Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

Putting aside the absurd amount of people who for some reason take stock only in negative previews(all others are paid off shrills) and have to convince interested people how wrong they are, the whole idea that this is the exact same game as the original kinect title doesn't seem to have much to back it up. It was a first person game that was supposed to mix limited kinect usage with controller imputs. That game seems to have been entirely scrapped and I see nothing that suggests otherwise. The combat system isn't the most involved in the world but the game was obviously intended to be more in line with brawler games than Devil May Cry. People being able to button mash through sections probably has to do with them choosing the easy difficulty. There are several previews that mention the game as actually being quite difficult so I don't think those should be ignored.

I'll try out the game once it launches.

Hopefully one of my friends wants an Xbox One because I'm not getting one until 2015.

I've often wondered what about this game people find enticing.

There seems to be nothing outside of slaying hordes of enemies basic enemies with the equally basic combos (I assume with the X button) and kicking over ladders here and there. The combat itself seems to derive from the Assassin's Creed and Batman games which are fine in the context of the two as it's not all you do. Seemingly this is all Ryse has to offer.

But then again I enjoy some form of depth in my action game which is why I enjoy the likes of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. Hell, I'd rather play Bujinagai.

Exactly what I expected. Looked like a tech demo. I always thought this game started out as a "Kinect One" game or some such.

Let's make this thread complete with all his impressions in short form:

With the exception of KI it lines up with my thoughts on what I've seen. The second I heard that killing combos in Ryse would go through regardless of whether you did the QTE's right I knew this game would rightfully get delegated to the mediocrity bin. It's like babby's first action game, there's essentially no penalty for failure, no risk, no stakes, just Michael Bay-esque pomp and setpiece fluff.

Crimson dragon looked better visually than a lot of outlets gave it credit for, IMO (especially for a downloadable that was originally on 360), but the gameplay looked rather slow and the camera an absolute chore to battle with in the open segments. Heir apparent to SF64/PD it is not, but I'd like to see that team take another crack at it with a more responsive engine.

Project Spark is firmly in the Peter Molyneux "too ambitious for its own good" territory. While I suppose LBP1/2 proved that community driven content creation can survive and even thrive on consoles, and in theory combining that with MS's superior online infrastructure it would work out greatly, I've yet to see anything really "wow" worthy to come out of the previews. LBP nailed the marketing both in actual unique platforming mechanics as well as an incredibly novel and alluring aesthetic. Just about everything I've seen out of Spark has just been generic miniatures of greater games and with stock fantasy assets. Plus, it's going to be if it hasn't already been lost in the marketing for CoD, BF, and the rest of the 1.5 tier launch titles and last gen Fall titles, and they've gimped support on PC by making it Win8 only, I suppose in some ill-conceived attempt to push OS sales? (as if a new IP that's multiplatform with no PC-exclusive features would be able to do such a thing anyway). This one's being sent out to die, which is a real same because I'd love for what's basically my dream version of LittleBigPlanet 3 to take off, it's just been so poorly executed.

Like I said in the other thread, I don't need it to reinvent the wheel. I just want a fun hack n' slash game that is set in a beautifully realized ancient Rome. I think it will more than fit the bill with those sort of expectations. Besides, I eat stuff like that up.

Like I said in the other thread, I don't need Gigli to reinvent the wheel. I just want a fun Romantic Comedy that is set in a beautifully realized Los Angeles. I think it will more than fit the bill with those sort of expectations. Besides, I eat stuff like that up.

You're talking like we haven't already seen the game being played. The difficulty doesn't matter when the base gameplay is so terrible.

Wii Sports Resort sword fighting was more involved than this.

Such hyperbole! Suppose it doesn't really matter, it'll be out soon and we'll see the whole picture. Until then people will continue to many silly statements and insult others it seems.

I'm happy for you... truly.

in italy every preview of this title are entusistic.....
As launch title i didn't expected games like the last of us or gtaV, but only good game.
I tried forza 5 and Ryse, but they didn't seem bad

Visually, the title stronger than Xbox One
Fights fluids and spectacular
Immersive and cinematic campaign mode

this is what a preview say.....Now I do not know what to do, I booked this Ryse with forza 5 and dead rising 3 but now I do not know whether to take it.

It looked like it played like butt back at E3. Graphically very impressive but it doesn't look like it's breaking ground anywhere else. Not surprised.

That metaphor works so well. And I think this is why Ryse will do well. It looks as if it plays like ass but is a feast for the eyes if you forget the animations.

I might actually go look for Gigli now though. I don't think I'd pay £45+ to play Ryse though. Each to their own.

Thats an understatement.
Even brawler games have far better combat systems. For instance, as much as I hate the combat in Batman, it has far more depth than Ryse:

These are the move you can do in combat Strike, Counter, Evade, Ultra Stun, Beat Down, Aerial Assault, Ground Takedown, Instant Takedown, Multi-Takedown, Disarm and Destroy, Bat Swarm, and Gadget.

Let's be honest, they're pretty enthusiastic about almost everything here in Italy.
There are exceptions of course, but they're usually very generous, especially with the so-called AAA games.

Exactly. Why settle for good when you can settle for anything?

WTF did everyone expect? It's Crytek. They offer amazing tech demos for the absurd price of $60. Technical wizards, moronic businessmen.

Ok, so I'm new to gaf so I might get the wrong idea here, but this really looks like you just so want the xbox to fail, that you dismiss, downplay or ignore any positive impressions of this game and bash it like it was kabuki warriors. There are at least as many positive reactions as there are negative ones, so instead of a thread named "this game sucks since one guy said so (ouch) " shouldn't this be called "ryse preview compilation (so far the impressions are mixed)" As it stands now this all sounds a tad bit fanboyish....

The interesting thing to me is that normally previews for AAA games are extremely positive and the negatives come out only during the reviews, which always causes buyer's remorse for preorderers. This is one of the very few times I've seen a big outlet like GI be extremely critical of a very high profile AAA game in a preview. That's thread worthy to me.

Better yet, settle for whatever appeals to you. I just like games like this.

Games that play themselves? Or games in Rome? Just go play Rome Total War 1 or even 2. Yeah you have to watch the actual combat unfold instead of playing it but you do with Ryse too. At least you can actually pull off some tactics in Total War.

Why were there comparisons with god of war again? GOW is no Bayonetta or DMC but at least it had a fully functions combat combat system and QTE finishers were not forced on nearly every enemy.
