Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Here's another one I thought of....

I like Steam in the sense they offer an excellent selection of games, have a user friendly interface and a community. However, I can never truly consider myself a fan of the idea you really can never possess most of the games (yes, I know some games are truly DRM free and can be backed up, launched offline and w/o the Steam client) in your library. I feel that the popularity and acceptance of Steam has at least 'inspired' companies like Microsoft to come up with half baked ideas like Always Online and game DRM. If it were not for the popularity of Valve's monstrous success, it is possible MS would have never thought up of such a scheme in the first place. The same goes for services like EA's Origin. Services like GOG are a shining knight in the darkness.

On another note, I actually hope The Elder Scrolls Online dethrones World of Warcraft and becomes the go-to MMO. Will it happen? Probably when Vegas freezes over but one can only hope.

I disagree, you can emulate the Wii and play the games at 1080p with SSAA :)
Very good point ;)
Well, I guess you can't use WiiWare or the VC this way, but that's hardly essential IMO.

Some more:
I like achievements. I have quite a backlog and when looking at what games to play next, I'm usually more likely to choose games which have Steam achievements. In fact, I recently stopped playing Arkham Asylum as soon as I realized its achievements were not unlocking.

Most Daedalic adventures (read: the Harvey and Deponia series) outshine a lot of the P&Cs that are considered classics. Especially The Secret of Monkey Island comes to mind. I have yet to see an intentionally "funny" game whose humour is as bad as Monkey Island's.

Both Deus Ex and System Shock 2 aged badly and I can hardly play them nowadays (played them back in the day, so I know how good they were). In contrast, many straight-forward shooters from that era are still enjoyable to me.

Origin's customer support is better than Steam's.

It took me 30mins to have an issue with CD keys sorted on Origin.

On the other hand, my shortest wait time on Steam has been 3 days, with the longest being 3 weeks.

Steam really need to get their shit together.

The people who praise Sony and bash Nintendo are the biggest hypocrites because Sony copies Nintendo so much that they are pretty much buying Nintendo products with different coats of paint and different name branding.

Microsoft is a better gaming hardware maker than Sony because they at least have some originality, which shocked me because Microsoft built its empire on knock offs.

Everything in the PS4 lineup is just more of the same stuff you got on the PS3 with a little bit more sheen.

Killzone was never a good game in any iteration. It is an always will we be the pale imitation of Halo for Sony hardware that it was originally promoted as on the PS2.

GDDR5 is worthless as system memory or anything other than graphics like it was built to be used for.

Microsoft and Nintendo are the only companies releasing console that offer more than just what you got last time with more polygons and lighting. This has been Sony's trend 3 gens running.

And what hardware would that be that's so original by MS? Cause last time I checked they're still copying left and right hardware wise. It's like you purposely forgot about the PS2 eye-toy to fuel your anti-sony bias. If you wanna give MS credit the most they've really done is software related; bringing a comptent online service to console gaming.

You can use WiiWare and VC games in Dolphin.

They don't all work that well though.

Not all, but a lot do.

I'm not going to pretend Dolphin is perfect, but it's pretty damned incredible what you can do with it.

I was playing Super Mario Galaxy at 1080p, 60fps, in 3D with a real Wii Remote connected to my computer through bluetooth just the other day. How insane is that?

And the games look incredible too. It's really something special.

Innovation exists not just in the creation of new ideas, but in the courage to fully implement them and make them shine. No one really gives a shit these days that MS tried to introduce tablets millenia ago, they care about the iPad though. The same way no one really gave a shit about Eyetoy because it wasn't really a product that had a lot of belief or backing. Only a few games supported it, (I beleive) And it was quickly dropped.
Either way, I'm kind of playing devil's advocate. I don't really beleive in the Kinect as a product that much.

I've played a few hours of Witcher 2 and the game is very bad to me. I still got a while left but it's really uninteresting, the fighting is boring, the alchemy isn't fun, there's too many confusing controls, and the camera makes it very hard to control. The camera is so close to his back that I can barely see anything, and the environments are so cramped I feel like I'm in a wall maze.

Not enjoying it so far, and I don't get the "one of the best games of this generation" hype about it. I'll try my hardest to finish it but I'm thoroughly not enjoying it at all.
I have this experience as well.

Some folks would use the same words to describe Dark Souls.
I have this experience with Dark Souls as well.

Final Fantasy IX was boring. Great art direction, and soundtrack, but very lackluster FF title overall. There I said it.

And Chrono Trigger enthusiasts have serious nostalgia glasses. Great for its time, meh today.

I get what your getting at with evolution of technology and all. I just get tired of this "idea" that all these game companies have some kind of faux originallity going for them. All of them have at one time or another have copied off of prior tech and/or the competition.

One of the laziest arguments in gaming forums is the whole "You only like ____ because of Nostalgia!" bs, not only that but it makes you obnoxious as fuck. Saddest part is that many probably wouldn't agree, so this is probably controversial.

and yes, that was directed at some people here

im with you on this. I played the opening scene and i was blown away. Then it became very very boring and i lost interest.

You should try actually quoting me instead of passive-aggressively insulting me next time. It makes you obnoxious as fuck....

See? I can make off-topic posts as well!

I would quote but I've seen the nostalgia argument soooo many times that I don't need to quote individual people. I'm just sick of it. I just find it irritating that people dismiss other's opinions based on "nostalgia".

And how is that off topic?

I thought this was a thread to post your controversial gaming opinion without getting directly flamed. I guess I was wrong.

I have nothing against your opinion of thinking CT is meh (hell, I barely played it) and it's fine to dislike whatever you want. I just don't really like how the word nostalgia gets thrown around like that, that's all.

I could've been nicer, so I apologize for being a bit too defensive, it doesn't make me a better person for insulting you like that.

You pretty much asked for it. The thread says "controversial opinions", not "controversial rants".

Well I pretty much said it's a lazy argument... so that counts as opinion. Doesn't ranting involve opinions anyways? I don't get what you're trying to get at there.

But yeah my post was kind of uncalled for. I was just irritated at the nostalgia usage so I once again apologize for that.

Well then I too apologize for being snippy. I was just unprepared for that comment. No hard feelings. Like I said, I think the game was great for it's time, but i personally think (complete speculation of course) that people are comparing "how they felt" after beating CT in 1995, with "how they feel" after clearing a more recent title like Persona 4, rather than comparing mechanics, visuals and what not. Of course, there's no real way to prove either way, but it's just my controversial opinion with zero foundation.

Killzone 2 is the far best FPS I've played on console.

I'm not saying this because it's a PS3 game, the whole thing was a raw battlefield, shit was going down all the time, the graphics were superb and the colour palette was a perfect match for a war game, dump, depressing and bleak. It was a war sim without trying to be a cool dude shooter. It was such a simple but brilliant WW II reenactment, it really made you hate the helgast and the palace siege was just brutal.

-At least one of the game consoles should be ENTIRELY designed, architecturally (CPU/GPU) for video games, even if it means using complex/exotic architectures, and it should be a premium console
-There's always a caveat with Nintendo's consoles. Even when they competed with hardware power, there were expensive and limiting cartridges, mini discs. etc. we have yet to see a Nintendo 3D console without a caveat, I think it's dumb to wish them to go third party yet until they make a console without a caveat and it still fails (if it does). And in any case...who's asking for Nintendo to go third party? The experienced gamer, what about the new gamers, will they beg for a third party Nintendo?
-The future is murky. New gamers are born and grow up, with no biases towards either of the three companies (or for that matter, tablet computers/smart devices). Who will be the gamers of the future and will they be gaming on consoles? Will they choose one brand and be loyal to it, sustaining that brand into the future? If they do game on consoles, will they select a diversity of software, or will their first game be a shooter and they stick to certain genres? If they don't game on consoles, will the people who currently game on consoles continue to be gamers through their lives and will there be enough of them to sustain a console business? Will there be a reversal in which smart device gamers have enough and want the console experience again? But what happens when the power of smart devices reaches PS4 levels? PS4 successor's levels? Would the fabled "tablet/console hybrid" be feasible at that point, rendering consoles obsolete? I've had lots of thoughts about the industry and where it will go, but there's so much uncertainty, I'm so glad to not be in charge of any company, I'd be at a standstill worrying about making wrong decisions.

As much as I consider Bioshock Infinite a fantastic game, Levine's narrative prowess was hampered by needing to add gratuitous violence to appeal to the masses. The classic "walk into the next room and face waves of enemies" design choice turned me off, and I found myself lowering the difficulty just so I could mow through the enemies and get back to the story.

Well I pretty much said it's a lazy argument... so that counts as opinion I think?
If I were you, I would just say "Nostalgia glasses is a lazy argument because..., thus making it invalid.", simply dismissing that argument without stating the reason is weird here.

Edit: I wasn't mad, no need to apologize.

1. Reward systems (achievements and trophies) are a necessity at this point.
2. PSN's Trophy system is far superior to Live's achievements.
3. Steam's new leveling system with unlockables for your account is far superior to both

We're cool now. :)

I've actually seen people getting into CT rather late and enjoying it about as much as people did back then. Some games can be timeless to others. For example, I never grew up with Mega Man and somehow Mega Man 2 became one of my favorite games of all time. Good stuff.

Nostalgia can have influence in some ways, but not in bad ways I don't think.

Oh, alright. I tend to let things get to me more than they should.

Black Ops 2 is probably the best FPS ever made, closely followed by Rainbow Six: Black Arrow.
Anti-aliasing is not worth putting in if it compromises frame rate.
Most recent game reviewers don't have a clue, and I could do a better job, probably with my eyes closed and no keyboard (probably not controversial).

I like Chrono Trigger... I was introduced to it on emulator as an adult and bought the rerelease on DS, I quite enjoyed it... It stands head and shoulders above most recent JRPGs, and it's laughably better than anything Square Enix has released lately...

"Sexist" videogames have almost zero affect on how young men develop their attitudes towards woman.

Sexism is a learned behavior coming from family dynamics, not traits of digital characters that nobody really notices.

The people who say otherwise are simply trying to make a living.

I think that FFXIII is a good game.
I think that Zelda games are some of the most overrarted games ever made.
I like all COD games that I have play. None of them have been really bad. Meh at best.
GTA IV is better then GTA:SA.
I liked the Games of thrones game.
I enjoy Empire Total war.

I hope to see Nintendo doing iOS games soon. Even if they have to go bankrupt to see that.

Most people might not like it but I can see them doing great as a third party in smartphones gaming.

Dragon Age 2 is a great game.
Demon's Souls is one of the best games ever.
Uncharted is overrated, i'm wondering why Sony didn't use the concept to make a film.
The 3DS has some truly great games, but the console itself is a piece of crap.
Mass Effect 3 final apart is a masterpiece.
Vanquish is a bad game.

David Cage is a very bad writer! And when his fanboys see criticism they seem to just put their fingers in their ears and cry "wahh! you just think it's not a real game, don't you?"

People who criticise FIFA and CoD being annualised but buy every iteration of Nintendo IP are hypocrites.

Sexiest video game have nothing to do with how men treat women in real life. Sexiest video games show how women are wrongful viewed/potrayed in a video game. Women aren't skinned males.

People who discuss sexism isn't trying to earn a paycheck but point out an issue that further gets dismissed everytime it is being talked about.

Sexism can be learned from a video game if the person exposed to it takes it the wrong way and apply it to the real world. Underestimating the human mind to believe that something digital can not change your view on things in life is about as ignorant as it gets. Sexism isn't like racism..

There's very little to differentiate Pokemon's release between each other. The game has only changed extremely slightly through the years, yet people lose their shit for Pokemon X/Y.

I'll go you one further and say that Pokemon is a shitty franchise that trades mostly on 20somethings and their misplaced nostalgia for a shitty cartoon. Adult Pokemon fans freak me the fuck out.

"HOW DARE PEOPLE ENJOY VIDEO GAMES I DON'T LIKE???????????????" or "I THINK YOUR FAVORITE OLD FRANCHISE IS SHIT, THEREFORE YOU ONLY LIKE IT BECAUSE NOSTALGIA"

Also the games were before the cartoons, genius.
