Any ballers here or anyone with great knowledge on basketball shoes? I'm in an inter mural league for my college. I usually play in running shoes, I prefer low tops and it's much more comfortable and I feel I can fly around the court much more fluidly despite all the safety hazards. But I play in them usually in just pick up ball which are obviously much shorter games than the 20 min halves we're playing which is why I'm not using them. I just bought some bball shoes though and have played in them for my first couple of games. I feel sluggish in them moving around on the court. They're high tops too so I fucked up there too since I hate high tops. Feel like my ankles are cemented into the shoe.
So any good basketball shoes anyone can recommend that are light and low tops? Kobe zooms maybe? Not that it matters but my left foot is 3/4 of an inch bigger than my right foot.
Anything Kobe will give you a close to the ground feel and low cut at the expense of less cushioning. Note that Venomenons are the "outdoor" version of Kobe's line that have a tougher rubber and different grip pattern. You can still use them indoors of course. Also note that Kobes generally run narrow, especially around the toebox. You might actually appreciate that as you have to go half size up for your larger left foot, which will at least keep the smaller right one snug.
A lot of newer shoes are high cut only on the sides. A now year old shoe like the Lebron XI has high wings on the ankle but the back/achilles is cutout to feel like a low/mid cut. Very few guys actually play in their Lebrons but the few that do (like me) will initially find it very high off the ground but once that midsole/cushion insert gets broken in and flattened a little your feet will be very close to the ground. Try pulling out the insole at a store and you'll see exactly what I mean. With the new XII just out you can find great deals on the XI, with the least popular colorways hitting $60.
Zoom Crusaders, and Zoom Run the ones are good options explicitly designed for low cut, high court feel. If you don't mind a midcut (that looks high) with great cushioning try the Jordan Super Fly 2 or 3 (2 for cheap, 3 for $$) that are basically the poor man's Jordan XX8, because they have an arguably better flight plate that the XX8 introduced but with cheaper (and actually more durable) upper materials. Super Fly 2's released at $120 new, but can be had around $60 or less at outlets.
Hyperdunks are great but low cuts are extremely rare as you'd basically have to find a model from 2 years ago. Recent Hyper* models are only high cut (but feel more like mids, especially if you don't lace up all the way).
I used to play exclusively in mid and low cut shoes, being short and playing point most my life. Now at 32 with plantar fasciitis (due to being flatfooted, bowlegged, and heelstriking), I've had to change my shoe choices completely. Now I find that with my wide feet and need for maximum support and cushioning I can only play in Lebron's and Jordan's line.
Good luck finding great shoes, as taking care of your feet is very important if you want to keep playing at a decent level until your later years. Wear both shoes when trying them on and do some jumping jacks, hops, pivots, etc in them even if people might stare.
