‘The Walking Dead’ – Season 5, Part 1 – Sundays on AMC

I enjoyed this episode. At least the second half of it. Some solid action, drama and the imposing threat of that big zombie army.
The sex scene was suprizing. I was disappointed we didnt get a good look at the hot pig-tailed girl, but at least the writers touched on the subject.
I think the show is much better when it concentrates on small groups of people trying to survive in dangerous environments, rather than having a big bunch of people sitting around on a farm, a small town or in a prison.
This season has been the best one so far for me.

I don't really see Eugene being smarter than everyone else. Where is this coming from? Yes, he MacGuyver'd the battery to start a fire and sabotaged the bus, but why is there this assumption that since he said he was smarter than everyone else, he actually is?

He's survived this far based solely on his ability to manipulate people into doing what he wants. There's a reason that Abrams speech to Glen about how there are only strong people left now was put in this episode. Eugene's strength is his intelligence. I guess the battery trick the sabotage, the fire hose and the manipulation of Abram wasn't enough for you but I think it's clear what the writers are going for with his character. I'm sure he'll be doing more 'smart stuff' in the future,

The waterhose was hilarious.

I think we all knew eugene was full of shit but i was kinda secretly hoping he really was a scientist with a mullet.

Also, he knows what a shmup is. Does Rick know what a shmup is? I don't think so.

I hope they do. I was waiting for him to say that, but he didn't. =(

Another solid episode in my opinion. I feel like they've been doing a great job balancing things that happen in the comic with little tweaks and new things in the show. At first I was pretty upset that they weren't following the comics more closely in the previous seasons, but after seeing what the showrunners and writers have done this season, I believe I prefer it this way.

The water hose scene was pretty awesome.

So do you guys think they'll kill someone or multiple characters off in the group in the mid season finale? If so, who do you think they'll kill?

I kind of wish they'd structure episodes more like Game of Thrones and visit each or least more than one group throughout an episode. Feels like it slows everything down when we don't see certain characters for weeks at a time.

I understand what you're saying, but GoT doesn't have commercials, so it's a true hour long show compared to TWD which is loses roughly 20 minutes due to commercial time. I wouldn't mind them visiting two different groups during some episodes that would normally be structured to focus on just one group, but I think anything more than that would be too much for the relatively small amount of time the show has each week.

I think Beth or Carol are biting the dust in the midseason finale. Only because there was a bit of a focus on them throughout so far. Carol at the start and Beth at slabtown. If it's beth I hope that Noah lives!

I think Noah will stick around and lead them to a community since he spoke of one in Richmond, VA that had walls.

I agree though, I think Beth or Carol are most likely to die even though I don't want Carol to! I think Tara is up in the air as well. I like her character and would be sad if she died as well.

The zombies are really inconsistent though. In some episodes they grab a full grown man and pull them, break rib cages open, topple fences and yet fall and break apart from a water cannon.
that is very true. I remember that they can actually run when they want to.

in this case however I think that it makes sense being destroyed like that from a water cannon.

the reaction in the ending was pretty justified. besides those random flashbacks (is this Lost now?) the episode wasn't too bad.
(eugene is full of shit because this show needs to go on for 5 more seasons at least :p)

Eh, he told one huge lie that has saved him this whole time. I'm open to him ending up proving how smart he is in the future, but I just don't see how one lie that has gotten better people killed and a couple of parlor tricks make him intelligent.

That said, I am enjoying having his character on the show. I'm pretty damned bored with Rick and the fact that everyone gets along so well makes for some dull moments. It's also good to have some less "bad-assey" characters since the walkers aren't much of a threat anymore. Having wimps like Eugene and the priest will be sort of nice.

They've been decaying. Their skin is falling off on its own so a high pressure water cannon should be able to do the job. They mentioned that they've been altering the makeup of the walkers as the series goes on to show decay.

But that's not what people are saying really. We've seen horribly decayed zombies rip open a cow, yet that same zombie couldn't keep a grip on a panicking kid. Then that same zombie ripped open a fucking rib cage with it's decaying fingers.

Zombies are quiet and sneaky, no wait they are loud and obvious, zombies are strong enough to rip open a human with fingers, no wait they are horribly decaying and get wrecked by a hose.

The show has never had a consistency with zombie strength.

I don't remember the cow and the kid scene specifically, but I'm always telling myself "yeah well, old weaker zombies, mixed in with new fresh ones".

I get annoyed with how all the main characters always wrestle the zombies for a bit and then gets away, but whenever there's a minor character or enemy, they get bit in 3 seconds. Obviously we wouldn't be following the story of people getting eaten immediately. Though I think I would enjoy a show which every week showed us a bunch of new people doing stupid mistakes and getting bitten.

One thing I didn't like was the part with the firetruck and Eugene just blasting zombies with water, they were way too fragile imo. Those hoses probably have a great punch to them but still, felt a little overboard.

On 30 September 2010, during a protest demonstration against the Stuttgart 21 project in Germany, a demonstrator was hit in the face by a water cannon.[6] Dietrich Wagner, a retired engineer, suffered from the damage to his eyelids, a fracturing of a portion of the retinal bone, and damage to the retinas.[7] The eye injuries thus inflicted on the man resulted in near-complete loss of eyesight.[6][8] Graphic imagery was recorded of the event, sparking a national debate about police brutality and proportionality in the use of state force.

Zombies' strength has never been in their physical prowess or constitution. It's in their numbers. It makes complete sense that a person can easily break away from or handle one zombie. It's multiple zombies from all directions that are the problem.

Is it just me or are these (Abraham and co.) characters the least interesting on the show right now?

I much preferred Beth's arc, it's an interesting complex. I love this show, but I absolutely hate when the fracture the group sometimes. It yields episodes with characters I just don't care about and i end up having to wait 2-3 episodes before interesting stuff happens again.

I'm glad next episode is Carol/Daryl, though. I really want to know what's happening with them.

I have to agree. Though, I'm not 100% on who's the most interesting character right now. I used to really not care for Carol, not even when she became "hard" lately... but compared to the rest right now... ? Yeah sure, why not.

I'm glad next episode is Carol/Daryl, though. I really want to know what's happening with them.

I hope it won't be another full hospital episode, I want the story to move on from this, even though I enjoyed the Beth ep. I'm hoping it won't end with Darryl coming out of the bushes like we've seen. And I wish that Dawn woman would join them somehow.

It's kinda' obvious if you think about it. Scientist with a mullet, talks about videogames, gives vague answers about his mission.

Yeah. Just the way he was explaining it all drew red flags. Purposely being obfuscatory. Saying the one thing people on the verge of suicide would want to hear that he can end this. I'd have strangled him to death then and there after he says the I'm still smarter than you.

Here's some random mullet podunk hick who is throwing out big words, talking about fighting fire with fire, all these random names and terms. Anyone with a basic understanding of biology could see he was talking shit. "I'm going to go to DC, work my magic, target the dead and bam". Except how can anyone engineer some kind of pathogen to target human dead and not the living? If the dead are walking, pretty sure no virus will take them out that won't also take out the living. People were just naive and hopeful. I hope this guy gets killed soon.

Team Eugene for life, he has been a great addition to the cast.

Because he actually is. On top of what the other posters have said, don't forget when he calculated the travel time of Glen in his head, and then manipulated the entire situation so that he could intersect with them. He is absolutely a notch above your average person and had no reason to lie about that when coming clean, he probably could have made a good scientist were it he applied himself in life.

Bonus points: The crew gives him shit about his navigating skills in that episode, referencing how he frequently got them 'lost' taking 'detours'.

I didn't know either, but I didn't even know Abraham's name until this episode. I still don't know what half of them are called.

Not sure that it was really heavily hinted at before this episode, or at all?

One of the other characters straight up said that they were a couple before this. And Abraham had some dialogue with another character where he said he knew Eugene would check out Rosita often and he thought it was harmless.

In a world where zombies exist in the first place, especially one where zombies are explicitly dead and not just crazed, I'm not sure we should assume any normal biological rules would apply.

I'm surprised at how much I enjoy Tara's presence. She is kind of a breath of fresh air. Hope he sticks around.

The Eugene thing threw me for a loop, I don't think he's gonna come out of that punch to the face though. I can't imagine hitting the ground that hard and being able to sleep/walk it off.

I have to admit, I can't stand Abraham. His dominance thing along with his "internally super insecure about his decisions" thing makes him incredibly annoying to deal with. He was so sure about his choice with Eugene and now all of this has left him basically useless. All for nothing kinda deal. Makes me really curious if they are going to finally backtrack or if they are going to really try to push through that massive horde somehow. I doubt they will push through that considering they are heavily under supplied and lack the resources.

I'm pretty stoked for the next episode considering that preview, however. :O

I'm pretty sure Eugene told them the truth just to ensure they don't have to try to cut through the horde. There is no reason to risk it now, luckily. It will be interesting to see how the groups combine now with Abe having seemingly nothing to work for and Eugene being just Eugene, and not the savior of the universe.

anybody else watching z-nation too? I thought last fridays recent episode was better than last sundays TWD....

I actually look forward to z-nation more each week than TWD. It's a ridiculous show and doesn't try to be serious at all, at least I hope it's not.

I think I really want a zombie series that actually starts at hour zero (or even earlier) and continues. That is easily the most interesting part of any zombie media and is missing in both shows.

He was out cold before he hit the ground, I'm sure he will be fine. Like drunk drivers who never get seriously injured in an accident because their bodies are jelly like instead of super tense.

"It's definitely something that will be explored," executive producer Robert Kirkman tells The Hollywood Reporter of Maggie's seeming lack of interest in her sister. "Maggie is aware that her sister is out there. Because of the nature of this world, she is probably a little bit more willing to admit that she is more than likely dead than Daryl is. That's Daryl's M.O. Daryl is somebody who wouldn't stop looking for Sophia. He is not somebody that is going to accept reality in the way some of these other characters will."

"You can also complain that Maggie hasn't expressed too much loss over Hershel just because we haven't spent a great many scenes talking about the loss of her father," says Kirkman. "There's been so much other stuff going on that this character is dealing that there hasn't been an opening where she would sit down and say, 'Oh my gosh, she's still out there. What can we do?'"

"Daryl and Carol hadn't gone on a mission to find Beth until they saw that car. There are really no options here. If Maggie had somehow been with Daryl in that scene, she would have been racing after that car jut as intently as Daryl had," Kirkman adds. "The story just hasn't shaken down that way. We will be dealing with it in upcoming episodes and you'll definitely see where Maggie stands on this. I do stand by the fact that the character's behavior is very much in line with the way we've established her."

He seems to be forgetting that Maggie had several days after the prison and before Terminus to mourn Hershel and/or search for Beth, but chose to maniacally search for Glenn instead. Also, she had time after Terminus and before the church, and then in the bus, and again in the abandoned library. But, whatever.

I'm very interested to see how they handle the whole Maggie/Beth thing when they finally get to it.
