But then what are they going to arrest minorities and the poor for?

Check and mate.
Gotta make sure lawyers cops and politicians are "cleaning up the streets". And that prisons are nice and full, and everyone's pocket is nice and full.

Although I will throw in fuck cocaine. Cocaine users tend to get god complexes.

I hate when they over exaggerate the prices of drug busts. Even at 20k/ki street price, it's only $130,000,000.

It's all for show anyway. It's not like this bust will have any noticeable effect on useful metrics like lowered drug use or lowered violence related to drugs. It sure makes for a snappy headline and photo op though.

I'm guessing all of those privitized prisons in the states would be up in arms over the legalization of recreational drugs. I'm sure at least one of the operating companies behind them would lobby against this for the sole reason it would mean less criminals being sent through the system. Inmates = revenue.

And they've actually lobbied for harsher sentencing on petty drug offenders. It's been documented.

Could of been pure (75-90%) cocaine, ready to be fucked with when it hits the streets which would eventually cause its value to decrease.

I remember when a massive bust happened in the UK a few years back, they found a ferry with shitloads worth about £300 million/90% pure.

ahhh here it is.

When keepin it real goes wrong. Very, very wrong.
Having never ever even tried cocaine in my life I could not imagine what sticking your hooter in a big pile of pure and taking a big sniff would be like.

I definitely have never had it.

Honest.

Its very numbing at first. The back of your face, throat and nose area goes all numb before you feel the fun effects.

Fuck will that bust drive up the price of an eighth or what? I've got a... friend... who asked me to find out ya see. Ahem.

They could really put a dent in criminals profiting by legalizing everything.

This. Tax it, use the taxes to fund drug treatment programs/health care, continue to discourage its use, in the same way that tobacco and (to a much less extent, unfortunately) alcohol are discouraged. There would still be testing for jobs were being high puts other people's lives at direct risk (transportation, construction, etc.).
So stupid to let the cartels get away with all this money.

My guess is that it'll never happen though: the police need an easy excuse to harass people and the incarceration and public safety industry makes too much money from the war on drugs.

In a lot of the drug discussions here a lot of people brung this up, but they fail to realize that once its legalized its business as usual for the cartels. I don't think they'll stop stop selling drugs once its legal, once its legal they no longer have to smuggle the drugs and their business will be as profitable because the money spent to smuggle will instead be used to pay government tax, if they choose to pay at all.

with legal weed?

Except they won't be as profitable due to corporate competition. I'm sure there will be a huge difference in quality. Corporations will have the logistics, marketing, and quality that will simply swallow the cartel's market share and force them into pushing other drugs to compensate for lost revenue, but it will be futile because their main cash cow is marijuana. Billion-dollar industry right there into organized crime. Taking 50% of their revenue is a huge blow.
