That was the point I wanted to make, but you put it better. We dont know all facts, but a lot of people instantly jump to conclusions. FYI the whitests of white knights could be the biggest creeps out there.
he sent creepy messages and admitted to it. there is no ambiguity in this situation. its you. you are the biggest creep in this thread.

I see a doofus embarrassing himself and a woman who doesn't appear to care all that much.

How did that chat see the light of day, by the way?

Its hard to believe that he is actually a fully grown adult.

I'm not telling anyone that. I'm saying that we need to draw a line somewhere. There's 7 billion people on this planet. Every trivial little thing is going to offend at least one of those so you cannot simply put everything everyone finds offensive on a list and say nobody's allowed to do any of those things. A society has to come to some sort of agreement as to what can be considered harassment and what can't be. Now, once a person tells someone else that they find something offensive and that person still does it, that's a different matter, of course. But that's not the case here which I've already adressed in my post above.

Why are you so hung up on his? The signs point to her getting harassed by his creepy texts.

This isn't that complicated.

And society considers this harassment.

like if they were to measure the stupidity on a scale the readings would show that the sheer magnitude - the sheer FORCE of his incompetence - could send shockwaves strong enough to decimate entire civilizations

she wasn't verbal and strong enough in telling him no though

so like, her fault

Super disgusting, the kind of thing that ends a career regardless of the reason why it happened. What a terrifying situation to be in, repeated creepy sexual advances from the head of a fairly prominent site that can have a big impact on your games visibility, a personal/professional nightmare situation.

Edit - I think many here who are questioning her responses need to consider just how much the balance of power sits with journalists in the dev/journalist relationship, she would've been avoiding burning that bridge at all costs (and constantly hoping he would just STOP).

Whether or not she should have cried "harassment!" or not doesn't really address how damn unprofessional this is on his part (as the founder of a well-known[?] site, he really should have been smarter about this).
She ignored it than causing a hissy fit and asked (hoped?) he was drunk. The ball was in her court if he was drunk typing gross things (repeatedly).

I'm glad he's taking steps to better himself, but yuck... won't change that I see him as a creep right now.

That's literally 100% exactly what you did. You have standards of conduct for her as a victim, but not for him. That makes you a hypocrite as well as a supporter of socially maladjusted behavior. Bravo.

And society also constantly evolves and changes. And it constantly realises that its previous assumptions have been wrong.
Exactly. Eventually you will realize your previous assumptions were wrong.

I know myself and the culture I'm part of enough to know that in a situation of constant sexual harassment, I'd plan his/her murder before I asked for help.
Jesus. Thats not a good thing.

The guy has issues and I have no problem with him being outed for them and the repercussions that will ensue, but for fuck's sake I think she should have said something as well. Ignoring and joking about it over text just seems like the worst way to respond to that kind of behavior.

Would you guys feel like a "victim" if a girl from your job did this to you? Not saying you'd be happy.. maybe some would. But would you feel as a "victim" from text messages?

Like if some drunk co worker sent you a picture of her boobs... would people classify you as the victim of that photo assault? Ha.

I don't know. Drunk texting. And then drunk texting your co worker. Wild stuff. For me personally, a really awkward read. Like something Michael Scott would do... or something somewhat foot in mouth worthy. Reminds me of that dude who met that girl in a coffee shop and then Vined her a selfie of him just staring into the camera with Drake in the background on.... LMAO... Awkward!

yeah well society evolved to the point where this is harassment

dismissed.

Yeah women spoke up about how this shit sucks.

But we don't speak up enough though.

I think you and some others need to realize sexual harassment in or involving the workplace is a complicated issue precisely because women keep quiet due to the impact on their damn job and livelihood.

Right. Sexual harassment is now taken more seriously than it used to be. On the whole though it's still not taken as seriously as it should be so hopefully society evolves in that direction.

The conversation LOOKED awkward, it was clear that she wasn't reciprocating.

That being said, I hope this thread doesnt end up revolving around stupid tweets now.

I could be wrong but I think jaffe was arguing on a legal basis for harassment. I have no idea what the laws are so I have no opinion on it in terms of the law.

But this is harassment. But your argument you'd have to wait until a women is physical harm if not worse before we consider it harassment. You don't move goal posts like that in situations like this.

Jaffe keeps digging his own grave.

Reminds me of a friend who has very light Aspergers. Lovely chap but constantly misreads social cues and has a very poor understanding of people politely telling him to back off.

He needs someone to be straight up and say NO or he carries on, seems like Jaffe is in the same boat, or at least thinks sexual advances are ok unless, and only IF they say no.

I'm really really hesitant to play the "some people must identify with him" card. Like, I can't recall the last time I did. But its basically the only way I can explain some of the reactions in here

You shouldn't be hesitant. Of course a lot of people must identify with him. If they didn't then incidents like this would be anomalous, rather than a regular occurrence.

Fuck off, Jaffe !

I *think* what Jaffe's trying to say - read his whole timeline - is that the harassment is disgusting, but the immediate response of Twitter and forums is to go full on torches and pitchforks, and a more measured response is better. He's tried to bring up some possible reasons why this *might* not have been as awful as it probably is.

That said, he's doing it on Twitter and you know how he is....can be combative. So maybe a call to chill out and get all the facts isn't coming across very well.

I'm guessing that if the game industry was not so predominately male, that douchebag would never have thought his behavior was acceptable.

Ah okay, I'm unaware of the context of that conversation.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, Twitter is a really inefficient method of getting across points like this.
