IGN's impressions of PS4 Remote Play with KNACK on Vita [beautifull image, no lag]

I'm interested in how people's reception to the PS4 remote play might affect the perception of the Wii U off-TV feature. Right now it's completely ignored.

Its ignored because Nintendo is not forcing off-TV gameplay on all games. The fact that Sony is forcing it is really impressive, and their solution works outside of house [with access to good net infrastructure]. Sure not everyone has Vita, but Sony is showcasing great faith in "unifying their hardware" like no other gaming manufacturer today.

Found this today...

I got a chance to try out the Remote Play feature, that lets you play your PS4 games on the Vita's screen. In this demo involving the upcoming title Knack, the Vita is connected via a cable because the abundance of wireless networks at the showfloor would affect the demo. However, a spokesperson told me it would work over Wi-Fi at launch, though the performance may vary depending on the quality of your connection.

Was this overlooked by all the other press? Or did this guy (and maybe a clueless Sony rep) mistake a charging cable for a connector?

its clearly not tv lag. The gameplay shows up first on the tv. 1:27/2:53

Can someone with some better tech knowledge explain to me why people think this will work worse on a closed home network, then it does at a convention center like E3, gamescom, or TGS. My assumption would have been that if it were going to struggle it, it would be during these presentations as everyone is sharing the network at once. Wouldent it potentially perform even better in a closed network in a persons home?

Largely due to nintendos system requiring line of site with the base unit. Ps remote play is via WiFi

They both use Wi-Fi iirc, but Nintendo's solution is proprietary.

But you have to stay in line of site with the base unit.... ie.. cant use it in another room from where the base unit is. So pretty much useless.. well......way less usefull the vita remoteplay

Can't wait, though I hope my launch Vita doesn't have any hardware network issues. It downloads crazy slow from the PSN store, despite all my other devices (including my PS3) being just fine.

Vita is now a must buy, and PS4 is officially $100 more than Xbone.

Seriously, megaton for Sony. Well played. And Vita TV is even better for my purposes.

it will not work worse... as you say, it will work better because in these show environments they wont have one router per vita.

In general, it will work fine, it requires 4Mbs (At least internet gaikai does)... so if you have decent home wifi setup, it will work good.

If that's how it'll really work on my mediocre internet then I will be very satisfied that I kept my Vita. I'm just very reluctant to believe it will work like that.

Don't expos/cons have highly congested WiFi? If it's this smooth with hundreds of people on the WiFi network, I'm sure it'll work great with in-home WiFi.

they're probably using direct wifi connection to the ps4, not via wireless router. in this setup, the closer you are to the ps4 the better

I didnt realise the vita had a tv out, is this confirmation of a new cable or is itonly the New vita that does it
You are looking at a PS4 plugged into a tv and streaming to Vita via wi-fi. There is no tv-out on the new Vita.

There is however, a Vita TV, which is a non handheld Vita just for your tv.

Okay, seriously. Where's that Remote Play OT ? Remote Play needs to be sung to the goddram heavens.

All this talk about input lag and display lag and twitch gameplay and jaggies made me spend 4 hours going through my TV and tuning stuff. I can only imagine that it plays better now. On the other hand, I played ICO with my Vita and it has near instantaneous reaction timing. It might be faster than my PS3 + TV. I'm excited and I can't wait for this to get into someones hands that has some insane camera.

why is people talking about routers and decent home LAN? I thought Vita remote play was wifi direct?

Vita have many remote play setup, there's wifi direct, through local network with wifi router, and through internet.

wifi direct will be the most ideal for WiiU setup, your vita is close to the ps4, the further you go, the connection become worse.

through local wifi network will be ideal for playing in different room scenario, don't know how good this one will be, but it should work pretty well as long as your wifi signal is strong

This is one of those features that has me very interested in picking up a Vita in the next few months. The games are there now (at least for me), and this is just the icing on the cake. Love the potential.

Wha? GAF, is this true?

That makes no sense. There is nothing that is line of sight on PS4 OR Vita (like IR).

Edit: Oh, talking about Wii U. Still not true. It uses WiFi Direct (or possibly a customized protocol based on WiFi Direct). The range for that is poor, though, so although you DON'T have to be within sight of the Wii U, it doesn't work from very far away.

I think he was referring to the Wii U gamepad.

Apparently it some very fast Sony TV, currently they go to as low as 14-16ms of display lag. This one says:

lFM2DlH.jpg

"低遅延 0.1フレーム" = "low lag 0.1 frame"

How is 14-16ms good? My monitor is 2ms :s

Loads of places in Aus are selling the Vita and a game like Killzone Mercenary for $260ish, which is pretty damn good considering the way we usually get ripped off. Cheaper than a 3DS XL and a game.

I played this (that's actually me playing it in the RSG video above, and the video in the post just above this), and there was a router just to the right of the chair for this game (and this game only, as it was the only Remote Play setup in the area). I'm pretty sure that they weren't somehow using a wire for direct connection with the PS4 (which I'm not sure would be possible even on dev kits).

Even if it were a direct wire connection though I'd just have to hope many take a more GamePad-like approach to using the Vita: not JUST remote play, but using the Vita as a controller-with-a-screen. It's what'd make Watch Dogs on PS4 definitive for me, especially if input lag's that low even out of a semi-controlled setting like that.

Graphics look as crisp as the the gameplay looks limited. Going from a Wonderful 101 session to this trailer is making me realize how talented Kamiya is.

Quotes like this are making me want to stop reading and posting on NeoGAF.

There was another nugget earlier:

I've been watching waiting for some moment to impress but nothing yet. The enviornment looks so bland and static, this is not what you want to see when you are showing off the PS4 for the first time. The gameplay, after playing stuff like Wonderful 101 this thing is like action for babies.

What happens when the PS4 is online already with wifi, lets say, playing Deep Down.

Can it still connect directly to Vita? No additional lag? I have no idea what sort of bandwidth the wifi standards have and how much streaming and online play takes.
