Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

What about banding? I was really interested in Sony's W6 series, especially since I can get the 42 inch for less than $600, but I'm reading everywhere that it suffers from banding issues.

You mean color banding which is usually visible in gradients? I haven't noticed any, but I haven't looked at any test images either, just a few PS3 games and TV.

If it's there I certainly don't see it in normal use, and I'm usually very sensitive to this stuff.

Or maybe I won the panel lottery :D

Edit: just did a quick Google search, now I know what you mean. Well, I can see a tiny bit of banding when displaying a completely uniform dark grey image, but I really have to look hard to see it at all even under these extreme conditions. I really can't see it when there's anything going on on the screen. Not even when the screen is completely white/black. Non-issue for me.

I also don't think I've ever seen an edge-lit LCD TV without this.

It is only available in 32" in the US. Sony W650A

What are the significant differences between that TV ($648 on Amazon for 32") versus the R450A ($428 on Amazon for 40")

Both seem to be 1080p 60 Hz, but there has to be some big differences to warrant the $200 price difference and for a smaller TV.

Isn't the Sony W650A 120hz ? That's what it says on amazon.

I've returned my previous 42W651 to the store and brought another one. This one is better, even though I can still see a very minor vertical band, seems darker on the screen, but is extremely faint.. Can only see it on certain patterns or gradients, mainly in gtaV and far cry, on the sky, during dusk or something.

But i've tested the same games, same save files, on different tv sets and they all exhibit the same "flaw" in the exact same spot. Knowing that no two panels are exactly the same, especially considering that I've tested on 2 LCDs of different brands, I'm inclined to believe it's a flaw in the game, as weird as it sounds. 3 Tvs and they all shared the same flaw in the same spot? Too big of a coincidence. Keep in mind that I *might* be a bit paranoid and I'm a little over sentitive to these things. A friends of mine and my gf played on my w65 and couldn't see a single flaw in it.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the tv, I'll just have to get a little more used to it. Other than my Tv-OCD acting up, the image is great and the input lag is pratically non-existent, so I would definitely recomend it to anyone, at least to check out.

I had two 32" versions of the same TV and one after the other had absolutely awful vertical banding that pretty much ruined GTA V for me, like yourself, during the sunset / dusk periods. Also noticed it during Batman: Arkham Origins when it was in grey / white areas.
Wasnt prepared to try out a third so I sent them back for a refund and have now bought a Samsung.

Fantastic TV's but they seem to have awful vertical banding in many of the google searches I've done.

Got a few questions if anyone is able to answer them.
I've had a 42'' LCD tv for the last 7 years that I use as my computer screen and for all my gaming systems.

I notice a lot say Plasma is the best for gaming and have also read the likely hood of burn ins on them is almost nil now. So since I use my tv as my pc screen and its left on the desktop screen sometimes for a while will I have any issues? Or is LCD just fine?

Also I guess I am looking for one with as low of ms as possible and wondering for somewhere around the 50-55'' screen range under $1500 if anyone would have any recommendations.

Question for anyone with the W900 wall mounted...or that might just know.

I'm pretty sure I don't have the correct bolts for mounting the brackets to the back of the TV anymore...but I'm wondering if I can use the ones that came bolted to the back of the TV can be used, or if there's a specific size I should go buy. The manual is pretty useless and just states to use what came with your wall mount and I'm having trouble finding a good answer.

Not my picture, just showing the bolts I'm talking about.

EDIT: Looking closer it looks like these bolts shouldn't be used for mounting, but it's not really clear, and if there not them I'm not sure of their point---at least the top two bolts.

EDIT2: Found it (M6 x 8mm/12mm+bracket thickness)

Looks like I got lucky with my 50" model... playing GTA V right now, and I don't notice anything like that.

My old TV had 2 big dark stripes on the top half of the screen, so I know what you're talking about... it's very distracting. Extremely visible in games like Journey. There's really a lot of luck involved when buying TVs.

Aye, was gutted when it was on the 2nd replacement as the TV as a whole is fantastic for the price.

But I'm not prepared to continously ship them back to John Lewis and have new ones sent to find the perfect one, way to much hassle.

The Samsung I've got now is amazing so I'm happy :)

I bought another w802a on sale like an idiot and I got a dead pixel. It doesn't show up during green or blue images, but it turns black when it's on a red screen and shows up as green every other time.

Trying to fix it but no luck. God I'm gonna have to return my 3rd tv.

EDIT: There's also 4 flashing blocks of pixels in a row.

I recently got my 50" Sony W6 (KDL-50W656A to be exact) and I can say this is by far the best TV I have ever owned, and I owned quite a few.

- great black levels (same as the W9 series according to reviews)
- next to no backlight bleeding/DSE
- great contrast
- and very importantly, no perceptible input lag in game mode (14ms in Bodnar test)

There's a reason Sony uses this TV at PS4 demo stations :-)

Can highly recommend.

I can't find this tv in the states. Is it another model numer? I see a 32 inch model.

Some more ST60 input lag tests and I'm pretty happy. You can see in the examples below Vanquish (30fps game) is more responsive compared to something like Battlefield 3 (also a 30fps game).

So I'm guessing the input lag shown in Vanquish is more representative of input lag than the BF3 one, as the extra delay in BF3 is due to response time of the game itself? I don't know...but they're the same framerate running on the same TV settings. I might try using my PC monitor and doing the same test to compare.

virtua fighter 5 is a great test for lag since it plays very poorly if theres too much and it becomes very noticeable. theres a demo for it.

I had a look and couldn't find the demo on the US or Aus store.

just a question. Is a 4k tv worth it at all for the next generation (ps4) of gaming?

If the most we are going to get is 1080p, it wouldnt look any better on a 4k tv as it would on a full hd one, right?

Went into a store today and saw a 4k tv and was honestly blown away with how clear it looked, just as if whatever was in the tv was right in front of me.

I just bought the same one!

Great to hear it.

so is the s60 pretty much the best tv you can get under a $1000 for gaming(thinking about getting a 50")? It has an input lag of like 34.1ms and i'm not sure how noticeable that is in fighting games and such.

IMHO right now no.

It does look nice in the stores but there are a few problems with it I feel.
1. Content. not enough to warrant it right now.
2 unless it is a display with the new HDMI spec it's worthless.
3. Size vs distance. If you sit very close to the display then you will benefit from the resolution. If you sit farther away you need a bigger size to even notice the difference to make it worth it. I sit 8 1/2 feet away so the difference between 1080p and UHD would be lost unless I sat within about 6ft away. So I would either need to sit closer or the most ideal solution would be to get a bigger display which then falls into the cost issue.
4. PS4 does not output games in 4K (best we can hope for would be up scaling at some point.

Very close to pulling the trigger on the Sony w850a, but the lack of reviews and impressions is making me nervous... Also, no display lag test yet. Anyone own one of these yet?

Just bought a Sony 55W905.. Very good PQ with great colours and black levels. The input Lag is also one of the lowest.

Well, you'll never know in these types of game how much lag (intentional or not) is inherent in the game and how much is added by your display.

Ideal test is some twitchy 2d 60 fps game where you can jump, like Super Mario World on WiiU (you can also compare tv and gamepad, with the latter known as being 2 frames behind) or Megaman 9 on Ps3.

Has anyone got the SONYBRAVIA KDL42W653A in the UK?

It is priced at around £520 and I wondered if this was best in class for the price range?

Games with more post processing effects have more inherent lag.
Like Killzone 2 had a half second lag no matter your TV's input lag.
One of the best games to determine lag would probably be Call Of Duty 4 or MW2. I specifically remember the developers talking how they strongly emphasized on reducing lag as much as they possible could for the game.

So I'm looking to get a 60 inch plasma for gaming, sports, movies.

I won a Panny plasma at 42 inches and a Samsung plasma at 50 and love them both.

Looking for best bang for buck. Don't need 3D, smart, etc as it will be hooked up to tivo and Ps4.

Any recommendations? My first thought is a Panasonic S60. I'm also seeing LGs crazy cheap around 600-700 for 60 inch 1080p no frills.

Thoughts?

I am posting this again, as I did not get any answer to my maybe meaningless questions..
So, if anyone can spare a tip or two, I would be more than grateful to him.

"So, I am in a kind of dilemma or maybe trilemma..:P

I have these two TVs

1)Panasonic Plasma TH-37PV45EH, up to 720p or 1080i, as seen with my WiiU
2)Samsung LED UE40B700.

I will be moving in a few days and I would like your advice on which one to take with me.

For this year my sole home consoles will be the WiiU and the 360, and to be honest the absence of 1080p in my Panasonic Plasma(this is the one I ve been using so far..) makes me wonder.
On the other hand I have heard that LED are not so good for gaming and the few times I have experienced this TV, i had to put the "Gamer mode" On, in order to reduce the Lag.

Maybe I should buy a new one??:P "

Hello fellow gaffers, an italian gaffer needs your help: I just bought a Panasonic 42ft60, basically an european only 42dt60 with less optionals.

I'm gonna use it with my three consoles (360, PS3 and Wii U) and the two next-gen machines later this month. All of those are/will be connected in HDMI.

Can someone help me to adjust the settings at the best of the tv's possibilities?

Get the S60, and get it quick because Panasonic is ceasing production of plasma displays and they will become scarce soon enough. Don't expect fire sales or discounts, TV is already insane value for the price. Go buy it.

I received my w900a Friday and I'm loving it. I can't believe how much better BF4 looks on it compared to my old LG 55lh40. I have always been a bit of a sceptic when it comes to input lag, but the 50 ms difference between the 2 tvs is pretty clear.

One question for other w900a owners. People in my house think its hilarious to push Youtube videos to my tv screen from across the house. Is there a way to disable miracast and NFC on the tv?

I purchased a Sony KDL-47w802a on friday, first set was defective (two pixels) and the replacement is perfect. Very happy with it, watched The Dark Knight and Prometheus in 3D last night. Excellent picture. The motionflow makes the set way too dark though. I almost have to crank my brightness to max in order to have the intensity I want. So I keep that off.

Does anyone have an ambient light behind there tv? I'm looking at this one on amazon and I like it because it plugs into the usb on the tv, so it will turn on and off with the tv.

Any recommendations?
