Natsume's Book of Friends 7-8

I like how Natsume's personal life and journey is integrated into this series, even though each episode is primarily about the stories of the youkai he encounters.

Chihayafuru 4

This show good. Chihaya cute. Karuta boring (but the seriousness with which they take the 'sport' is pretty amusing, enough to keep me interested whenever they focus on it in the show. I giggled when they did that slow-motion card flip at the end). Team Taichi.
I thought we were (dude)bros. :(

Tamayura was putting me to sleep at 8pm. I didn't dislike it but what a snoozfest. On the other hand, Mirai Nikki is pretty awesome after one ep :D

I like Tamayura, but I can't deny it's often dull and insubstantial, especially after the first episode. Sometimes there's nothing to keep my interest beyond the nice background art.
I don't deny that SatoJun shows aren't for everyone, but you sort of know exactly what you're going to get when you watch one of these shows. It's not like the girls are going to be forced to solve puzzles or something crazy like that!

Jex, you are watching those Tenchi episodes super slow.

Man the OVA Boxset looked so cool when it was released. It was back when DVD was still not fully adopted and it was expensive as hell.
Actually, I finished it ages ago.

Also, the BD set is the way to go. That thing is beautiful.

Sounds to me like someone isn't watching their share of visual kei PVs. This vid is basically the genre's aesthetic.
Actually, that's what I wanted to associate it with at first but I'm not familiar enough with the genre to be sure it was correct.

Black Lagoon is legit as hell.
Make sure to watch Roberta's Blood Trail when you finish too. I'm assuming you're doing both seasons first though.

Sounds like Aria. I like it, but it's hard to stay awake sometimes.

Oh, yeah, they'd be on the lighter end of things, but they definitely fit.

Well then I have seen all of Oshii's involvement in Patlabor, I suppose. Fabulous! Now just a bunch of shitty live-action and about 100 episodes of UY and a movie to go before I ascend to the next plane of existence.
No, there are two OVAs. The original OVA was done by Oshii and set the stage for the movies. The second OVA is unrelated to the first and is just a sequel to the TV show.

Is anything this season really clicking for you guys? I havent followed much due to work so a few recommends will be amazing, my tastes as follows :

Bakemonogatari
Durarara!
xxxHolic
Black Lagoon
Natsume
Nodame Cantabile

I lean heavily towards ghost stories/occult and cyberpunk.

Oshii didn't do the TV series or its OVA sequel.
I'm pretty sure Oshii was involved in Patlabor TV but I'm not sure to what extent, clearly he wasn't the director or anything. There are even some Patlabor TV/UY episodes that have extremely similar plots, but then again, that doesn't mean anything.

Apparently he helped with screenplays.

I'm not watching anything this season but the comedies--Ben-To, Working'!!, Boku Wa Tomodachi ga Sunkai--which are pretty great, but it does seem like you should give Guilty Crown a shot. It'd touch on that cyberpunk nerv.

As for the occult... Can't help you there, bud. I don't even think anything along that line is airing this season.

Bleach 342

I'm super late on this one, but, uh... wtf? This is the weirdest ep of Bleach I've ever seen. It's like a shipper's dream just went and materialized all over my tv screen. All the little emotional touches, enough to kill a man.

Really? I found this episode to make the most sense of any episode thus far. Everything (sans one event) is rather straight forward so it takes little explanation to get with things. Maybe I glossed over the confusing bits?
Seems so... because yeah, I didn't think it made more sense.

He's
spirited away, presumably. Right after he was talking to Sakai about the disappearances he himself then vanishes. We've been shown that symbol before (Masazumi's mother) so that "serial killer" that was brought up before is who takes him (or, Shyamalantwist he is the killer).
Spirited away? What? Also, I'd forgotten about some "serial killer", had one been mentioned? I also don't remember that mark. It was seen at Masazumi's mother's murder scene bit? I didn't remember that at all.

Also, what disappearances was he talking about? Or did he just say people had vanished or something? It probably went by too fast for me to notice that part.

Yeah, kind of weird how
little he's done. But I suppose it'll matter for the direction that Musashi itself takes; Motonobu is basically throwing away Mikawa and the Far East themselves by launching this attack. Since Mikawa was the representative of the Far East, this attack vs the World, basically, will at the very least strip that status of them and it'll probably go to Musashi (if only because I only know two locations in all of the Far East :/).
Yeah, that I understood.
Also, as I said, it sets things up for that girl to join the main group, given that she said those soldiers will be standing neutral, and not helping her father's side's army of robot maids.

And that ghost is the one thing I don't get at all.
It's a ghost, pretty simple... :) They were looking for ghosts, and found one!

... Maybe there will be more of an explanation next time. We'll see.

No,
Tadakatsu is the Spear wielding old man ("Da-chan") that is shown at the end of the episode. He's the only Heavenly King participating in the fight (Ii is missing somewhere, Sakakibara was spirited away, and Sakai isn't part of the Genesis Plan). Muneshige and Gin are the two Tres Espana members (color-coded for your convenience, they're in red). They are essentially bodyguards of the Testament Union; they're reinforcements for the fight and with Tadakatsu standing directly in their way.
Ah.
Motonobu isn't one of the "four generals" guys then? I didn't know that, I thought (by process of elimination) he was probably the fourth one. They never introduced any of these characters, really... so the fourth one is some guy they haven't mentioned yet, apart from that he's not there. As for the villains, I didn't remember their names, but yes, given the completely different costumes and the different color scheme, it is easy to tell them apart at least. :)

Also, yeah, I thought the idea was for those four to be the core of the plan, so as I said I was confused when one of them apparently knew nothing about it. I guess Motonobu didn't think he'd go along with it, or didn't think he was trustworthy, or something.

Oh, and on the note of Motonobu, at least this plot does give an explanation for why he expelled all of his retainers in favor of robots... he was planning this action all along.

They basically just seem to like to stick explanations whenever they have exposition. If people are talking then its almost always relevant to something sometime somehow. It's kind of getting pretty heavy and thick. I wonder how much novel progress we've made? Hopefully we're a decent amount in just to explain the sheer amount of stuff crammed into us.
It seems so, but it's all so confusingly arranged that it often doesn't make sense until you watch the episode multiple times, AND read background material about both the series and the historical periods too -- some of which I have done, but not enough clearly.

Think it's about the scene in question being uploaded finally (
Kazuno vs mecha
).
Ah.

It's too absurd to be serious, yeah. But that didn't stop a part of me, after episode 1, that wondered if it was intended to be that absurd of it the author really likes himself some goddamn bentos. The more I watch, the less I can ever possibly think that, though. Very clear it is absurd by design, otherwise this creator has way more awesome happen to him when he buys dinner than I'll ever know in my life.

Still, I'm liking Ben-To as this silly, over-the-top shounen action harem with a ridiculous premise to drive the plot. It works well.
What? Sure, the author probably does like bentos... just not quite as much as the characters in the story. :)

And yeah, for me, it's the ridiculous premise that makes the over-the-top nature of the shonen work. If it was more serious, I'd likely not be watching.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Ben-to is good, with potential for greatness.
Fate/Zero is also good, with room for improvement.

Phi Brain 4

Puzzle wasn't bad. Definitely not the worst one. Getting some insight on Kaito's past and personality is also welcome. Hope his reason for loving
(hating?)
puzzles is revealed through some tragic flashback with a ridiculous tone shift.

Nice to see a P.O.G. member that isn't a total asshole.

Bartender 2

This was a nice story about a reconciliation between a father and son with a nice little twist. Its quite remarkable how much this show is able to tug at emotions with so little. It has very little actual animation but its use of imagery, music, ect. really get you invested in these vignettes of people's lives.

Bleach 342

I'm going to do a double take on this one. I was fucking around in that first post, but I have to say; this ep was extremely well done. I would have had no qualms were the series just to end on this exact note, left over story threads and all. I'm almost mad the series continues past this. It undermines everything. Fuck.

Also Kinect + Hulu is the 'master race' way to go about watching anime, I'm not even kidding. Take in all that irony. It's fucking amazing.

Well, technically the match doesn't start for another eight hours but whatever, the poster was up and ready.

Also, the voting rules, if you're crazy enough to actually want to have anything to do with this.

Hartmann looks likeable although (or for this reason) she is a Nazi.

Fate/Zero has fairly occultish stuff. The first episode is a bit of a chore but if you make it through that it's fun.
