Jessica Chobot: Stepping Into Daylight by Polygon

I meet Jessica at this year's E3. She was a genuinely friendly person, and unlike many people in the industry, actually took the opportunity to talk. We also had a laugh about how she was represented in Mass Effect 3. All the best to her, I say!

Some people might need exposure to other mediums then, like books. Sorry to say that games don't hold a candle to other mediums when it comes to story with some very rare exceptions.

Well in terms of story telling of course books are better. Even movies can't touch books.

But in terms of interactive mediums, where you get a say in how things turn out, nothing can touch video games.

is Chobot her real surname?

gotta love all the talk about "her past" in the article, lol. They make it sound as if it's some important thing

If she doesn't want to be known as the psp licker, why not try using her real last name? If you want to be taken seriously, then stop telling people to call you chobot.

I can't take Bob Dylan seriously as a songwriter because he doesn't use his real last name.

Seriously, some of the comments in here. I hope you guys don't really limit your artistic consumption to people who have been schooled and professionally trained. You'd be missing out on a lot.

If something doesn't look good, don't get it. Why the venom?

They made her lick a Vita, I remember a video of a group pushing her to do it...she was like nah then licked it in a "oook if you really want it" way lol

"Sorry, amazing pitch/screenplay/novel/whatever, but you didn't study English at the right college."
GTFO
You people are ridiculous.

Well, actually...

Novels aside, if you submit an amazing pitch for a television show or film and you have no experience writing television or film scripts, the production companies will not hire you to write the script. They'll buy your idea and have their own writers do it, maybe in the case of a long-running series allowing you a couple of episodes once the show is established. Then, next time you submit an amazing pitch, they might let you write it.

Those are writing credentials when it comes to mass market entertainment.

Most of this seems to be "she did something I didn't like 7 years ago that had zero impact on my life whatsoever, therefore I will hate her for all eternity and damn anything associated with her." Stay classy, internet. Stay classy.

I don't doubt her passion for games and it's not impossible for someone with no experience doing a task to actually e good at doing a task. There was a time where Clint Eastwood had never directed a film and I'm sure people thought he should just stay in front of the camera and ride horses or shoot people with magnums while delivering punchlines. Turns out he's actually good behind the camera. This story has happened millions of times in millions of fields throughout human history. Other than the internet hating everything by default, I don't see why she should be immediately dismissed

There are loads of comics and actors who get to write scripts. Jon Hamm directs episodes of Mad Men, as does Brian Cranston for Breaking Bad.

These people exploited their positions to get opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have. Chobot's situation is no different.

Her dilemma is easy to fix: She already has to chance to be the writer for a game, she 'just' has to make sure that her writing blows peoples socks off - If Daylight becomes the next Walking Dead, nobody will give a shit whether or not she became famous for licking a PSP.

At the same time, asking people to trust you to do great things when licking a PSP was what you got famous for is maybe a little much.

Yeah, dudes who were really nothing for a majority of their life having to work multiple seasons before they were given the chances to direct on the show they star in is totally comparable.

I have nothing against her. It's not her fault IGN was just trying to get clicks, but it's not really fair to compare her situation to Cranston or Hamm

No one should give a shit about her past. The only people who should perhaps be offended are her peers, aka. the people who may have lost a job because this developer has decided to exploit her internet fame--which is unfortunately unavoidable--to draw attention to their game. That's all there is too it.

Hopefully the game is well received and all of this becomes moot.

Regardless, she should not be scrutinized for taking a job and doing her thing.

Do you think he tricked her?

I think he got her on her depress days after her divorce, you can tell she is an emotional wreck. Blair in that one part of the vid looks and sounds like a man baby, Chobot clearly wears the pants in that realm.

and the industry is constantly badgering about sexism, they have no right since this woman was able to do this and get to where she is.

Yep. Her entire career is defined by the portable console she licked. No possibility that the PSP photo just got her noticed and the rest was a combination of hard work (she hosted how many IGN videos?), charisma and a genuine passion for gaming. No chance at all.

Is there anyone in here deriding Chobot that actually knows her? Well enough to guesstimate what her motivation was for each career decision she made?

The industry 'constantly badgering about sexism' - which is a relatively recent and justified turn of affairs in my opinion - has 'No Right' because of her PSP photo?! Like this single event is all the evidence the industry needs to prove girls are taking taking advantage of the changing tide?!

You know what, I'm out. This thread is depressing. First time for me.

She seems to have a genuine passion for this industry, so I never understood why people are so down on her. I wish her all the luck on this game and her future.

It's apparently important enough for people to hold over her head, which is the sad part.

The supportive posts are almost worse than the obvious sexist posts. Blatant misogynists are easy to ignore as ignorant. White Knighters and the like think they are righteous and helpful, while still taking part in the same culture.

The writer is clearly that type. But, the PR folks who helped shaped the content of the article are the most despicable.

Didn't one of her IGN coworkers lick her face when she just started out too and she was like 'I can't believe you just did that'.

Why do you think most of the supportive posts are from white knights?
