on for 30 hours? Do you have to just keep going back to the same stages and fighting to the end over and over? Any variation? How does it not get boring?

From a poster on gfaqs who has the game and can read Japanese (He has posted videos on youtube):

STR --- Affects strength of physical attacks.
INT --- Affects strength of magic attacks.
CON --- How much damage reduction you get off of physical attacks that hit you.
MGR --- How much damage reduction you get off of magic attacks that hit you.
DEX --- This affects how stable your weapon damage is (note: every weapon's attack stat is listed as XX to XX. For intance, an S class level 36 weapon might be 81 to 103, while an E class lv.36 one might be 3 to 103... this stat affects how consistent your damage ratings are, I suppose).
LUC --- Affects rates of critical hits.

You have to finish the A path of all 9 of the main stages before online co-op is enabled. Every stage has an A and B path each with different bosses. Apparently the 9th stage's A path is around character level 17. Once you've cleared that path, online co-op unlocks and all of the stages/bosses you've cleared before get scaled up to their level 17 versions as well. Couch co-op is unlocked from the start.

I'm interested in this too, I have no problem with the game having only 9 stages IF there's some ennemy variety. Ramp up the difficulty, give me different ennemy waves, bring in a few different bosses and it would be fine.

some bosses i guess you just gotta grind to level up yourself to beat it i guess?
also, each stage has 2 paths A & B
kirbysim definitely mentioned new enemies on different difficulty levels

Thanks for the info. Guess I will just be picking up alot of arrows from the dead bodies...

Cool about the bosses, now I'm wondering how different A & B paths are. But in the end, as I'm going to be playing this almost exclusively co-op I won't get bored much. I mean, I have finished Castle Crashers more times than I care to count and this game seems better than CC in every regards. So I'm keeping my US preorder up and patiently waiting.

Are you new to Vanillaware games? ;P

Odin Sphere has like 3 regular enemies 4 bosses 5 stages and takes about 60 hours to finish.

Anyone know about the Asian Version and whether it has English text or not? Did anyone bite on that?

It does not. To clarify the situation for Asian releases: The current release available in Asia now is the Japanese version. It is identical to the Japan release other than the lower price. There will also be an Asian release of the US version in August when it is out. If you're looking for English text, do not bother with the Asian release if you are in the US.

I was asking how it doesn't get boring. If it does get boring, then at least I'll know to expect the same shit from Vanillaware! :P

hahah so true. But yeah you're right, interested to hear about that as well.

For those who already played through the game..do you have to finish it with all the characters to get a good ending (or any ending like in OS)? Sorry if that has been asked and answered already. But I was really traumatized by Odin Sphere.

So, STR affects max damage and DEX affects min damage?

How does equipment play into damage reduction? The Fighter (the "tank") has lower CON than the Dwarf, so does that mean he takes more damage or does his shield and armor factor in somehow?

Thanks for clearing this up. I was wondering how deep in the story you'd have to be to unlock online. Is this about 50%?

Traumatized? Really?

Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown are fundamentally different in how characters are treated. Dragon's Crown is a game where you have the same story regardless of which character you play (think Diablo). Odin Sphere is a game with five "books" (+ boss rush book) where each book has a different character.

I don't really know how much armor and such makes up for the difference in CON between Fighter and Dwarf but the Fighter does have active skills that increase his defense, plus being able to guard with his shield naturally.

As far as equipment factoring into defense/damage taken, the same user who posted what the stats do gave this example of a level 36 Sorceress weapon:

S-rarity Lv36 Ice staff
ATK: 81 to 103
-11% damage received from enemies
+9% Ice damage
-12% spell attack power and mana consumption
+12% damage to Undead

I would assume other classes can get the "-X% damage received from enemies" added effect on their gear so you could stack damage reduction like that. I don't know if the Fighter's armor with no added effects would give him an edge on the Dwarf's higher CON, though.

Thanks for clearing this up. I was wondering how deep in the story you'd have to be to unlock online. Is this about 50%?

Sorry, no clue on this. My guess is yes, about 50%, just because max level for Normal mode is 35 and the 9th stage's Path A is level 17 according to that user. That user writes for this website: http://www.sgcafe.com, and I pulled the information about how far you need to get to unlock online directly from this page: http://sgcafe.com/2013/07/dragons-crown-ps3-vita-online-labyrinth-chaos-pvp-arena/:

Replay value in Dragon’s Crown

Today, we’ll start by taking a look at how deep the game is, in terms of replay value.

When you first get your copy of the game, you won’t be able to jump into online games right away – that has to be unlocked first. Specifically, you need to first unlock all nine stages of the game, and fight bosses ranging from Lv1 to Lv 17, in order to get to the part where online play is allowed.

Once you’ve played all nine dungeons for the first time, you’ll unlock online mode, as well as B paths for each of the nine stages. All the A path bosses (whom you’ve previously defeated) will also be upgraded to their Lv17 versions.

Ah, thanks. How many equipment slots are there, by the way?

Ah, thanks. How many equipment slots are there, by the way?

That, I have absolutely no idea about. I know the Fighter gets separate equip slots for the sword and shield and that both have their own stats. All other classes only have one slot for their weapons.

Dunno about defensive gear, though this page seems to say that there are 9 different types of accessories if I'm reading it right. Not sure if you can equip one of each type though.

Well, there are still things left to play for. Skill points to improve your abilities and you unlock the final dungeon on the hardest difficulty.

I don't think I'll be playing this for very long though unless they add new content.

How do I get to choose difficulty? o:
Do I need to finish first in Normal to get this option?

edit: got my answer in a wiki, it's indeed when Normal's cleared that we get Hard (and probably Hard->Inferno too)

I guess what I was asking wasn't why people would keep playing the game, but rather whether the game actually takes 30 hours to complete. If it's a 10 hour game with a lot of bonus and optional content, I think that's fine. I'm just hoping it's not a forceful grind like Odin Sphere where you need to keep playing the same shit over and over and over just to unlock actual new story content and finish the game.

I'm loving this game so far and loving everything other than the narrator. I really wish Asami Imai's voice was unlocked as the narrator from the start without needing the DLC as I think her voice would make this a lot more enjoyable for me personally anyway.

I'm not seeing any actual players claiming 30 hours. The guy I've been pulling info from took 16-20 on his first normal playthrough.

Thanks, that's really what I was asking, and it would be nice if people who are playing it could give more insight into how the game is paced and structured. :)

Are the locations as repetitive as Muramasa's?

I asked the same thing about the 20 hour play throughs when I heard 9 stages but someone mentioned it was usually about 12 then as well. Maybe there's extra to unlock? :S

Tbh, I bet it's a lot of fun in MP especially.

EDF feels like 4 stages but I love it!

My final playtime was 16 hours. I'd say roughly 7 of those hours were spent grinding for loot/gold/exp by playing the same stages over and over, and the other 9 were spent actually progressing through the game.

Are the locations as repetitive as Muramasa's?

More repetitive. It usually takes me like half a minute to figure out what stage I've been dropped in when I jump online because they all look so similar.

Owch! That kind of sucks but I'm getting this for $30 so I'm not going to complain, kind of disappointing though.

That sounds pretty good. I'm certainly hoping it's more beat em up than "RPG" after Odin Sphere. I'll rather have a shorter game which I willingly replay or continue to play, rather than one which artificially drags on and on with the same content recycled just to pad a longer story out. :)

wait wait wait you can still buy new Snes and games in Japan my word

Damn, some of these impressions are kinda bumming me out.

I got bored of Muramasa pretty quickly.. And I was mad excited for this, but now I'm like 50/50.

The only thing I could see keeping me interested in playing thru the whole game is the loot.

i think once you've done everything, the game basically just becomes a loot game
kirbysim mentioned there's no trading in between players though lol

There was no trading in Castlevania Harmony of Despair either, and I'd say that game was fantastic. Chapters in that game were shorter than stages in Dragon's Crown, as well.
