PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Finally someone who knows the history. Shit is transparent as fuck.

FWIW, the same stuff just went down between the smartphones division and the camera division. The camera processing in th Z1 was essentially held back to protect the camera division. In the end the Xperia division won the battle and a new processing engine is being coded. Hopefully common sense will prevail here as well. Kaz seems to have a handle on things from what I have heard.

So I take it all of you are very optimistic that mp3 and media streaming support is coming?

Because while I have read his previous tweets and know how we interacts with the community "future consideration" is a common way of brushing concerns aside, used by everyone who wants to avoid a sticky issue.
I'd imagine it is quite a sticky issue. It seems like a 'corporate' decision based on promoting their own music service, at the cost of annoying a small portion of users. Financially it was attractive choice, but it's detrimental to the user.

Maybe they'll give it 6 months to tempt people to use that, then patch in MP3 playback and DLNA later based on the backlash. I've played around with PS3 Media Server, and I know there's a decent userbase for it who will be let down by this. I'd imagine many people also like shoving some music on a USB stick and playing it through their PS3 with minimal effort.

Did anyone actually use this feature on their PS3 / 360? I sure didn't. I've got way too many other music players to worry about putting music on my console.
I've never used it and don't even know what the fuck DNLA is but there's enough people whose opinions I respect pissed off in this thread to know that it's a big deal

Headsets are behind a licensed paywall now? Odd I could of sworn they stated it will be patched in later.

From reading the FAQ, it says that current Bluetooth headsets will not be compatible but USB Wireless Headsets (like my Pulse Elite) will be compatible post-patch, which is available at launch, so it might as well be "compatible at launch" since you're not doing anything without updating the FW anyway. Accessing your headsets are not behind a paywall.

Re: the MP3 thing, I guess that's kind of a bummer. I know a lot of people that like to play custom music while playing their games even though I never do. However I wonder how Sony will approach games on the PS4 for whom Season Passes/DLC/Pre-order bonuses include the game's OST e.g. TLoU OST. Perhaps they just release the music in a different format like FLAC?

ugh seriously? Okay not being able playing MP3's I can handle but if you can't even view movie files on thing.. yeah I think that's going to be a problem for me.

Well, a lot of videos use MP3 encoding for their audio, so the lack of MP3 decoding is going to many of them unplayable.

To each their own. I'm buying the PS4 to play videogames. If I want to watch netflix, hulu, prime, stream videos from my PC I'll just use the support that is already in my TV.

I find all this somewhat comical to be quite candid. Back when the consoles were shown at E3 the majority of individuals lambasted Microsoft for developing an entertainment device and applauded Sony for making a videogame console. Now people are foaming at the mouth because their videogame console is not a full fledged all in one entertainment device.

People didn't want added media functionality at the cost of gaming pleasure. That doesn't mean it's cool to strip a generation old standard feature for no reason other than forcing a paid service.

Playing music MP3 is simply basic fundamental functionality on any entertainment device.

Being a gaming machine does not exclude those features.

OK, I guess this is what I get for leaving my decoder ring at home.

I wish I could see what makes you guys optimistic.

Because there is no valid reason not to include it, other than an attempt to get consumers to buy SMU or some additional service. Do you honestly think that forcing consumers to purchase your content by shutting down standardized mp3/DLNA support would work? Sony is not that stupid. Additionally, they are not about to give Microsoft this windfall.

Yoshida better get those devs working hard so we will see some results soon.
I'm expecting a patch in 2014 that includes support for what's being discussed in this thread, along with other little things like wallpapers.

Their current push is to get their core functionality completely stable and fully functional during the launch time. After that, things like this will be implemented.

PS3 did not have DLNA support day one, it came six months post launch.

Ah, never noticed. I don't even remember how barebones the initial launch firmware was. I can only imagine how scary it might look.

I'm just more in shock. I always felt like Sony had things in lock since Feb, But i guess the OS might be a tad behind then i expected with so many basic features still missing.

Comparing this to MS DRM is extremely laughable though. Grasping at straws.

It doesn't need to be an entertainment device, just a multimedia device. MP3 decoding won't take away resources from gaming. 3 os's witha tv overlay may...we'll see. It's not about being full fledged, it's about basic functionality being left out to push a pay service.

Don't care about mp3s...but can it play video files off a usb stick? If not then...I'm jumping to the Xbone camp .

Because MP3 playback in a games console is more important to you than games?

I understand why people would be pissed off, but it personally doesn't bother me. As long as it plays blu-rays, it's cool. I have my PC for my tb or so of music.

I guess I have too many toys hooked up to and around my TV to really care about this, but it's just crazy that after 7 years we're going backwards instead of forwards in any aspect of these new boxes. The Music Unlimited caveat is a classic Trojan Horse move, nobody wants that over services like Spotify or Rdio. Add it to the pile for stuff to patch in, I suppose.

Well, a lot of videos use MP3 encoding for their audio, so the lack of MP3 decoding is going to many of them unplayable.

I seriously doubt that they went as far as not having an MP3 decoder, arguably for that specific reason. More than likely, as has been pointed out, they don't have a music player on the system to play the files, not that they are literally incapable of playing them.

1 year of music unlimited - 59,99$ (41,99$ for ps+ members)
Does anyone know where to find this subscription deal. I'm looking on the webstore and all I see is the option to have the premium play at $9.99 per month or the "Access" play at $4.99 per month.

I don't see any mention of annual subscriptions. I know they have done this in the past though.

If they are "not that stupid". Then why did they do this in the first place? Its obvious.. they DOOO want you to use SMU and not stream your own music you already paid for.

It cant, but as far as I know, even Xbox One dont support external storages
What the crap ball!? Is the no videos actually confirmed? Is the lack of external storage support in Xbone confirmed as well?

Might as well just stick with PS3 for the next year.

Yoshida actually has the funniest twitter responses, even if they're only a few characters long.

Just read his reactions to Totilo asking about VHS compatibility and some guy accusing him of being racist.

I just find it incredible they do this to themselves in 2013.

I think that there is no way gamers should accept the blocking of music files on either system so that we can get sold a streaming service.

I can't speak for anyone else, but after the way Sony has handled PR and DRM so far I am willing to give them a little time to try and sort this out. Also Shu is freaking awesome.

They *are* that stupid because that was exactly the plan all along. It is still, right now, the plan. Its in the FAQ and confirmed.

And reversing course on brute-forcing a planned revenue stream seems much easier said than done. And it hasn't even been said.

@yosp doesn't have to say anything and people love him. he clearly didn't fix the problem all he did was acknowledge the cries and people are rejoicing in his name

Come on guys they aren't keeping out MP3 support because they are focusing on games. Because if that was the case they wouldn't have their pay music service up and running for launch.

What do you expect him to do? People are happy because it's far better than the marketing talk that MS has been shooting out.
