Best endings to game?

toki-tori-onlive.jpg

Yeah, that's right. Toki fucking Tori.
Why, you ask ?

Well let me tell you.
So in Toki Tori you play a bird. That yellow bird in the picture above. I don't know if he is called Toki or if he is called Tori. Fuck it, we'll just call him Toki Tori.
Now you controll this bird and your objective in each level is to rescue bird Eggs. These eggs might be lost in a lush forest, trapped underwater inside seashells....hell, they can even be caged in a fucking haunted castle like you can see here:

toiki2.jpg

Can you imagine coming out into this world inside a cage? Well I can't because it's just too goddamn horrible. If that doesn't make you feel sorry for these unborn birds, I don't know what will.

Anyway...this game isn't easy. This isn't like the puzzles in Portal....this game is fucking hard. It can get very very tricky. I know very few people that finished all the levels in this game...it requires a lot of patience and focus.
However, I made a vow that I would finish the damn game and I did. I saw it through to the end.
To do that...I put my time, sweat and tears into saving those eggs. I put my heart into this game. I listened to meditation music while playing so that I could focus more on solving the puzzles.

And I was happy I did...I solved the puzzles...made it through the challenges and helped Toki Tori save the eggs, which for all I know are part of his yet unborn family. For all I know some of these eggs were laid down by some female bird with whom Toki Tori had coitus with. For all I know...these eggs might carry Toki Tori's sons and daughters.

So I was proud. I solved the last puzzle, which took me quite a fucking while. And there was a cutscene coming...I just knew it. I could feel it. A game this hard without an ending cutscene would be a disgrace. A game in which I put in 30 hours needed to have one final screen to congratulate me or to show me a conclusion to all my hard work.

And indeed...there was a final cutscene. Nothing could have prepared me for it. Here's a screenshot:

I wanted to fucking cry.

This was a big, big fuck you to the face. All this time I thought I was helping out these birds by rescuing them. But no...I was nothing but a puppet in Toki Tori's plan to fulfill his ungodly urge to consume his own kind.

Toki Tori is a cannibal.

That's the ending. Toki Tori takes all those eggs you helped him "rescue", and makes a fucking omelette or some shit. Toki fucking Tori is an ungodly cannibal.

So no, this is not the best ending to a game. Hell, it's the most awful one. But it left the biggest impression inside my now, forever scarred, soul.... so I thought it should be shared in this thread.

Pandora's Tower
Dragon's Dogma

Good call. The former has some of the best variety in reward that I've come across. I got two of them and then YT'd the rest and was blown away.

DD was sobering and cool. Not original really but effective given the iffy rest.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Zelda: OOT

These stick out.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Glorious ending, even if the last few levels were a bit boring. Never expected how it turned out.

Having just finished 999.

The answer is 999.

I don't think other endings even come close.

Sure the Last of Us was emotional, Mass Effect was epic and AC 2 was out of nowhere, but 999 is the most well thought out plot I've ever experienced in this medium.

Someone posted about Terranigma in a topic like this many years ago and I remember I decided to check it out.

And you know, I've played many games with endings I loved like Chrono Trigger, most Final Fantasies, MGS3, etc... And despite never having played Terranigma myself, I have to agree with that game having the singular best ending I've seen in a game.. It's really beautiful and evocative.

Amazing how a SNES game from 1995 can convey so much emotion... That's why the whole "Are video games art or not?" debate is largely moot to me.. Whether they are or not, they've given us some our most emotional and reflective moments in all of media.

This man has seen the light!

Mass Effect 3: Citadel

This is the true ending to the trilogy, a fun last adventure with your friends and a nice send off.
Also, it is incredibly quotable:

- "This is why I love hanging out with you guys, why shoot something once when you can shoot it 46 more times?"

- "Do I really sound like that? I have to go now... I have to go Now... I have to Go now..."

- "Why don't you two just get it over with and kiss?"

- "She messed with my hamster guys... this is personal... can we check on my fish!?"

My god that is hilarious. Absolutely fantastic.

The new Shadow Warrior
It was really quite nice. You save the world but in the shittiest way possible. Didn't expect to want a sequal to expand on the story, but now I do.

Plus the final boss fight was fun.
No, not that shitty thing in the giant armor that takes forever to kill and sometimes randomly decides to use a combo of moves that has a chance to be an unavoidable instakill if you get unlucky. The really fun three stage monster fight that built on everything you've learned throughout the game and was really fucking hard. That was great.

In terms of drama, definitely MGS3, Season 1 of TWD, and The Last of Us.
In terms of badass-ness, Metal Gear Rising. Fighting in a wasteland on fire while this plays was awesome.

I teared up when this appears:

"It's been a good ride."

"...the best."

Such a perfect way to end the whole trilogy, right there, those words................

My favorite of all time is probably Max Payne 2.
Throughout the first two games Max talks a lot about fate, "There are no choices in life, nothing but a straight line. The illusion comes afterward when you ask 'Why me?' Or 'What if?'" He can't come to terms with the loss of his wife and daughter saying, "Killing them all (the ones responsible) didn't bring them back." Then at the end he realizes closure isn't born from revenge, but love and while he's with Mona he says, "This is love. When someone shows you there is a choice, that you can put down your gun."
And after all the dreams of his wife, walking the blood lines in the first game, and "I had a dream about my wife, in it I murdered her for my lover." After he falls for Mona, literally. At the end comes the final panel,
"I had a dream of my wife. She was dead. But it was all right."
:')

damn, i did not expect that sort of thing from max payne. i will add the games to my wishlist, then wait some time until i forget about the ending. probably a year or two. and then i will buy it and play it.

So many good choices already posted here.

Some of my favs:

FF8: The conclusion of the epic journey, the home-video footage over the credits and dat post-credits scene. Fantastic.

FF9: Mostly the same as above, but a lot more interesting since the characters were so much more endearing.

MGS3: Salute.gif Nothing else needs to be said

Valkyrie Profile 2: Because it managed to tie up an otherwise clusterfuckery of a game.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: DAT ENDING !!
and then LoS 2 happened -_-

Darksiders "No . Not Alone"
and then Darksiders 2 happened ..

The Wonderful 101 has an awesome endgame.

I really like the final boss sequence to the Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks too. Each segment is really different from the other and it makes the sequence very fun.

Pandora's Tower, which I played recently, also has a great final boss. The music used for the fight feels more like a celebration rather than a battle, as if the developers are congratulating you for making it this far.

Red Dead Redemption.

By no means my favourite game (the second half dragged big-time...) but the "pre-ending" had me sobbing....

Those mentioning the Mass Effect ending have brought back some fond memories too. The lead up (and soundtrack!) really were great.....

Mass Effect 1. Everything was just so damn cinematic.

My reaction post-boss fight:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I neeeeed you to recooooooover

I have yet to play a single stretch of a video game that I enjoyed as much as Virmire -> Ilos -> Citadel -> Ending in ME1. Just 3-4ish straight hours of amazement.

999 has by far my favorite ending in a video game. Though Ever 17 (by the same writer, no less) is up there with 999 if you're counting strict VN's (as in no gameplay, just occasional choices) as a game.

I also really liked Persona 3's ending.

Many people would disagree, but I simply love the good ending to Bioshock 1, it was surprisingly a heartwarming moment in a very grim game.

Persona 3, it was just one breathtaking moment followed by another, and the very last moment just hits you right at the heart.
Portal 2 is the same, for a game that relies on comedy, I did not expect such a beautiful ending.
Ghost trick is another.
Ace Attorney 3,Spec Ops The line and MGS3 also come to my head.
I want to add Persona 4's epilogue, I gave the port some flack for a lot of the way it handled some things, but looking back at it, the ending was something it did perfectly.

Monkey Island. Hands down....best ending ever. I think that game did some serious damage to my facial muscles. Laughing holds some serious risks.

the last of us had a spectacular ending, kinda sad, gut wrenching and awesome at the same time.

i thought gta-v had probably three of the most solid unexpectedly great endings for a video game in a while especially the
Kill Michael ending and dialogue.

ffx (which im replaying right now) has a great ending but i haven't seen in in about 10 years so i can't remember how it compares.

Persona 4's ending makes you wish you could forget the entire game just to replay it fresh all over again.

Yup. And it's really simple.
But the parallelism between taking a train to leave Inaba and finishing the game it's really touching. You're leaving that place, you know it won't be the same even if you return to that town. And at that point you love the characters. Everything is so well put together (even the fucking song)... First game that made me cry only due to the fact that it had finished.

Ico
Journey
Flower
SOTC
Uncharted 2
TLOU (and the recent DLC)
Silent Hill 2
Portal 2
Half Life 2

to name a few.

But most of all Tearaway.

Gabriel Knight: - Sins of the Fathers. Just a nice, quiet moment with the main characters, reflecting on their experiences and showing how much they had grown as people, and how their relationship was changing.
