FYI, the iPad mini with retina display is already on sale on various worldwide Apple Stores....since 1 hour :P
Weird...the street date announced was 21 November....I guess they misplaced the 1 and the 2.

Just saying :)

I really wonder if the new mini has the same guts of the Air (clock and ram).

I'll sit on this a bit then. I have about 2 weeks or so till I need to make a decision, but I feel like the Mini is probably a better choice as well. It's the sale that's tipping me over to the other side.

Go to the store and check em both out. I have an Air but I just ordered a Retina Mini and I'm gonna use em both and make a decision before my return window is up. So far, the Air has been an incredible upgrade in terms of comfort vs my old iPad 3.

Just got my iPhone 5s. It's incredibly fast. Everything runs smoothly! I'm super impressed.

Any great iPhone games around?

Help! Beat the game ages ago, iOS port is phenomenal but I can't help my gf here, can't remember what she's supposed to do (that lever inverts the clockwork but then how you climb the highest one if you do so??)

I think you have to
pull the lever, then pull it again so that the cogs are in that in-between stage of changing directions, giving you enough time to climb the first cog and get onto the ladder but leaving the next cog going the right way
.

I've only just gotten into iOS gaming after years on Android - can people recommend any iOS exclusives I might have missed that are worth catching up on? I've downloaded all the most popular new stuff (Terraria, PvZ2, Bit Trip 2 etc), just looking for some older gems.

There was a game called Incoboto that I really enjoyed, a puzzle platformer. The port of Aquaria was really good too, and Waking Mars (I like Metroidvania games it seems). Sword and Sworcery was great. Anything by Simogo (Beat Sneak Bandit, Year Walk and Device 6 especially). Everything by Jeff Minter's Llamasoft company if you like really old school score attack games...

tbh I find this question super hard to answer, I've just played too many games and I can't think of which ones were exclusive. Played all of KOTOR and Baldur's Gate on it, all of FFT and FFIV, XCOM, Walking Dead, Broken Sword, Monkey Island etc. I think I prefer it as a port device.

Good platformers - Rayman (either game), League of Evil, Swordigo, Bring me Sandwiches.

It does. That's their justification for raising the base price.

I'm still not sure it has the same clock...I guess we will know soon enough, but still could be impressive...with the only difference being the form factor....while the previous model was basically 1-2 gen behind (with lower graphic output tough).

Personally I LOVE my Air and felt a huge upgrade over the previous iPad (more because of the form factor than power...still untapped)....I'm really curious about the new mini.

Downclocking the CPU compared to the Air would be a middle finger to developers who already have enough different specs to accommodate. I doubt there's going to be a heat issue, and it doesn't seem like something worth what should be minor battery life gains.

Brilliant thanks. How is the Baldur's Gate port? That's worth playing just for nostalgia! Heard good things about Sword and Sworcery too.

Yeah but...you know...it's Apple.
Anything is possibile :)

It was my first time playing it and I loved it. IMO it's perfect for iPad. A good chin stroking, sit there on the sofa and have a think game.

I'm sure the Mini will have indentical insides. Even if it has the same clock as the iPhone that 100mhz has made almost no discernable difference. In fact, iPhone will often reach higher fps due to the smaller resolution.

On some level it does annoy me that the iPad has truly evolved into a "big iPhone".

It's even better if you (as I know you do) have a beard, even one as short and metro-sexual as mine. You can stroke it thoughtfully while you ponder your options for how best to utilise your +2 Axe of Greater Smiting.

I think having a beard makes my thought process at least 26% clearer. Even more on a particularly hirsute day.

FYI it isn't mentioned but latest Warhammer Quest update solved the iPad Air 'slowdown' bug....now the game is smooth as silk even on the new hardware.
Let's see if I manage to have my hardcore capped party being slaughtered again in last quest.....

So of the four games I mentioned yesterday, I think I need to give a special shoutout to a Ronin and Pixman. Ronin has a wonderful art style and is a satisfying mix of evasive running/jumping and combat, as you gracefully slide under arrows and strike down your enemies

And Commander Pixman now gets my vote as the best Super Meat Boy-esque game on IOS. The controls take some getting used to but they work well and are responsive, you have the awesome "see your attempts at once" style replays after beating a level, and the levels are just inventive and freaking hard.

Oh they patched it? Now I can give it a whirl again. I am really loving my iPad air compared to my iPad 3. SOOOOO much better.

I need a bag to carry it in though! It snowed today and I did not want to expose the iPad to the world!

So I've been playing a lot of Kingdom Rush Frontiers lately and love it (even bought some heroes). Is the first one still worth it or is Frontiers such a vast improvement that it makes the first one obsolete?

Yep. It still gets new expansions!

Ordered a white mini retina. Not sure if I need one, but hey, could always return it ;)

Cool, I'll get that one too then. I normally don't like tower defense so I'm amazed how addicting this game is. It's probably because of the heroes, I love to micromanage them.

Definitely worth it, the original is a bit harder imo!

In Frontiers I'm trying all the ironman challenges atm, some were easier than I thought, some seem impossible.
Gives me something to do while commuting every day! :)

I appreciate the input guys. I'm not going to settle for anything less than 128gb (rip wallet). I love a good rhythm game, and I've been wanting to scratch that Jubeat urge for so long. The only thing that's still somewhat upsetting is there still isn't really some sort of universal controller support, at least on the OS side. But I've invested a good amount in the app store already, and I love the support this platform gets.

I keep on flip flopping since it's such an investment (been flip flopping for years), but i'm going to cave eventually.

I ended up going 64gb this time around (after owning a 16gb iPad 2 and a 32gb iPad 3rd gen). It took a lot longer for me to cap out that 32gb than it did for me to fill up the 16gb, so if the trend holds 64gb should be plenty until it's time to move on to the next one. I should note, I have nearly every songpack available for jukebeat and a few more songs in jubeat plus and both combined come out to about 1.4gb of storage.

I think it also goes without saying, you need your iPad as big as you can get to play jubeat. Smaller devices are a no-go.

Stealth Inc (of PC and PSN fame) is hitting this week, I hear it has one IAP for the 1800 user created leves and comes with the 80 vanilla.

Hope the controls translate well.

Speaking of which, it looks like Terraria got controller support in the MP update, since it now shows up under options...

Yes they patched it yesterday (a delta patch too).
It isn't mentioned in the description, but now it is smooth as silk and I think they even made it a tad faster too (animations seems all faster to me).
We can now enjoy the game at full res too (iPad 3 was at 75%....but I guess you already noticed it).
I agree, the Air experience is soooo much better.
I need a 'bag' too...while I just walked in an Apple store on day one and was able to pick one up...there is an incredible shortage of covers and bags for the Air here....even the Apple ones.
I like my ipad naked as I never use it on a table or something...but I want a sleeve to put it in when around...and I can't find it (I find generic things...but I want a very slim one, made for the Air...no point in adding bulk when I enjoy so much the slim factor).

LOL nooooooooo! We've hoped that wasn't the case, she doesn't seem able to make it in time so that the the right cog is high enough to jump and grab the ladder from there. I tried doing it for her but I failed too :P

I'm surprised there aren't more people talking about Rayman Fiesta Run, it's fantastic. Maybe there's not a whole lot to talk about, it's a straight forward sequel to Jungle Run: more of the same, but better in every way aside from the framerate drops, which have only occurred on a small handful of levels. It seems like a much bigger game than the first, there's a ton of zones, and most of them contain multiple levels, which have harder versions that unlock when you beat them. I put in some time over the weekend but the large majority of the content shown on the world map is unplayed. Pretty crazy deal for three bucks, buy it.

I'm also hooked on Tiny Death Star. It's worked it's way under my skin in a way that Tiny Tower never did, but honestly that's strictly due to the use of the Star War license. It's like porn for a kid who grew up watching the Original Trilogy.

I played the game the other day on the PC and that's how I did it, although your screenshot does look a bit unfamiliar to me for some reason. I can't imagine that I missed this area though so that must be the bit I'm remembering. Maybe the iOS version is just framing it differently. Or they've changed the level?

I think it's pretty telling that Kingdom Rush Frontiers wasn't named "Kingdom Rush 2" because it's not exactly a sequel to Kingdom Rush. The first game has entirely different towers and heroes, which makes it play somewhat differently. Kingdom Rush also received an update a few weeks ago that added three new maps to it, so it's still being supported with new content.

So to answer your question, it's not obsolete at all, and it's very much worth getting if you're into Frontiers.

Yeah, I've already bought it and played a few levels. It's just like frontiers but with different towers and heroes, like you said. These 2 games should keep me busy for a while.

It has been confirmed the retina mini CPU clock is 100 MHz less than the Air one, equal to the 5S one.
Apparently everything else but the form factor is identical.
So the (IMHO) negligible difference makes the new mini a really impressive portable device.

wonder why its clocked lower. heat issue?

Picked up Kingdom Rush, didnt realise the majority of heroes were IAP's, sort of irritating from a completionist perspective. Are they required?

Is anyone else having the problem where the info bar from the Iphone's UI bleeds through into games? In Ittle Dew which I just paid 4.99 for, I can see the signal strenght, time and battery life IN GAME. This happened with a couple other games recently and googling returns no results on people having this problem. Is it a setting I can turn off or something? I emailed Ittle Dew's developers days ago and never got a response, making it even more agitating!

clock issue no biggie. i just hope apple can get their ios7 a7 shit sorted out soon. I'm hearing safari is still super crashy?

Ive had some crashes on my air and i'm not even a heavy tab user (3-5 usually), my diagnostic log is also full of low memory entries. Either theres some serious optimization to be done or they should have just went with 2GB of ram.

I just picked this up.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GFHJV2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I think it will be perfect for the iPad and random other crap. Did you buy an extra charger or anything? I ordered a cable, but it does not come with the USB plug. I am not sure where to get that.

Try restarting your device and see if that helps

I have iPhone 5 and I am yet to experience Safari crashing.

http://toucharcade.com/2013/11/12/its-official-oceanhorn-launching-this-week-for-8-99/

$8.99 for Oceanhorn - does that mean 7 euro? Sounds decent.

neat! Perfect to try with my new mini.

Think ill slap together an OT if no one has called it yet.

I see it in some games and video players as well. seems to have to do with orientation. rotate the device a few times seems to fix the issue... i think its just an ios7 bug.

Yes. If you like either KR or KRF; there should be no reason why you don't have both, like right now.

Currently workign on second full run of KRF (after redoing KR) and do feel that KR is a good bit harder then KRF (which only has a couple of really annoying enemies to deal with)

Picked up Kingdom Rush, didnt realise the majority of heroes were IAP's, sort of irritating from a completionist perspective. Are they required?

No they are not. Easy enough to finish both games without buying the additional heros. Can't comment on what it is like with them; because I haven't brought any.

FYI: Each of KR and KRF has three heroes that are not IAP. Knight, Elf, Orc (?) and Champion, Assassin, Beastmaster. The last two for each unlock after a few levels.

Just got a new iPad and picked up Ravenmark Mercenaries.

Am I missing something? Each contract gives me 10-30 silver, and my units have to rest for 19.5 hours after doing each contract. But to proceed with the story (white Major Contract), I have to have 7000 silver. Seems like it would take me days and days to even do the first story mission.

I've heard the series is great and I really like the gameplay I've played so far (Border Skirmishes are cool) but I hope I'm missing something here and the F2P hasn't gimped it.
