Has Watchdogs lost all of its momentum for 2014?

The problem with watch dogs is that it just looked boring. The timing couldn't have been worse. After GTAV came out, everything from watchdogs looked boring. It looked like a reskin of assassin's creed. The hacking looked boring, the gameplay was uninspiring and the story seemed yawn worthy. It's really sad. The initial reveal showed a lot of promise but it ended up being a poor man's assassin's creed set in a modern time period.

Yes. Back in the day, Ubisoft used to produce some really inspiring games; Splinter Cell 1, Prince of Persia Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil, Rayman 1 and 2. Nowadays, even their "original" IPs are basically re-skinned sequels.

I'm sort of, kind of excited for The Division, but it does just seem like a slightly different take on every other Ubisoft open world game that they're putting out right now.

I'm not expecting Far Cry 4 to be all that different from FC3, either, probably just same shit new island. At least maybe for Far Cry 4 they could put a decent story in there, that would be acceptable to me if they're not gonna change up the gameplay.

Ever since it got pushed back, I forgot all about it. I'm still interested in the game, but not seeing much info for a long time kinda made me forget about it. Especially after seeing everything coming out for March.

I'm guessing once it's release date gets closer, the hype will be back.

Splinter Cell was a great game, now it's just a crap sell out series and look what they did to Ghost Recon. Those games used to be amazing! I think it's a problem with the formulaic approach to game design these days and risk vs reward management. I think they figured we were so starved for new IP after sequalitus that they could just throw something bare bones together and we would gawk at it cause it looked pretty. We need to not let these approaches work anymore and ask for substance.

Ubisoft will definitely put the marketing in overdrive closer to the game's release. They'll bring the hype back. And trust me the delay was more than worth it. Watch_Dogs will be a much better game than it would have been if it was released back in November.

I don't think it will matter. People who bought next gen systems will be absolutely starved for a big budget game when it launches.

It still seems to be the most wanted of the all the upcoming current gen games from the people I've talked to. Delaying it was probably smart if only because Assassins Creed has been one of the most successful launch games.

I think the absence hype on enthusiast gaming sites is while the reveal looked nice and captured people's imaginations, with subsequent preview it looks more and more like Assassins Creed in a contemporary setting.

The hype is dead, but it's still a day one purchase for me.

Man you guys are fickle. How do you keep interest in anything that isn't constantly in front of your eyes?

Not even close, Titanfall is going to crush this game esp since they're launching so close to each other and this game is launching AFTER E3! A HUGE E3! It's the E3 after a console launch, this game will totally fade away behind the hype from everything else unless they some how do one of those blitzkrieg approaches were they market it like 15 days before launch. Even still if Fall Out 4 is shown this game just dies. Ubisoft screwed up and announced this game way to early.

Possibly the most anticipated next gen launch game reduced to a tiny piece of dust in the corner of my head. Completely forgot about Watch Dogs. Was busy watching everything else.

I'm still hyped for the game.

The delay has definitely took a huge chunk out of the game's momentum though. I still think it will do well when it finally releases either way.

Nope. PS4 & The One owners are starved for games, myself included. I'm paying attention to the game, even if it is just another Ubisoft clonic game.

I think if they can get the hype train starting again this year (Happy new year! :) ), they shouldn't have many problems.
My brother was hyped about it as soon as he saw it, atm it just seems its out of his mind temporarily, just needs a reminder really...

I would only hope so. The footage we saw in the run up to release was just bad. Bad animation, bad graphics, bad story, bad gameplay and horrible physics. It would have been lucky to get a metacritic score of 50%.

Not necessarily true.

Ubisoft's biggest problems are that they're perfectionists, and they have a lot riding on them. This is a developer that is basically a cornerstone of the local economy in Quebec - to the point where they've almost become this "too big to fail" operation.

Almost all of their games released in the last five years have been continually remolded and reworked, even after being near-completion.

Splinter Cell: Conviction was going to be about a drifter Sam Fisher investigating his daughter's death for the entire game, coupled with a unique physics system and more involved melee combat. Ubisoft pulled the game for two years, believing it to be too close to Assassin's Creed, and reworked the whole thing. The final product was good, but got a lot of complaints and backlash from long-time fans.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier had a similar process - it looked completely different in its early press demos, then got pulled for a year while they reworked it. The game came out to a more or less ambivalent response.

Now they're doing the same thing with both Rainbow Six Patriots and this game. I wish they'd make up their damn mind and release games, because all this delaying kills the hype for a lot of people instantly, and it's very difficult (if not impossible) to get that kind of spark back.

Just look at what's happening with the Thief reboot - it's been in development for so long (and has been on pre-order for such a long time) that online gaming stores have been slashing the price by anywhere from 20-50% during sales to move units. For a game that hasn't been released yet.

I pretty much lost my interest when I saw that it appeared that the main gameplay element involved 3rd person cover-based shooting.

When I realized that, I let it an audible sigh and let my shoulders slump in disappointment.

...is this real life?
You obviously didn't hear about Ubisoft's internal mock reviews. It was scoring in the 50's. One should assume mock reviews are scored higher than press reviews. Remember medal of honor warfighter's mock reviews vs real reviews?

That's it. Story and setting also look very uninspired. There's no way this will last 10 years like Assassin's Creed.

I don't know if Assassin's Creed necessarily lasted this long because it was good so much as because it was popular. Call of Duty is a series that is perhaps not that inspired, but it has lasted for a decade.

Yep, it's Rayman Legends all over again. Ubisoft will shrug and wonder why a game that had massive hype sold so poorly after being delayed a year.

To...many...freaking...video's of teasers and what not. PR STHAP PLEASE STHAP IT! It just killed the hype of this game.

At this moment i am not going to buy it full price.

I think if its only 'OK' it will do much worse in March than 'just ok' would have done in November.

People can wait to see reviews and user comments now, whereas in November its was a buy because there wasnt anything else.

But...

If its awesome it will be fine. Not many awesome AAA games with AAA marketing budgets do bad. If its so-so, well it'll suffer.

Personally I was not put off by the E3 showing as some were, but delaying the most hyped next gen game by 6 months a few weeks before pressing disks tells me that Ubi were not confident in the game at all, and considering they were willing to put out the mess that was AC3 last year this completely killed my interest. Hopefully they manage to pull it together but they have everything to prove now whereas before I was pretty stoked for it.

I never understood the hype for it in the first place. I put it down to being a new IP and the fact it looked pretty so people were all like "NEXT GEN IS COMING!" The fact that this thread even exists sort of semi-confirms that it wasn't the game itself that was appealing. You could announce Half-Life 3 tomorrow and the internet would explode, so delays and waiting shouldn't decrease interest in a game that is truly interesting.

Yes but I think that's a good thing. The game will clearly be better than what would have been released in Nov. Right now, we're suffering from too many good open world games. With GTA V and AC 4 being so good, I don't see space for another massive open world at the same time - they're too much of a time sink for somebody to play all three. This way Ubisoft likely boosted AC4 sales (the game deserved it) and moved watchdogs into a window where there aren't too many other games coming out, and Infamous is the only other announced open world game (My guess is Watchdogs comes out a month or so after Infamous).

So weird I remember seeing the first trailer and smiling like an insane person because it kinda was a first look at what's possible next gen and now we kinda had that transition and I look at it again and don't feel a thing.

My bet is that it hasn't capitalised on the hacking/social engineering aspects nearly enough, especially in the multiplayer. People will buy it for the graphics alone, maybe the sequel will deliver on some of the promises.

I honestly don't think it had any momentum. It was just one of those early glimpses of what might be.

I was crazy hyped for this when I saw that first E3 demo, it was pretty much the perfect way to showcase the game. Since then hype levels seem to have dropped off for a lot of people including myself. Hopefully nearer release I will board that hype train once again

I'm still very much interested in the idea of Watchdogs. Even if everything isn't 100% how I like them to be, it's still gearing up to be a very entertaining game.

I've had it on pre-order for the PS4 since Amazon listed it way back on February 20th. I'm not planning on removing it. Bring on the entertainment, Ubi! I trust you.

A next-gen GTAV announcement between now and Watch Dogs release would be Ubi's worst nightmare.

Still pretty excited for it. Although I really think Ubisoft should do some cross-promoting with Person of Interest. I would totally buy a DLC costume for the "Man in the suit".

Being from Chicago, Watchdogs was definitely on my list of games to see this year. Oddly enough though I feel like the game should have came out last year with all the press and promo around it. In addition, we really hadn't seen much from that game besides the same demo or mission over and over again.

Now with its delay, which is looking more like it will drop sometime in the late Summer or early fall, it has almost lost all my interest. Does anybody else feel this way? It was one of my most anticipated games now I couldn't really care much about it even if it did come out early.
I hear you. I feel I know everything about the game without spending a minute with it. They drag this on for too long.

After the launch reset, I'd say it's good that it loses some hype.

Now they can reset and restart the love as we get closer and closer to release!

Still preordered and day one, baby!

I never had any hype for it only thing that pu ts a tingling feeling in me is kh3 and ffxv and the new tales game regardless I'm still looking forward to watch dogs

I'm still very interested and shall see how it's looking when it reappears. No point judging a game until it's released. I do feel however that Ubisoft is to focused on trying to find a 'magic formula' factor to maximise review scores rather than being daring and trying new things. Their games are all starting to feel like one another to an extent. I'm also worried about them using mock review scores as I wouldn't use reviewers as an indication for fuck all quality wise though I guess they want high scores for advertising purposes. Remember when EA said mock reviews for Medal Of Honor Warfighter were in the 80s ? Exactly. For all we know it could be very different and ambitious with mock reviews complaining it's not dumbed down enough. OK not likely given Ubisofts recent games but still....

It's really fallen off my radar to be honest.

Ubisoft did a great job of retooling Blacklist after it's lackluster reveal. All the air strikes and scripted room clearing events were removed, and the end product delivered a satisfying stealth experience... even if it didn't sell that great. Hopefully they can pull off something similar with Watchdogs, because it seemed like with every new video they would show, the more lifeless and boring the game would look. I'm fine with it not coming out until later in the year, as long as Ubisoft use the time to make it the best game they can. The last thing I want is a modern day Ass Creed reskin.

considering I've completely forgotten about this game until I saw this topic, I'd say yeah, momentum is gone. I've lost all interest

It went from Day 1 because I needed a game to get with next-gen to a wait till it's $20 because other shit will probably be out and I won't be jonesing for 1 game to get with my new system.
