Grand Theft Auto Online: Official Gameplay Video, launches October 1st

Yes, they have already said they're going to continue expanding and supporting it after launch. There will be more locations, more missions, more activities, more content, etc. Everything. They'll be paying attention to what people do with the game, what they like, what they don't like, and shaping future content that way. It's an ongoing service.

Yeah, it is essentially an MMO that comes free with the already content packed campaign, but is limited to 16 players. That suits me just fine, though. I don't need a screen full of
people looking similar and getting in the way when I just want to take off and do shit by myself or hunt other players.

I haven't gotten into an online game in a while. I think GTAIV was the last game I spent a substantial amount of time with online. This looks amazing and I am super excited to play it.

Any idea what R* have lined up for next gen?

IF this is current gen then whatever they produce for next gen will be a cause for a public holiday methinks

Releasing GTAOnline in October is a bummer but it makes sense. Rockstar's reason is "to give time for people to adjust to the game and the new mechanics" could be true, but I also think it's:
  • Get an accurate sales count from Sept 17 to the end of the month to be prepared for server load, scale up if necessary
  • Tweak the online once the game gets released and if there are bad bugs in the SP, fix them for the MP
  • Avoid a "Sim City" like experience where people get the game on release and it's totally fucked up for a month, and causes reviews and everything else to plummet, and prevent them from getting on their feet again

That they're staggering content for GTA Online also helps. I was overwhelmed with GTAIV's which caused me to ultimately be underwhelmed... nobody had any idea of the mechanics when the game launched, and the online just wasn't fun for us starting out. We didn't know what to do with the structured modes and free roam was only fun for so long. By getting acclimated to the structured modes in SP, there will be a lot more familiarity with them in MP. Also, staggering the content creator is smart -- IMO -- because it will cut down on the crap that is released at launch by fans.

All I can think of though is a Trials Evo type of content creation by fans. Trials had so many insanely great pieces of content made by the community it extended the game ten fold. Im sure Rockstar will, but I hope that they have featured community made stuff so it's easy to discover. The "Lynx Picks" or whatever Trials Evo had was a great way to sort the wheat from the chaffe.

And then I'd like to sadistically kill everyone in the room with A) grenade, or B) molotov cocktail, or C) rocket launcher.

...this is why i don't have friends...

Many of these missions are simply ambient events you can trigger on the fly. Let's say you run into one player and decide to challenge them to a race. You pull open the map, drop a waypoint--user-created events and game modes are a big theme in GTA Online--and the two of you are on your way. But be careful, because you might just pass by a third player with a six-star wanted level fleeing from a swarm of cops. Nothing ruins a street race like colliding head-on into a police cruiser.

Those types of serendipitous encounters are one of the ways Rockstar is hoping to make the world feel more alive and unpredictable, while the potential for adversarial behavior between players is another. Maybe you and some buddies want to throw on a couple masks and hold up a convenience store for a quick bit of cash. Easy money, right? Well, the player who physically receives the money from the cashier gets to decide how it's split between the team. If your buddy stiffs you on your share of the profit, you can either chase him down and steal it for yourself or keep your hands clean by hiring a hitman to take him out--it's your call. The game even tracks who your rivals are and lets you know when they've come online so that you can exact a little vengeance.

I need this game.

I'm going to miss this game while I'm away at school, and then I'll only be taking my Xbox One w/me after it launches. =/

Summer 2014 will be dedicated to GTA V. I can't believe how much they are packing into this game.

only thing that sucks is the release date is too close to next gen release. Once I unplug my ps3 from my tv I don't intend to plug it back up. too bad the ps4 is not bc.

The multiplayer looks like a great deal of fun, but honestly, I'm probably going to end up playing the co-op modes with one, maybe two other people. It's rather difficult for me to gather a large group of friends to play games like this anymore.

Capture it please. Can just imagine a friend "what the fuck!!"

Holy shit, you can hire a hitman to take out a player who griefed you.

Does anyone think it's possible that this could actually be the next big multiplayer game instead of Destiny or Titanfall? Those games are still sorta in the same vein as the current big multiplayer shooters, while GTAV, assuming that it does live up to these descriptions, will be a pretty unique experience.

that looks so sick its ridiculous.

i wonder how they're going to monetize this, though. you probably can buy cosmetic stuff.

i wonder if they'll add the other cities in there too. i doubt it, it would probably not allow for a populated city anymore.

I wonder if that's going to be an NPC or another online player? It'd be so cool if you could become a hitman for hire online...

Yes, especially if it comes to PS4/XBO with 32+ player online.

This is just incredible. It's a shame nobody plays Kane & Lynch because that had a similar idea and it was easily the most interesting part of that game.

Is the hitman AI? I hope not. I hope it works like the wanted poster system in RDR. Someone who is just playing by themselves can take the job and earn some money.

The thought of custom designed Triathlons (or even septathlons) is getting me all hot under the waistline. I hope we can design state spanning races that utilise each vehicle type. I loved those in San Andreas and the infinite possibilities and combinations in GTA Online is just too much for my mind to handle.

That means PS is paying for the advertising, they even have a bundle. This says nothing of the quality. I would assume RAM would be key for an open world game and the 360 has more.

Either way, Sony wins with not charging for online. I only have a 360 now (sold my PS3 a while ago) and I doubt I'll re-up Live for this. I will just have to tough it out until the PS4 version drops then I'll play the online a lot. Or maybe buy a 3 month Live card ... don't know.

But I have seen nothing that it would tell me that the PS3 is the "superior" version. Is there a 3rd party game that actually "is" better on the PS3? 360 has run with this trophy for almost all of this generation regarding 3rd parties.

What? Are you serious? There are so many games that run better on PS3 that I don't know where to begin. Of course the majority do run better on the 360 but that isn't to say that there aren't any running better on PS3. A few examples by digital foundry:
Portal 2
Tomb Raider
Metro: Last Light
Bioshock Infinite
