Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Think i'm just going to stick with my panasonic plasma till a good 4k TV comes out at this point.

I would just get an OLED T.V. when they become cheaper. I remember back in 2006 when I bought my first HD TV, there were only about 15 channels that offered HD content. So it might be a while before you see some 4k stuff.

I just checked out the settings on my s60 last night. I started playing games and it looked terrible so I checked the menu. Sharpness was set to 70?!? What are they thinking. Also the 1080p pixel direct thing seemed to really change the screen resolution on PS4 but it also seemed to jack up PQ so I left it off.

Should I use 1080p pixel direct?

It's great isn't it?

I just set it to Game mode, adjusted the white balance to "Clear"? and then toned down the sharpening effect. Everything else was turned off in that mode and it looks fine to me. I left the PS4 settings on Auto and the TV and PS4 have worked it all out themselves even the chroma 4:4:4 is set correctly. Lovely.

Great set indeed. Never thought it would happen but now I see details I've never seen on my Panny ( like the 'scratches' in the left upper corner on the white start screen in Forza 5 ). Especially Resogun looks out of this world. Have my Logitech 5.1 hooked up now, and it's been a blast so far,

Did a bit a research myself and on hdtvtest.co.uk they recommend:
* gamma -1
* white balance B-gain turned down
* clear white: low

These are the settings of an owner on AVForum. Haven't tried them myself yet

Xbox One - set to Limited Range RGB and 36-bit colour.
PS4 - leave automatic.

I assume these are similar quirks to the ST. From AVS forum:

The ST60's "1080p Pixel Direct" option is for 4:4:4 input like RGB from a computer and is necessary to get full chroma resolution. Without it, fine details like alternating vertical red/blue lines get blurred, and normal-size red text on a blue background looks like crap. I posted a picture of the latter a few weeks ago. This is not an issue for normal video content, and I leave it off for my HTPC. I do turn it on for my gaming PC. The ST60 has a quirk when this is enabled, and it requires one to set the HDMI Content Type to "Photos" to avoid extreme sharpening that causes bad artifacts. When you enable "Photos", you get switched to Native color gamut, which is more saturated than Normal and requires a different calibration.

My 50" VT65B arrived on Thursday and I'm blown away. I've got Discovery HD running 24/7 zoomed in to avoid the channel logo and have mixed it up with some documentary blu rays running from my PS3.

I've backed off the contrast & sharpness to 30 and dropped the brightness to -5 for the first hundred hours, I'll turn the brightness back to 0 at around the 120ish hour point then dial up the contrast and start tweaking after 200 hours or so.

I caught myself channel sufing on the Sky guide for a good few minutes yesterday and quickly chose something to watch when I realised it had been sitting there but there is absolutely no hint of IR. I even managed to watch my Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D blu ray all the way through without getting motion sickness for the first time, the motion was so smooth.

So glad I've taken the plunge on this before they disappear, it's clearly he best set I've ever owned and I'm really looking forward to gaming on this beauty.

What would you all consider to be a great gaming TV for around 400-500. I currently have a aging Vizeo 37 inch TV that only outputs at 1080i. I would like something a little bigger but I have no clue what I am doing when it comes to TV shopping. Hoping you all could lend some assistance. Plan to order from Amazon using credit I have gathered.

I was one of the new plasma guys, worried bout IR & burn in. Its been 2 weeks with my s60 and.....

The issues r overrated. Now I did run the slides wrong for about 50 hrs but this is what I've noticed. Playing ac4 & watching football, there r measures in place to prevent ir & burn in like

1) cutscenes
2) commercials

In both instances u have a static hud that's broken up every 25 minutes gaming & 7 minutes watching football. Not long enough to cause burn in. Add in pausing the game & flipping channels burn in isnt an issue for me n the slightest

Yes but what about watching movies with letterboxes. And no I do not want to stretch screen

Just don't watch several letterbox movies back to back. The issue there is not burn-in/IR, it's aging the phosphors unevenly. After 200+ hours it becomes much less of an issue.

Thanks, will do :-)

Edit: yeah, that's awesome (it's right here still running discovery). This thing really doesn't need any sharpening. Such a nice picture!
Try a few native sources instead of using the zoom as well! Resogun on my 60ST50 is mind BOTTLING

So I get that posting pictures of televisions to show their quality is kind of a silly idea given variable camera and screen quality, but I wanted to share this shot of the W900A that really impressed me with how well it handles color. Overall the more time I spend with the TV the more I enjoy it.

I moved my consoles and tv to another, smaller room, but my Panny was way too big to enjoy. Had to find another tv. Bought the Sony KDL 42W655 ( It's called 42W653 in the UK for some reason, I live in the Netherlands myself ) and it's really unbelieveable what difference a few years make. This tv was way cheaper than my Panny 3 years ago and the quality is still awesome and for gaming it may even be on par with my Panasonic.

Has anyone found the correct settings for this TV when playing on XboxOne and PS4?

What's it called in America )-=

I'm not sure. I've watched content with the letterbox for 30-40 mins before thinkin, "oh shit they said don't do that!" Maybe a 1 of the helpful plasma vets in this thread can give us guidance.

To everyone who gives answers on this thread I truly do appreciate ya

Edit: I see the question has been answered. That I did not know

Minor update. I tried the massage screen technique and it seemed to work. The flash lighting in the lower right is way dimmer now. Looks better in dark scenes. I'm a believer.

You got this right: http://www.tvstore.be/product/306082/sony-kdl-42w655.html?ref=81022&gclid=CJGbqenytLsCFUiN3godlWQAgw ?

Thinking of buying it :)

What do you guys think is better the Samsung UN40F6300A, or the Sony W650A? I absolutely want it for gaming. I was going to get the W650A, but, 60hz is a bummer.

60Hz means no motionflow, means lower input lag

I just replaced my 46HX803 with a 50W685 (similar panel as 650 but with passive 3D) and the picture is great. A little extra softness with motion, but overall its a very impressive picture.

I've heard a thousand things, but, almost always everyone says 60hz is bad. Again I have no experience with LED/LCD. I game on a big ass top of the line CRT I got almost a decade ago. The quality is going downhill, but, I can still play current gen games with ease. No lag of any kind. The biggest issue is the image quality and text/screen cut offs.

I don't think you find a lot of issues with recent sets. People can be paranoid about things but most sets are fine. Only the mode discerning eye will notice things.

which TV is which?
W600A, W650A and W900A are VA Panels.

W800A is a regular IPS TV, and not a very good panel at that. It's simply in another league. That means image quality on any one of those TV's humiliates the W800A.

It's NOT 60 Hz, unless the US model is severely capped.

Pretty much all TV's out there are only up to 60 Hz internally (signal refresh rate) yet they refresh and create (therefore output) more frames than that; hence, a 3000 Hz plasma is still a 60 Hz set to some degree, and a Sony W900A at "240 Hz" too.

my issue with the 600 series is lack of HDMI ports, my problem with 900 is price
That's understandable and I agree, seeing the W650's exist I don't really see the point in going higher. (I also believe sensing that is the reason Sony US nuked the above 32" W650's)

But they'll still try to tempt you by capping stuff like hdmi outs and 3D.

It is 60Hz, motion flow 200Hz means nothing on this set - just marketing bollocks

The KDL42W653A is advertised by Sony as featuring Motionflow XR 200Hz, but it’s important to understand that this is simply a figure for marketing purposes (similar to Samsung’s Clear Motion Rate or LG’s TruMotion), rather than the true refresh rate of the TV. Running our reference motion resolution test pattern (Chapter 31 in the FPD Benchmark Software disc) on the Bravia W65 returned a result of 300 which is what we would expect natively from an LCD panel without the help of MCFI (motion-compensated frame interpolation).

I can deal with the lack of HDMIs with a receiver, and Sony Europe do a W685 with 3D

I guess someone could do us the favor of connecting the 42W650 to a PC and let us know what available refresh rates it has. :P
