I see alot of people talking about the w900.

no love for the 850a? I am looking for atleast a 65". I really dont want a plasma.

because the 850a isn't available in America, is probably why it gets talked about less.

Absolutely loving my Sony w900a, colors pop, great blacks, just waiting to hit my 100 hours now and then I will get it calibrated.

the 850 actually is. Its on Sony website, Amazon and Best Buy/Magnolia

Why wait 100 hours to calibrate an lcd tv btw?

Good stuff, thanks!

All the reviews were really good. I wanted to get a Panasonic VT50 originally, but 50 inch is just a bit too big for my room.

There were a few murmurs about ghosting and problems with motion, so after I clicked the buy button I was starting to get a bit worried.

Hey all, apologies if this not the right topic, I searched and it seems like this is my best option.

I have a Panasonic TH-42PX600u Plasma TV that I need to sell, but I'm not sure what I should sell it for. The lowest used price on Amazon is 600 and there's one local pickup on Ebay for 200/400. Normally I'd just let it go for cheap since it's pretty old and I assume I can't get much for it, but from what I've read it's one of the better plasma TVs made and now I'm wondering if I should try to get a little more out of it.

Thoughts? Much appreciated.

Comparable sets (42" 720p plasmas) are selling new for around $400 these days and perform better. Kind of mind-blowing how cheap they've gotten.

I would think you're probably in the $200 range on a used sale. List for $250-$275 on craigslist and see what happens.

Do the plasma owners in here time their gameplay sessions on their already broken-in displays? I'm thinking ahead and wondering if I sit down with a new game that I intend to dedicate a day to playing if I'll have to tell myself after X amount of hours I should probably switch it up. That's literally my only concern holding me back from the VT60 purchase as I read a few upset people post about image retention on the avsforum.com thread for VT60 owners, which now has me a little gun-shy.

I'm sure there are plenty of plasma owners in here who bought their displays specifically for gaming (my main motivation) so I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this.
I don't have a set amount before I switch up content, but I do keep it always in the back of my mind. Also, it's highly dependent upon the game I am playing. Something like Uncharted, where the HUD fades away, will get a much longer consistent play-time than, say, Assassin's Creed or GTA with their static HUDs.

Having said that, I've owned my Kuro Elite for four years now and have never had an issue with IR or burn-in, and video games account for the vast majority of what's causing the phosphors to fire.

Thank you. I think my constant sense of worrying about IR is what is going to be what ultimately keeps me from ordering the VT60, which I was ready to do yesterday. Now I'm leaning back towards either the W900A (seems to be best in class for LED displays) or the W850A which isn't quite as good but I think I'd like to have the stupid big screen. All of that is tempered by the price and the fact CES is a month away... I don't want to see OLED surprise people with much cheaper sets in a few months making the pricey $2000+ purchase burn a little.

Bought myself the Sony KDL 42W800A for $785AUD (~$715USD). It cost the shop ~$50 to sell it to me as they have this thing that they'll always give the lowest price no matter what and I got another shop in a price battle, and they ended up losing money on it.

First impressions: Great design and nice colours, feels like I got good value for money. Worked out pretty well!

For an ISF calibration on an LCD/LED tv you have to wait a minimum of 100 hours for the set to fully mature. It's a little different than a Plasma, as you don't need to run slides, just normal TV viewing for 100 hours.

Plasma has slides, and then you should do normal TV viewing, then calibrate.

Yeah the 850 is available but only in 65"... Sony's problem is they have great sets but only in a one size for each model...

Just cause you asked for a setup pic.

oh does that look lovely.... one more month before I make the move.

also is that a real wheel stand or is that some type of exercise equipment mod?

So is there really a difference between the 850a and the 900a in picture quality? While looking at the Sony site the only differences I can find are different motionflow, and the 900a has a deep black panel.

So the motionflow I don't care about, but will the 900a have significantly better blacks.

Man, I played every AC and GTA game for hours and hours on my old Panny plasma and zero burn-in. Don't worry about it.

From everything ive read it seems the 850 is pretty gimped in comparison to the 900. Worse blacks, 120hz, really shitty viewing angles...

Someone earlier mentioned it was gimped in order to not cannibalize 4k sales, as a 65" 900 most likely would have...most likely true id wager.

The VT50 had retention problems, I got the new GTW60.
Gorgeous ,no ghosting absolutely no retention ,incredible bright.
The best plasma for gaming.
Peace

lovely. really looking forward to more setup pics as people get their TVs in. can't wait to show off mine.

Got my 60" ST50 earlier in the year - here's a great setup pic:

From left-to-right starting at the top:

60" Panasonic ST50,
PS4, imported white PS3 Slim, Xbox One,
Xbox 360 Kinect, Kinivo HDMI switch (behind), HTPC w/ Fractal Case, Xbox One Kinect,
Halo 4 360, controller cubby, Halo Reach 360

Z-Line entertainment center/mount

There's a Samsung HW-F550 sound bar hidden away in the small slot underneath the first row, it sits flush and can't be seen.

So how beneficial is clear motion rate on Samsung tvs? I understand the TV I am getting has a true refresh rate of 60hz, and thats fine. But the TV says that it has a clear motion rate of 120. What does that mean? Is it improving the clarity of each frame? Is each frame being lit by the backlight faster so there is less blurring? How impactful is this to the picture quality? Should I care about this stat at all?

Just got my Panasonic s60 & I'm confused by the division amongst the plasma community. Some swear u must break it in, others say u don't have to.... so in the meantime I'm about 36 hrs n running slides with an hr gaming here & an hr of Netflix there. Am I doin the right thing?

P.S. don't really see much of a TV difference but ac4 on plasma vs LCD I can already see a difference.
Love the sound compared to my LCD vizio

Picked up my new tele yesterday evening. It's quite amazing, I have to say. Have to come to grips with all the settings and calibrate it properly though.

I was looking to get a LG 50PN650T 50-inch as its only £490 in amazon.

Away to look at reviews but on the Reviews below someone said that the TV causes interference with their wifi... Surely this can't be right? Can this happen?

The passive 3D on my Sony 50W685 is fantastic, just tried the Trine 2 demo. My previous HX803 had active 3D (and was a few years old so one of the first with 3D). This has much less crosstalk (couldn't see any) and the glasses are so much more comfortable than the heavy and expensive active ones.

I think I'm much more likely to use 3D modes if games support it. Might go back to my PS3 and try out 3D rift and apocalypse again

That's a great price but haven't seen any reviews. Currys have the Sony 50W656 for £699 at the moment (£50 off the sticker price). Couple of hundred quid more but it is a good gaming TV with very low lag

Very nice.

Bought a Samsung F8000 (46 inch).

Tell me I didn't fuck up, please.

I'm dunno man. I had one for a few months, and the autodimming any time there's a very dark image is very distracting. I also found the interface a little clunky and the camera to be substandard. The colours are over-saturated, but that can be fixed with correct callibration. Also, the response for gaming was adequate.

And it must be said that the frame and base are as sexy as they come. Damn fine looking addition to the living room.

But after 3 months of use, the dimming and some occasional slowdown on HD sport was too much for me, so I switched to a sony W90, and have no regrets. Better interface, more natural colours out the box, the blacks are better, with no notable dimming on transition, and as mentioned many times here, the response time for gaming is better than any other LCD/LED on the market.

hmm, I did notice a few odd things when watching the football last night, but I put it down to not having calibrated it yet and the motion smoothing being on.

I switched it off for gaming which was essential, going to try that for TV too.

The interface, well it's a bit slow, but to be honest I don't really give too much of a shit about it, since I don't plan on using it apart from calibrating and changing the odd setting every now and then afterwards.

Black levels looked very good to me so far, a lot better than my old plasma.

The PS3 remote is Bluetooth based, the S60 does not support that. An alternative is to use the TV remote to control the PS3 via HDMI Link, it works well.

To my knowledge it's got IR as well, I was able to control my Playstation™ 3D display with it, and I'm not sure that's bluetooth.

I may well have had a bum set though, so don't take my word for gospel. If you aren't using the interface often, and your black transitions look good, then stick with it dude. But if you are unhappy at all, after spending so much, I'd say try out the W9.

did you calibrate this tv yet? ive been messing around with the settings (ordered a calibration disc that arrives tomorrow) and ive noticed that compared to my samsung LED this tv gives me eye strain. the contrast is so high that i feel like i cant handle it.. i can turn it down but i love the way it looks at high contrast (have it set to 82 after copying CNETs calibration settings). have you had this issue at all?

If you get eye strain, it might be too bright for you. Try lowering it and see if that helps.

yea, i unfortunately will have to do that. I think its a combination of things. the tv is so dam vivid combined with the fact that the ps4 games are so sharp in 1080p that i end up focusing my eyes on objects a little to much as i admire the graphics. i noticed that when i play competitively on games like BF4 my brain shuts off and i just play off instinct i dont get the eye strain problems because im focusing on any one thing on the screen but when im playing games like killzone single player and especially assassin's creed i end up admiring the scenery so much that i try to focus on every little detail. that is usually when it bothers me.

Yea, I had that happen to me when I bought new TVs for other rooms in the house. But just lowering it a lil bit helped a lot. No more eye strain.
