Well you keep on using it then. :)

I'm just trying to defuse the unwarranted hate. Poor ol JPEG gets a bum rap because websites like to take a steamer all over their quality.

I was messing around with blooms SweetFx in Dolphin recently for Wind Waker and forgot I had it on while checking out SMG. I kind of like the look of it compared to vanilla. It add's a nice little touch.

The sky got a reaaaaal weird zipper like pattern in it as a result though!

Preaching to the wrong guy, I know full well both sides of the coin. I just feel more comfortable using .PNG when going over multiple pieces of software. Then you are always sure of the output. Unlike JPEG which you don't have control over in some cases.

I don't trust JPGs from photoshop. A 100% JPG from FastStone with no subsampling has never done me wrong. Though they are very close in size to a compressed PNG with Paeth. Here is a random Crysis 3 screenshot I'll use as an example:

JPG - 100% quality with no color subsampling - 3,235 KB
10320057616_cd7aaacd78_o.jpg

PNG - Max compression w/ Paeth Filter - 3,775 KB
10320058016_46525b9677_o.png

The biggest benefit to using JPG is actually how much faster my originals convert. PNGs take about 3x as long to run a typical batch operation.

More GTA 4 downsampled from 4K with simple ENB. Does it look like there's SMAA in these shots? I had sweetfx on but I'm still seeing jaggies.

As many have discovered, 4K in GTA4 (as well as a few other games) isn't enough to remove all aliasing. SMAA is also pretty meh at 1x, so it won't be your savior. There are a few ways to grab screens at resolutions higher than 4K though.

Goddamn DmC looks so good. Just waiting for the PS4 controller to play it.

hmm I may have to check out SoftTH. I tried my best to get SRWE to work with GTA 4 but it would not use the resolution in the commandline.txt no matter what I did. My gtx470 with 1.2gb of vram is struggling enough as it is though at 4K so I don't even know if it's worth it.

Nice to see some more genuine gameplay shots for once =)

Hey my RE: Revelations shots were genuine but they had shitty textures that made them repulsive apparently :(

2 real. 2 genuine.

Speaking of gameplay though, I'd love to see more 4K+ shots of Grid 2 Sethos. I finally got my hands on a friends copy with the Steam Family sharing and some of these later tracks are ridiculously good looking.

They were and kudos for that - I liked them. Just browsing a few pages and you hit the same page up and page down of artsy-fartsy stuff ( Not saying I'm that much better, mind you ). Miss the good ole' days of more genuine shots and where you saw a lot of different people posting. Now it just feels like the same 3. When someone finally posts something different or something that doesn't have 4k textures, it will be shunned. Having your HUD, the weapon or anything in the shot is now a taboo. You don't feel like you are looking at game screenshots any more.

Eh I'm just getting bitter.

EDIT: I might look into it. Have nothing to do until BF4.

First time trying this 3:4 ratio...be gentle. =)

I like them all a lot.

I would love more variety for sure. I don't have any fun taking regular gameplay shots with HUD and all, but I do like to see them for general impressions. Though when it comes to getting a genuine gameplay experience, I much prefer videos. But it's also a lot harder to do good videos. I've tried the recording thing a few times and it usually ends up being terrible

You'd think more people would be posting, what with GAF being so large and all. Perhaps we just need some new games.

Of course that wasn't an attempt to put words into my mouth or try for some kind of character assassination as I never said I didn't like your screenshots. I merely heckled the producer's lack of dedication to their game ip what with all the shitty textures for a game repurposed for PC.

And no, there's nothing wrong with 'pure gameplay' shots. BUT, to me, the push for innovative shots is something that got me interested in this thread in the first place. If I want gameplay shots, there are so many other places to go, and yeah, I'd take a good video over a gameplay shot if I'm interested in gameplay in the first place. This is not to say that a gameplay shot can't be interesting, novel, or good, but most just aren't (to me). Frankly, most gameplay shots offer little that actual gameplay doesn't, and they get boring real fast.

But apparently so does all the artsy-fartsy stuff (which is - I must say - a very amicable way to paint your fellow thread users' pursuits, Sethos).

I guess I just want to say that I wouldn't mind gameplay shots, if they've got something to bring to the table, but by all means keep astounding me with well chosen angles, great shader work, novel approaches, and what have you. Don't go full-on mediocre and think resolution is everything.

All bitching aside, those are some alluring portraits, One3rd. Do more.

Finally got through that stupid Nazi camp, so my playthrough continues. Crappy gunplay, but the atmosphere is top notch. Not the best IQ, but as usual only 60fps shots.

The problem isn't what you are posting. You have every right to post whatever you like, however over the past year or so a worrying trend in my opinion has begun which made me enjoy this thread / screenshotting on NeoGAF in general, much less. It's becoming this little smoking lounge for connoisseurs, where a select handful of people have become judge and jury with a healthy dose of circle jerking.

My love started to wither some months ago during a Skyrim episode. Posted some Skyrim shots I personally was fond of and got a lot of positive feedback when a little voice at the back of the room uttered "I don't see what's so special about those shots" - A voice from one of the very active people in this thread. Who kind of butthurt thing is that to say? Then I noticed that on a few occasions with some games, "Oh I don't see what's so special about that" - Got especially bad when people were positive about those very shots.

Even have the exact same example on the last page. Ever since that first episode where I started noticing it, I've seen this nonchalant attitude in the thread like "That's not good enough for my taste, good sir - Look at my pictures". People seemed to just slowly migrate out of the thread and purely anecdotal, I have a friend friends and a GAF friend that was active in here ( One posting, rest browsing ) and one of those actually said the exact same thing to me not very long ago.

Seems more like people have no interest in posting. I can't blame anyone in here for that, as that's their own prerogative but I'm just venting. When the old guard finally decides to post in here, there's just complaints about texture work or the games aren't special enough.

I know I'm not making any friends here but I really needed to vent, especially from that last page.

You're just misinterpreting a personal gripe of mine with Skyrim shots in general. But yeah, I was probably being a jackass. There wasn't anything wrong with your shots. They were good. They were clean. The ENB was solid. But it's like ANY time someone posts Skyrim in this thread. Or any thread. Anywhere on the internet. Everyone goes crazy and an explosion of "what mods how i do that" goes off.

You have just as much right to post Skyrim as I do my supersampled artsy fartsy shots. And I should probably keep my mouth shut when and strive to be a more positive person in general, but sometimes I need to gripe too. And sadly, that gripe was at the expense of you. I didn't know you were harboring ill feelings about that all this time.

I don't really want anyone to pay special attention to my shots at all. It's just a silly hobby. My most recent post regarding Skyrim may have come off wrong. My only point was that folks were commenting that 1440p shots of Skyrim would melt their GPUs, but not 8K shots of ANY game that's posted on pretty much EVERY page of this thread lately. Because it was SKYRIM.

And there. That is the last time I will ever rant or gripe about Skyrim. Or any screenshots. Doens't mean I won't comment about GAMES in shots, but I really don't want anyone to feel discouraged from posting. Ugh.

I've also been critiqued by multiple people in this thread, both in public and in PMs. I was once told to stop screenshotting Borderlands 2 and move onto another game, even though I really like Borderlands 2. That sorta thing just sticks with me, and should probably realize it sticks with other people when I do similar things.

First off, I'd like to make it clear that I'm much less riled up than my post suggests. I think you've seen me post a few times, I always come off as an old grumpy-ass man. You have every right to gripe and we've all done it, whether it's someone posting shots that have more jaggies than exploded glass or some 87 year old game where you have no clue what's going on because they decided to take a picture during a high-score-exploding-star-what-the-fuck-is-that-a-snake screen.

And the Skyrim thing was more of a straw on the camel's back rather than the primary reason. Think it was more the source of ignition for me to go stinky eyes towards you, perhaps misinterpret your intentions in the thread and the atmosphere of the thread as you are the most active post in here.

I often see a slightly condescending attitude towards people outside of the A-team, I often see this "Yeah that shot is okay but this shot is really good <Links to some random Flickr page>". Again, I'm probably misinterpreting the intention completely but everything I just see as malicious rather than harmless - Which is my character flaw. It was just the Skyrim comments and other comments towards certain games that made it seem like that atmosphere of respect was on its way out and this was becoming the "Art thread", everything else was meh.

I have all the respect in the world for the artsy-fartsy shots ( Yeah, that word is a thing now ) and a lot of them are really impressive, not my cup of tea but I just keep my mouth shut but now it just became part of my rant.

So I just lost my interest as a lot of the 'usual suspects' appear to have stopped posting or barely post any more, I just glance over a lot of shots and can hardly discern who is posting them because the style is so similar and without a name to them, I would have no clue. Also the reason why it was a kind-of relief seeing something more ... 'genuine' ( Seems like the wrong word ), where it's just a game screenshot - Something we had tons of back in the day but with everybody gone, the style of shots have narrowed significantly.

Just clearing the air, I meant no harm but my very nature makes me sound angry and bitter.

I do like to give tips when it seems like someone is requesting them. And just in case there was any confusion, the last time I linked to a Flickr post (Nic Clappers) was to demonstrate 1 such method of achieving higher-than-4K screenshots in GTA IV, not to say "this is better than yours so go look at this"). Not that Darkdeus is in any danger of people thinking his shots are anything less than awesome.

I'm probably guilty of nitpicking a few screenshots... but generally I don't try to. In any case, I'd like people to start wrapping anyone alongside the head for talking down screenshots for any reason. Especially if it's me.

In any case neoenigma, no hard feelings? Let's just get back to posting =)

Of course not.

And Grid 2 is a pretty game. I really enjoyed the first one. Probably the only other racing game I've played on PC other than Most Wanted. The rewind feature is great for the casual racing fan in me.

I wish Dead Space 3 could give me an exact number for the FOV. Mine is set to 80% of the default.

Still think it's a terrible game though. Just killing time until Battlefield 4....

Thought I'd stop the moaning myself and add some horribly textured, blurred to hell, oversaturated, bloomy Fallout:

Those Star Citizen reflections are quite promising, even if the Hangar module runs like optimization wasn't on the devs thoughts just now. I hope they find a way to make it go a bit smoother in the release, because even if it's quite a long while away, I don't want to have to run a double titan setup to pull this off smoothly. (Not that I'd mind an upgrade at around the time of SC's release.)

Lost Planet 3:

I feel like I haven't seen enough talk about this game. It looks pretty awesome on PC, and I'm enjoying the game so far. I have to admit, I had my serious doubts when it was first announced with Spark as the developer, but this game looks awesome while playing it.
