3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Do we have any vids of the XL playing GBA games? I'm sill debating wether to transfer the ambassador stuff to the XL, or just keep it on the normal 3DS. All depends on picture quality really.
1:1 mode for GBA will be almost the exact same size as a GBA / SP screen, going by PPI.

Just imagine that screen around a big black bar. ;)

- The added size makes it impossible to play Kid Icarus comfortably. My hand ached like hell afterwards :(

Was this more of an issue of holding the system with one hand? I'd imagine with Kid Icarus you could make the stylus input more sensitive to compensate for the size, but that wouldn't help with finding a comfortable position to hold the system.

Does anyone have any impressions of the 3DS XL playing DS games in full screen mode? I'm so close to pre-ordering a blue model but if it doesn't look good I'm buying a DSI XL instead. The majority of my 3DS gaming is with DS games (although I know it'll change once a 3DS Pokemon game comes out). Having bars around the screen really bothers me just like playing PSP games on a TV bothers me. With the current 3DS, playing DS games doesn't look too bad. I could see how having larger screens could make it look really bad though..

I'll likely be picking one up once it's released in the US, although I really wish there was a white option. It'll be my first Nintendo hand-held since my long-lost fat, red DS. As such I'll be getting red version to fill the void.

Very good read. Thanks for posting.

No problem, thanks for reading!

My biggest question, no one has seemed to answer: aside from added lock positioning, is the hinge floppy/wiggly when locked? Or is it stiff/sturdy? A big gripe with the 3DS current, is even when locked, you feel it shifting during gameplay....

As others have said, the 3DS XL's hinge does not flop or wiggle when locked -- that is a huge improvement over the current 3DS. I apologize for not answering that question in my write-up; I'll definitely amend my article to include that point, as it's an important one.

Has anyone confirmed if the XL's 3D sweet spot is really wider, or does it still lose focus if shifted the tiniest bit?

"The tiniest bit" is a bit strong, but I honestly didn't experience a wider sweet spot. I had a play on one today. Mario Kart is fucking amazing on this thing.

On show at Yodobashi stores here in Japan

tried it - i went in with the "i am NOT getting an XL" as i already invested in "skin" battery options etc for the 3DS

however - i quickly about-faced after playing one. I was sceptical that the bigger screen would not cause issues but in truth it's perfectly fine and i saw no resolution/3D issues at all.

the machine itself is thinner than i expected though it seemed to be strangely heavy to the back right (battery placement?) - but not in a significant manner.

I went from "no interest" to "must buy" #shrug

(i played Monster Hunter demo for reference - the 3D effect is pretty strong on 3ds and on 3dS xl it felt about the same)
Has anyone confirmed if the XL's 3D sweet spot is really wider, or does it still lose focus if shifted the tiniest bit?

actually this IS the one difference - it is -at best- as good as the 3DS but i felt that it was narrower :(
the idea people are saying it has a wider sweet spot? I'd say that's bullshit on the 3 times i tried it. Best case it's the same as it is now.

So here's a thought.

The nintendo 3ds released a while back, but for whatever reason, the general population wasn't particularly enamoured with it, a combination of a lot of factors, but price was a big one. I know I didn't get one due to timing in my life, hardware design, and price.

We also know, traditionally, Nintendo profits from hardware sales. However, as a reaction to slow sales, nintendo did the untraditional and announced a price drop pretty soon after launch. It worked and the 3ds had a turn around.

Now I don't know if they simply lowered profit margins, broke even, or sold them at a loss, but with the new 3ds xl coming at a lower price than the original 3ds, do you think they are still operatic at a loss or low profit? Or have they 'cheapened' the manufacturing (either component quality or standard drop in price as they get older and better production), and once again profiting on hardware?

That kind of sucks but I guess I'll deal with it.

why can't I order this on Amazon. I don't like going to the store

Apparently there's some bad blood between Nintendo and Amazon, but no one really knows where it originated.

But yeah, as an avid Amazon customer for all my gaming needs, this sucks for me too. Your next best bet will be to pre-order it from Newegg. At least they've got free shipping as well!

They are making a profit on them.

A side note, anyone know of or heard any rumors of upcoming bundles? I don't have a current 3ds so will need a few games to go along with the system.

I'm not sure why people think the sweet spot will change. They made the device bigger, they didn't adjust how your eyes function. The 3D may be more pronounced now due to the larger screens, but they can't alter the sweet spot in which your eyes can separate the images.

Interesting thanks.

So if the original 3ds is at a loss, and the new xl is at profit, I wonder if the 3dsxl is of cheaper quality or the price refelects the usual reduction in component costs over time, or no longer factoring in R&D or what.

In nz, we've been given an indication that 3dsxl may be similar price as 3DS. Not sure if it's a special, a guess or what.

I know that makers of auto-stereo televisions are working on reducing the out of focus zones between the sweet spots to close them.

Given that the screen here is so much larger physically, I had no idea if that affected the focus in the parallax barrier - not in your eyes.

I do think the red and blue are great looking (getting blue myself) but agree it is pointless to not have the silver in the US at launch. That is dumb.

I'll bite when a cosmo black XL arrives in the US. It's funny, I would never buy a red or blue one but I'd buy a limited edition, Mario themed XL if Nintendo put one out.

I think the silver is ugly, so no big loss there, but it's a missed opportunity to not offer Red, White, and Blue. In America.

yes yes yes yes YES

I love the blue but I love the white more. Why not release it here if it exists?!? I don't understand.

Oh well, good thing I'm not fond of that silver color or I'd be really pissed

Pretty sure I'm going to have to bite on a blue 3DS XL at launch. I'd rather have a white or silver one, but hey, what can you do. Blue is actually my favorite color, it's just that this particular hue looks a little too... Fisher Price-y to me with that finish.

I hope Amazon ends up coming through in time for launch, so I don't have to pay tax. If not, Newegg will have to suffice. Certainly not bothering with a brick-and-mortar store, though.

In most regions the XL will retail for more than the default 3DS. I'd say that's the largest factor in it being profitable from day 1.

Default 3DS is $169.99 here in the US, XL will retail at $199.99

So I played with on of the XLs yesterday at the Bic Camera.
Its pretty nice.

-Feels good to hold
-Nice and solid with good weight
-The screen is nice and big
-Its true the 3D is easier to see
-The large screen looks like crap with the low resolution. Too bad.

Have you seen pictures of the blue in normal photos? I think it looks nice.

The 3DS XL seems to be an upgrade in almost every way. I'd definitely buy one if I had extra money. As it stands, my original 3DS serves its function sufficiently. The sturdy screen, rounder form factor, and actual Home buttons remain very attractive, though.

Is free that the blue is really nice. I pre-ordered the red, then as pictures of both began to surface, I quickly switched to blue. The red looks like a mix of loud + dull. I find the blue looks sleek and classy.

Additional bonus, It matches the blue led on the front ^_^

I want Amazon to carry it at launch too (themselves, and not from 3rd parties overcharging for it), but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. My guess is Nintendo is pissed off at them after Amazon made a bit of a to-do over the failed 3DS screen scratching situation so they didn't just pull the 3DS from Amazon, but every other handheld they make as well. I see no logical business reason why Amazon would choose to not carry any Nintendo handheld. It's just a guess, but I'd wager this is a case of Nintendo of America being petulant little pricks because a retailer dared to complain publicly.

Waiting out for a special edition.

I can wait til about early December, but then I hope I will be traveling all over the country, so I'll definitely want one by then. I just don't know if I can bring myself to buy those horrendous colors.

ugh...

I could probably live with the silver one.. but it reminds me of my terrible laptop from the early 2000s. Boring.. dull.. bleh.

Bring this one to the US!
