Tales of Zestiria announced for PS3 [announced worldwide]

Grab Tales of Xillia, it's easy enough to find for $30 or so now and it's a really good example of the overall quality of the series.

I dunno, I've just never seen an open-field battle system that really resonated with me. My favorites all involve separate battle screens.

Well I've never seen Tales-esque combat done in an open field before. That's the key here, Tales combat, not FF XII or Xenoblade combat (which are still good).

It'll be amazing if it's 60 fps with a giant open field. Unless they port to PS4 at current fidelity, then I guess it could happen.

Wasn't the only 30fps console game in the series a port to a less powerful system (Symphonia PS2)? I really hope the team still considers framerate a high priority.

I love how they announced it world wide for the first time.

Maybe some day in the future they'll be able to pull off a world wide simultaneous release date.

I just wished Baba had learned to not fear the west a little earlier...Tales of Hearts and Keroro RPG look sick

I'm loving the logo, the footage so far, the name, and the character designs... except for Slay's weird Colette+Lloyd fusion outfit and tiny head.

So far so good, Bamco.

I definitely hope since localization is already confirmed that the game releases fairly quickly. Having as quick a release as Vesperia is probably (certainly?) not happening but hopefully not more than a few short months (3-5 max).

Either way I'm super excited and game looks great so far IMO. I like the main character designs better than Hearts, Graces, and Xillia too.

Since they showed two characters, it's possible they might go with select-able protagonists like in Xillia.

Also I don't see where they mentioned when it would be releasing. I'm confused on why people are saying 2015 (unless that's an estimate).

"Slay"'s outfit sort of reminds me of Ethan Waber from Phantasy Star Universe.

Black pants, white over a primary color, short hair (though Ethan's spikiness is on the level of absurdity.) Slay obviously looks better than that, but I think it should be clear.

I don't like Slay or the name Slay, sounds dopey. I should add that I like how flow-y his outfit is, it's one thing I liked about Asbel's outfit. Alicia's alright from what little I've seen.

Alicia also has the white over a primary color thing (red) going on that Threi does. I hope the rest of the designs aren't as...obvious. I also echo the disappointment over multiple character designers. Wish there was just one.

Open fields are sort of alarming. Another warring kingdoms plot, it is indeed boring but stuff like plot always seems ancillary in my experience of the Tales games.

I'll be interested in the gameplay, if indeed we're getting Xenoblade style combat with seamless transitions. Beyond that, I'll be interested to see how much Graces impacts the actual battle system. Namco's timing is impeccable - someone else mentioned that 2015 PS3 Western release doesn't bode all that well for its sales prospects. I have similar ideas; either the Tales series has already made all of its converts (and it doesn't matter what console, what timeframe, etc. etc.) or the game performs modestly. In any case, choosing the last game on a platform as the experimental one is smart.

Happy to see that Namco's got confidence in this franchise out of Japan though. Very nice to see!

ToZ4/2: Ž-strain Ж for 2015

I want this game.

Would you consider this to be a good entry point for someone that's put off trying Tales games since forever? Strictly PS3-only, I mean.

It depends.

If you care about story over gameplay, go and pick up Xillia. Despite some flaws, it's a good game overall and you'll like the story.

If you care about gameplay over story, go and pick up Tales of Graces f. Story is awful, characters are bland and the epilogue feels like a fanfic. But holy shit, it has a battle system that is so awesome that made most TalesGAF overlook the other issues.

Both have funny skits, I guess.

It's sad Vesperia PS3 was not released in the West. I had to sell my 360 and that was the only exclusive I knew I would miss. Now I feel that I may buy one again for that game mostly, even if I lost my 500+h save data.

Simultaneous Japan/West announcement? Dual audio confirmed? Am... am I in the Twilight zone?

I'd offer Namco my money right now, but I'm slightly broke so they'll have to hold onto my soul as insurance until I can pay them. >_>

Where did it say Dual Audio confirmed?

That press release requires a careful read. It also includes Symphonia re-release and Xillia 2 localization stuff.

Edit: Beaten, but hopefully it sets a precedent for things to come. Maybe playing Graces in Japanese would have made the game less shit.

I'm really disappointed that they seem to be standardizing Xillia's artstyle. Slay and Alicia's designs, and what we've heard of the story so far seem incredibly bland. I hope Namco aren't assholes with the alt costume distribution this time around.

God damn it that edit :P.

Ya'll cannot beat the world's most compulsive editor :P , and yes I hope for a precedent too. Dual-audio is nice, even if it's not necessary.

I'm glad Jump Festa isn't too far away. Hopefully we'll get a better idea of what they're going for with the battle system. Crazy to think this might be the first Tales game I actually pre-order.

Definitely interested in seeing how encounters are designed and what performance is like during battles, assuming they actually are pretty seamless transitions and not them simply using more realistic and detailed terrain for battlefields.

But if they're trying seamless stuff I can see them aiming for 30 FPS and various limitations (smaller number of enemies, lower quality visual effects, sub-HD, etc.) now, while they're considering (if not fully intent on) making a PS4 version in 2015 or so that's 60 FPS with the limitations relaxed or removed.

Regarding the battle system and the fan survey:

Since they built the battle system based on fan feedback I imagine that the more "3D" battles introduced in Graces were popular among fans. But along with that I'd imagine if fans were really focused on Graces, the fast transitions to battle were likely one of the things fans brought up, and it might have given them the motivation to make the battles more seamless than ever with this game.

I wouldn't be surprised if CC came back again too. Slay/Thray is a sword user + brawler like Asbel so I can see them bringing the style shift back again. But both with improvements (and probably more variety with the style shift), of course.

Alicia is a spear user so I hope she's adept at aerial combos like Judith. Graces had no aerial combos to speak of and I hope fans brought that up so we see it in this game.

I was gonna post a giant list of my thoughts on what this game needs to be the best "Tales of..." game ever, at least from a gameplay perspective. Should I refrain? Would it be frowned upon to make a big "wall of text" post? Because I'd like to share my ideas, just don't want to flood the screen.

Agreed, would have preferred another attempt at cel-shading over this, but what can you do? I wouldn't lose sleep over it, as long as they don't have stilted character animation or any in your face low res textures I'm fine. I do think Slay looks a little "vanilla", but Alicia looks cool, and doesn't have to be showing skin to do it either. I also really hope they aren't gonna charge us for costumes, but that depends on how successful Xillia was with that, anyone have any numbers for that?

Game looks awesome. This surpassed my expectations.

And dat worldwide release... the day finally arrived ;_;

Wut WW release? MEGATON if true!!!
Slay looks a bit like Link. Alicia seems like great character design, finally wearing appropriate clothes. Honestly more hyped for this than Xillia.

I never owned a PS3 before, but one of the big reasons why I skipped Xbox One over PS4 (I now own a PS4) is the exclusives and RPGs. I just hope Gaikai will let me stream all the PS3 games I missed out including all the Tales games besides Vesperia. I'm getting super jelly now.

Should be fine. If not here then surely the community thread.

Hmmm

Sounds good to me!

I really hope you're right.

To add to my post I think "3D" and more seamless battles are a direction they'll be continuing in going for future morhership Tales titles, especially if that's what the fans want. I think seamless or somewhat seamless battles are more like a natural evolution though. 3D battles more of a stylistic choice, though still can be called an improvement.

CC and style shift are probably more of a game to game basis. The Xillia games use TP + AC and even with TP Xillia is definitely less restrictive than past Tales. Probably the same with Xillia 2 as well. So less restrictive battles should be going forward too with or without CC.

By all means, post it.
