Verge: Moto X to be revealed Aug 1

I have some doubts about choosing the white version.

Wasn't there a camera flash issue with white iPhones, or was it due to the glass back?

I wouldn't mind seeing off-contract prices go lower in the future, since upgrading through Verizon is a death wish for the unlimited data plan (although they'll probably phase that out entirely in the future).

The only reason I think $350 is too much is because the Nexus 4 is $350 for the 16GB version and has similar specs to the rumored Moto X specs. My hope is something in the $250 range. Hell, the new Nexus 7 is $229 for the 16GB version and it has pretty much the same specs as the Nexus 4. If Google could price the Nexus 7 at $229, they could go as low as $200 for the Moto X, assuming the rumored specs are accurate.

Performance should be similar, but now you get LTE and hopefully a pretty good camera with their "Clear Pixel" technology, whatever that is.

If I remember correctly, these buzz words are just a way to deal with a scenario where they can't defy the laws of physics... unless they want a bulging lens on the back of their phone.

not counting the infinite power of the DSP cloud, how would the main CPU compare to a HTC OneX (tegra 3)?

if its as cheap as $200 and they don't do the 1:1 $ to eurons conversion i'm in (but they will :()

You have to compare the phone to an LTE version of the Nexus 7, which is $349. Those radios are apparently pricey. Then there's trying to fit everything into the target form factor.

edit: Here's a rough estimate from the X-perts: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Gold...ld-be-299-device-costs-225-to-produce_id45934

$225 to manufacture the Moto X seems a bit much considering analyst peg the cost of the iPhone 5 at similar levels if not less. But who am I to argue with the experts at Goldman Sachs.

Either way, we are looking at an incredible affordable device that isn't entirely useless. If rumored specs are to be believed the device will run on specifications that were on high end flagship devices this time last year.

Rumor is that it's basically a dual core S600 branded as an S4 Pro, like the Nexus 7. So it should be the latest and greatest.

I'm torn. I'm currently stuck on Verizon (only, not really) and the HTC One is supposedly FINALLY coming out on the 15th.

However, I don't know if that's worth it or if the Moto X is better or ugh... so many choices.

There is no press conference, just small private press briefings. Those will not be streamed.

Why are you pooping on Moto's party?

That's actually reasonable:

Screen Resolution is similar - Motorola has higher resolution while iPhone has higher pixel density.

Processors are similar enough - but Apple uses their own design where Motorola customizes Qualcomm's soc. I would imagine Apple can spend less because it's their own part.

Motorola has 2gb of ram vs 1gb of ram for the iPhone.

Then you get to the radio/baseband and engineering cost, but that's hard to compare.

Plus China vs America costs

So I'm reading posts of people who think this could even cost $200? Why would it be sold for so low when it is apparently a pretty solid phone specs wise?

I don't think it will be sold for that, but you should read the Goldman article linked earlier in this thread (top of this page maybe?)

Plus, if caught the pcmag article I posted yesterday, they're experimenting with a new layout for the way everything works together.

Motorola CEO said they would push the envelope on pricing. So, it led to rampant speculation.

However, this thing is assembled in the US, so there's a premium with that. I suspect it will be $300 for the base model, which is a respectable price but hardly groundbreaking since the N4 already hit that mark.

I think that 200 dollars is a reach, but IF it was I think:

The production cost would be below 200, so it would still be profitable.

The the combination of 500mil in advertising, with availability everywhere would make it a very attractive phone for a lot of people, especially with the pricepoint of "199.99" - seeing a 1, as opposed to a 2 at the front would be a world of difference. If they can establish that this is a quality device AT that price point, it would fly off the shelves (I think)

But in my opinion, I see it at 250-300

3 reasons i can think of:

- increase android market share

- lower samsungs share of android

- increase moto phone mindshare

Well and the other one in that Goldman article was what Google pays for having their search as the default. With Apple it's 75%, with Samsung it's 10%, with Motorola it's 0%.

Would actually sell my HTC one and pocket the change to own this outright honestly.

Don't give a rats ass about specs if its optimized well enough

Scoble on the hype train?

Robert Scoble said:
Tonight will be a big night for Motorola/Android/Google.

I can't say more until tonight at about 9 p.m. but this is a game changer in the marketplace. I was the first in line for the original iPhone because I felt the same about it as I do about what's coming tonight.

But the first iPhone was controversial and so will what gets announced tonight. Even more so, I think.

Damn, can't wait to really talk about why but mark your calendars because this will be a launch we talk about for a LONG time!

It actually makes me feel sorry for Microsoft and Blackberry. I can't see a good reason why anyone would bet on those ecosystems after tonight.
