343 addresses ongoing Halo MCC Matchmaking issues

Open letter from 343i head Bonnie Ross.

On Nov 11th we released Halo: The Master Chief Collection. The goal being to create a tribute to Halo fans around the world, and to celebrate the Master Chief’s debut on Xbox One. With the initial release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, however, we have not delivered the experience you deserve. I personally apologize for this on behalf of us all at 343 Industries. Our team is committed to working around the clock until these issues are resolved.

While our team works on continual improvements and towards solutions, my commitment to you is that we will take care of all owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Our primary and continued focus is first on fixing the issues at hand. Once we’ve done that, we will detail how we will make this right with our fans.

On the matchmaking front, we have encountered unexpected issues that were not apparent in our internal test environment and that have resulted in a frustrating experience, including long matchmaking times and low session success rates. Within 343 Industries and Xbox, I can assure you that resolving these issues is our #1 priority. We continue to partner with the Xbox platform team to analyze all data to make ongoing server-side adjustments to continually improve the matchmaking experience. We are also preparing additional content updates that will address existing campaign, UI, and other issues to improve the overall experience. With each update we will carefully analyze data to confirm that the improvements we’re seeing internally are also happening with fans at home.

Know that we’re trying to be as nimble as possible to put fixes in place. We are planning multiple server-side tweaks and game content updates over the coming weeks. Looking forward, I want to give you a high-level cadence of the latest updates we’re currently working on. Development and testing of our latest content update continues and we are on track for release later this week. We will update you on the status and patch notes of the content update once we have a better understanding of our release window. Only through making changes on both the “server side” (matchmaking and other server rulesets) and, via content updates (to the game itself), can we make the significant progress we’re working towards. And in the interest of expediency, we’re attacking the problem from both sides, non-stop.

As we have been, we will continue to post the details of our updates and other adjustments on Halo Waypoint. Please check our forums at http://aka.ms/mcc_updates for the latest details as we roll out further fixes.

Please accept my heartfelt apologies for the delay and for the negative aspects of your experience to date. We’re doing everything in our power to resolve it as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Ross – Studio Head, 343 Industries

So how is it that Bungie was able to make it work so well out of the gate for an arguably much larger install base for Halo games? I'm guessing 343's resources are incredibly limited compared to the former's.

I appreciate the constant updates about the issues and 343's commitment to fixing them, but damn what a mess of a launch.

Lotta outsourcing, someone fucked up somewhere down the line.

I wonder how they'll "make it right" Free DLC? Discount on Halo 5?

My bets are

1) Early access to H5 beta and extended play time
2) New DLC maps for H2A.

Was waiting for the "over the coming weeks"...sure enough, those exact words. Probably aren't going to be able to do crap until week after thanks giving at the very earliest I bet.

I hope after all this that they'll learn how to make Halo 5 rock solid on day one.

Interesting.

Back to playing Smash 4. I'll give 343 as long as they need to make this game a smooth grooving machine. As long as they need; seeing as how this might very well be my last Halo-related purchase ever.

Its all bullshit until they give us something good in return. They released a broken game knowingly. I don't give a shit if they're sorry. I give a shit when they give us extra content or a partial refund as an apology.

How was the product released to begin with. It's a joke that i've spent £45 only to have to wait what we most likely be over a month before I can really enjoy it.

After this and Driveclub I'm never downloading or pre-ordering a retail release again.

I already traded it in, refund me the remaining $20 I lost and we can call it good. Also, you've shattered my confidence in Halo 5.

uhhh.. yeah. entitlement. we bought the game. it doesn't work. that's.. yeah that's something we're entitled to.

I'm not saying we can't bitch and moan about it, though. Believe me I am not happy about it. It's just not worth the freakout or even a refund to me.

Maybe I'm just numb to bad game launches which is a whole other issue entirely

should have delayed the release, sorry but it's true and my thoughts on how 343 and MS handle their top franchises dropped down a few pegs, again.

They need to get this fixed pronto, this was their proof that they are faithful to the Halo franchise and a worthy successor to Bungie. I'm hoping people learn from this and take 3 or 4 days off of Halo 5 gauge how it's going before they hop in.

This is so depressing. This collection should have been such a positive thing for Halo. I mean it is awesome and wonderful when functioning, but this amount brokenness is so unacceptable. "The coming weeks" is the worst part. This should have been fully fixed within the first week. :(

Have they acknowledged the campaign issues? Like losing save progress? That is as much a priority as matchmaking, but their statements only focus on the PvP side.

They better make this up for us. I want the Halo 5 beta to last longer, I want no ADS/sprint, I want all Halo 5 DLCs to be free.

just fix the game 343

So basically the same shit we got last week then. Also, I would like for them to answer why they released the game with all of the campaign and UI bugs. There is NO WAY that they didn't know of them before release.
At least they're working on it. Not much else you can ask at this point. Something something entitlement
At this point, I'm convinced you're trolling. Either that or there is something seriously wrong with you.

I think MS also needs to give a month or two of free Xbox Live Gold (depending on how long it takes to fix these issues) to help make things right. Some people might have gotten Gold primarily to play this game online and the months not playing it, are months where Gold is being wasted.

it was never going to happen fast. You don't go through millions of lines of code, understand, diagnose, fix and test bugs over night. That's just not how reality works.

I would expect things more playable in a couple of weeks, and maybe most things stabilized by the end of January. I think that's most realistic. We can only hope it doesn't turn out like Battlefield 4 where we were into the Spring hoping for launch bugs to be squashed.

It sounds like they are starting from scratch if this is something they're planning over the next few weeks. Bummer.

Holy shit this is a hot mess. I can appreciate them being out there like this and it's a nice gesture, but their phrasing makes it sound like this is going to be a problem for quite a while, which is really really bad. I'm really curious how this will effect the playerbase longterm. Everyone always kinda laughs and pulls out the chart showing the Halo 4 playerbase numbers dropping quickly over time, but this was their chance to do right and they fucked it up, it's a real bad look for them. Once again I am so so glad I didn't have the money at the last minute to get an Xbox One for this like I had originally planned. I would be livid if I had bought a console for this, I feel super bad for all the folks I've seen post who did get one for this game and are super bummed out/pissed.

I'd expect an extended Halo 5 beta at the VERY least for this....although if this is still broken as hell when that was supposed to hit I wonder if that'll get pushed back?

I feel bad for all the Halo fans. This should have been so positive for the franchise. But it has turned out to be a nightmare. I bet this will temper a lot of people's expectations for Halo 5 after this debacle.
