Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Recent comments by Killzone dev just serve my theory that the next generation will be a barren wasteland devoid of any diversity, innovation, or interesting new ideas. Even moreso than this one. Quantity over quality and money over matter will continue until only Rockstar, Activision and EA remain and gaming becomes homogeneous before it collapses in on itself completely.

I'm curious about the Vanessa skin point. I don't know anything about that, though I don't follow VF too closely.

I refuse to play games on my PS3 because of the controller. I find the convex sticks to be almost impossible to use with any accuracy. Also, the two controllers I have went to shit far quicker than any 360 controllers I've ever used -- the sticks have shifted completely off center (similar to what would happen with N64 controllers). It's too bad, too, because I really wanted to check out Beyond and The Last of Us, not to mention finish Uncharted 3.

MOBA games are fucking boring and when I hear somebody complain that more people should play it they seem to forget that the community is one of the douchiest around.

Agreed. Doesn't help that the learning curve is insane.

heh, all of mines probably revolve around the previous Xbox One stuff.

I think it's a bit hypocritical to be against Xbox One's previous DRM plans from a "moral", "they're violating our consumer rights!" perspective, yet be perfectly fine with Steam or iOS game DRM because "games there are less than $5".

- Snip -
I didn't care for Xbox One's DRM and I don't care for Steam's either. The reason (not mine) people seem to defend Steam and the like is because of the reasons you stated plus people feel Steam's DRM is less intrusive and you can "play offline" even when you buy the game. The end result is you still don't possess the game itself regardless of the reasons people give to defend Steam.

Oh yeah, there's also people who say apparently Steam has said if they ever go down, all Steam games will become DRM free and you'll be able to use them without it. I seriously doubt the validity of that claim since I believe it's up to the publishers to allow something like that unless it's in the contract when place their stuff up on Steam.

I believe Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank has a overall better character design over Fox McCloud from Star Fox

and current Sonic games story and characters feel a little over the top childish and somewhat generic with their overall personalities and plot choices

Should I guess that Nintendo is the only exception to your theory?

Most don't care about Steam because it REALLY is as simple as Valve having a better company image and offering great sales throughout the year.

Microsoft just offered me an XBLA game I have never heard of for free. Why?

I really hate Buger Time. Maybe more than any other game I've played.

Way too hard. I mean, that salt shaker is worhless, the enemies are way faster than you, and in the end the game is very blah even in the perfect universe where it's major flaws were corrected.

I think Okami and Skyward Sword are incredibly mediocre. Boring, repetitive, turgid pacing, braindead, style over substance. Both 5/10s for me.

1.Obsession with "realistic" graphics and the belief that only graphics that don't look realistic are inferior is the worst thing to happen to gaming.

2. If game consoles do ever die, Sony will more than likely be the biggest cause of it with their lack of concern for cost feasibility. Just look at the losses incurred to the devs and Sony themselves at the start of the PS3's life.

3. The drop in quality of games and entertainment derived from games drops proportionately to the increase in specs of the hardware.

4. Give me an old 16 bit game any day of the week and it will probably be more fun than a next-gen shooter.

on the other hand, it seems like people will refuse to see the artistic qualities of games without heavily stylized, cartoonish or cel-shaded graphics.

really this extends to most aspects of games. bioshock infinite, spec ops and the like get talked up a bunch, disproportionately so because even moment's glance will reveal they fancy themselves as Important artgames about Big Issues and whatnot. nobody bothers to actually attempt to treat games as art unless the IGN preview specifies it's An Art, so the interesting narrative or atmospheric elements of tons of games get ignored in favor of ham-fisted crap.

Gaming is an artistic medium fundamentally connected to the fantasies of humans, fundamentally it's about the 'What if I could' wish. Which implies that the future of the medium is going to exist along the lines of human fantasy.

This means the current trends towards realism are fads and will give way in time to far more fantastic imagery and gameplay. Realism games will always exist, but the more fantastic fantasies will appeal more (saints row vs grand theft auto)

Simultaneously gaming will also be repeatedly vindicated from not being a significant cause of bad societal behavior. (Violence has already happened but will continue to happen, working on sexism, etc.) As that happens and sinks into mainstream conciousness, games will exist that indulge a great many aspects of deep human darkness in the safe environment of gaming. (All the -philias, extreme violence, sex, etc.) It won't be mainstream, but it'll exist for anyone who wants it.

and when that happens we'll be totally okay and society will continue to get better and safer not the other way around.

I dunno, it's a bit predictive but surely someone doesn't like that(?)

Xbox 360 is the most overrated console of all time. Both the PS3 and the Wii had much better games when it comes to exclusives. The 360 only got away with it because of its online service, and while it was slightly better than the PS3's, it should never have priority over actual games.

Come at me, bros.

Fully agreed.

I doubt this is too controversial on GAF, but AssCreed has always been bad and probably always will.

I would say the problem begins sooner than that with people wanting to treat things differently because "art".

1 more.

Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, CV, and RE-make are all better than RE4 (and beyond) and there was nothing wrong with the controls. In fact the controls were perfect for that kind of game and the crazy and moody camera angles they used. RE 4 ruined Resident Evil by begining the focus of the series into action versus spooky puzzle solving adventure.

bluurrbhhhur you know what I mean. i'm just saying people will only pretend to apply any sort of critical thinking to a game if rock paper shotgun devotes a week to it.

Well most multiplatform games looked better and performed better on the 360 and its generally accepted to have the better controller.

But yeah, in terms of exclusives the PS3 was better than the 360.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Assasin's Creed 1 was the best in the franchise.

It had the best ambientation and setting. The most densely populated cities. It also was the only game where you actually felt like a member of an organization/cult. Where you had to play stealthily. Where your robes were actually functional to the places you went and helped you blend in the crowds. Combat was tough, assassinations had to be carefully planned, and travelling was great, if a bit repetitive.

For all its round edges and repetitive design, I don't think any of the other games captures the concept of the franchise the way the first one did. Something got lost along the way. 2 and Brotherhood are more fun to play, but there's... something about the first one. I don't know. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

GTA V is severely overrated based on all of the professional reviews ive read so far. The narrative is lackluster, and Trevor ruins any sort of enjoyment I would of had from the story at all.

Every 3d MGS aside from 1 has both sucked and had story lines where any concept of narrative construction gets pissed out of the window.

Early vector graphics games from Star Wars arcade machine through to about Starglider 2 & Carrier Command were more aesthetically pleasing than the ray-traced 3D studio max things I see today.

Spec-Ops does not have heavily stylized, cartoonish, or cel-shaded graphics. [/anallyretentive]

This is a big annoyance with me as well. Realism is just as viable an art style as any stylized, cutesy, cel shaded, or any of them in between art styles for a game. Nintendo isn't the only company to have good art on sole account they make cutesy and colorful games. I think games like Killzone 2 or the original Crysis are just as artistically impressive.

I don't mind the Dragon's Crown overboobification.

Everybody else was whining about it while I was playing a fun game

I agree with this. DC pursued a very specific aesthetic and represented it beautifully. T&A wasn't the point. Everything was over the top and it worked.

So it was just pointless and gratuitous? Then I wonder how someone could not see the problem.

DC is an over-the-top fantasy brawler. Everything about it is gratuitous and that's just fine. The sexualized characters served the game's overall aesthetic, therefore they served a purpose. It's alright to dislike the game's artstyle, so long as you realize your tastes are subjective and that not everyone is going to find fault with the game.

This is my new favourite thread.

Final Fantasy games are overrated.
Dark Souls in my opinion, is average at best.
FPS games on consoles is a terrible idea, and I WILL look down on you if you enjoy it. It's unplayable and down right stupid. It began on PC, it should only ever be played on PC.

...

Most "realistic" games are still fulfillments of fantasies. Lots of people fantasize about being able to play on a sports team, or rob a bank and get away with it, or successfully outrun cops in a car chase. These are fantasies catered to by "realistic" games.

- I hate 90% of all console competitive multiplayer games.
- I think Nintendo is still the best gaming company around, and they've suffered recently because of a lack of marketing, poor messaging, and game development wanting to grow up too fast.
- I like MGS4. It wasn't the best, but I liked it.
- Bioshock Infinite was pretty great.
- The Last of Us is over-rated (but still pretty great)
- I want a realistic war simulation, where you get shot and get floored, instead of idiots jumping around everywhere.
- I disliked Heavy Rain and thought the writing was pretty awful.
- I don't like autosaving.
- I don't like DLC, even if it's free.
- I generally dislike graphical realism, unless the game decides to make everything realistic. There'a huge disconnect for me between looking real and behaving real, that eliminates all sense of immersion and connection.
- I love game story-telling but hate "story-games" where all you do is walk around and have a story told.

I agree 100%

lol. Wow.

I come in to this thread to laugh at bitter posts. Thanks for that before my workday is done.

The same could be said of all <s>religions</s> graphics

By all means enlighten me as to what problems Dragon's Crown (rated T for Teen) caused. Last I checked sexual appeals were permitted in artistic mediums. Much less commercial product, of which games are both.

completely no argument, I just suspect in our cyberpunk/star trek future people are going to drift to specific edges of entertainment. Particularly as increasingly large digital archives of content give people the ability to sort to their very specific tastes

You're just getting into semantics at this point. I'd personally use the word engaging. I believe all pieces of art should strive to be engaging, and whether that's by being super fun or incredibly gut wrenching. Games shouldn't have to adhere into being "fun" as their only means to engage the player.

Agree completely. Thank you. I will start using the word "engaging" as well.

I've said it before - in this thread and many others - but it bears repeating because it's absolutely true and there are people who think like we do and don't speak up because they think they are in a silent minority: You are correct.

1.
Killzone is a terrible Franchise that I cannot understand how people get excited over. I put it and Resistance in the same bucket of C+ shooters that get praise because there are not a lot of quality shooters on PS.

I swear there must be secret trailers for the new Killzone that are only available to those who swear to pre-order and evangelize it. All the trailers i see show incredibly dated and clunky game play. Yes the visuals are OK... but the game looks like bunk.

2.
The Video game industry is not sexist and most articles are just to generate clicks based on false info. Been working in the industry for close to a decade and never seen any sexism. Not in design, not in hiring, no where. Every 'horror story' i read sounds exactly like what you would expect from a contractor/TFT who didnt get hired even though they 'did overtime" (oh noes!!) Now they say its everyone's fault that they didnt get the job and now have to teach at Full Sail.

But hey those are just my opinions and on GAF i know they are loathed... oh well.

DC won me over because the dwarf was manly as shit.

Until harder difficulties when he became useless.
