5 Things I Learned as the Internet's Most Hated Person

can't believe we still have people still claiming the "it's about journalistic integrity!" angle when the ire is directed a small indie games instead of advertising-campaigns-as-reviews you get for multi-million dollar AAA game devs...

it's kind of the opposite of the "any publicity is good publicity" idea.

is it kind of or wholly opposite? if its kind of opposite, then imagine for a second that both concepts aren't mutually exclusive, and focus on the aspect of the snowball effect of public controversy. I really want you to understand where I'm coming from. Forget the whole idea of bad or good publicity... lets focus on just the "publicity" aspect. lets pretend that the streisand effect is this model: P= X+(-C). now C is the publicity. X is the fact that you are talking about it. now lets move on to the "any publicity is good publicity" model. P= X + l(-C)l notice how both models are similar?

I don't mind gay people at all. Some people think i hate gay people and i apologize if i made it seem that way. I'm the kind of guy that doesn't give a shit about what they do as long as they're happy...My video games on the other hand.
Calling the mere existence of gay people political only makes them political. If you were fine with their existence, it would be a total nonissue, so the protest of it says that you have an issue with them being presented as existing at all. So if that's not your issue, then can you name anything else about Bioware games that are "too political?"

Come on, please think that through. You're saying you're completely fine with gays, but then you say "I don't wanna see them in my video games". Please, really think about that. What is wrong with equal (equal not meaning it has to be 50-50) representation of sexuality?

edit:
It's also not "having to put" them in the games for the people who create gay characters. It's simply about equality for them.

She's the one who's saying she wants to move on past all this. If there's one thing I've learned from every scandal that's ever happened, it's that the best way to get people to stop talking about it is to either resolve it, or ignore it entirely. In this case, the actual "scandal" is mostly farcical in nature and thus cannot be resolved, so it sounds like the best possible option here is to ignore it entirely.

the scandal is the ridiculous over reaction to the accusations of her ex boyfriend. and we don't make problems like misogyny go away by not talking about them.

"Editor's Note: If you found this article from another message board and are about to leave a comment that boils down to, "I don't condone the harassment, but let me explain why she deserved it!" please just take a deep breath, step away from your computer, and call your mother. Tell her you love her. Call a friend and ask if they need anything. Go outside, gaze up into the sky, take a deep breath, and really appreciate the fact that you're alive and that you should make the most of it. Thank you."

Valuable advice, to those frail enough to think you can fuck your way through an industry.

Just some opinions on the subject.

  • Both sides of this argument are ruined by the extremists.
  • I don't think journalists or bloggers should be paying the artists they cover via patreon.
  • I think Zoe Quinn is playing the victim to a sickening degree. Faking DDOS attacks and all that nonsense. Even look at this clickbait article.
  • People sending death threats is always wrong and pathetic but that's just the stupidity of the internet that exists today.
  • Game journalists stating that all gamers are white males. That is just plain extremist social justice warrior bullshit. It was really nice seeing Twitter fight back against this ridiculous label.
Yep. Sums up everything I was about to say

Metal Gear Solid was a franchise i played before i had this political hatred.

This is golden!

You must just fume with resentment having to see your forum name and avatar on every one of your posts these days.

And man, you're going to be missing out on The Phantom Pain... but stay strong, brother! Stick to your convictions!

They have to?
Seem like it's okay?

You obviously have an issue with gay people. You're okay with them existing as long as you're not exposed to them.

I don't have a problem with gay people. lol.

I'll be buying it on PC :P.

wtf... are you serious? what high horse are you riding that tells you its embarrassing to call someone out on their narcissistic view?

granted its for comedy purposes, and granted she is a victim of internet harassment, but who the hell are you to judge people's point of views? what if i feel the title of the article undermines the real harassment that a lot of people face on the internet? what then? am i still an "embarrassment"?

geez, some of you have no chill in you.

Wait, what? Having people call your dad and call you a whore is not real harassment? Having people steal your friend's social security number and info needed to steal their ID and posting it on the internet is not real harassment? Posing nude pictures without her permission all over the internet is not real harassment? Trying to create a whole scandal and get everyone hating her is not real harassment? Death threats are not real harassment? Putting in date of death (we hope) is not real harassment (basically wishing for her death)?

Please... what is real harassment? Is this kind of like real rape?

Interesting article. I think the take away is not what specifically happened, but what does happen as a part of internet troll culture, especially when it's focused on one person. It's a horrible situation for anyone to be in.

No. It's the fact that they have to put them in there to make it seem like its ok. I already know its okay.

I don't think that's their agenda. A big part of Bioware's games are the relationships, it's normal for relationships to span a variety of sexual preferences. If anything they're just trying to make their game more realistic. Which is what people ask for. Not some secret lefty socialist conspiracy.

That's besides the point, though. Media is one of the best indicator of whether or not something is accepted in society. Sixty years ago, I Love Lucy stood out for starring a (debatably) interracial couple and for having an episode revolving around a pregnancy. Nowadays, no one bats an eye at either of those things.

If homosexual relationships are okay, there's no reason why they shouldn't be more represented in the media.

Yep. Sums up everything I was about to say

Since he's gone and you're here, I'll ask you. Just how do I get myself on that list of 'SJW enemies who must not be trusted'? I want on. And I want to encourage everyone else to get on that list too, because I want to see it grow and grow and grow and grow to the point it's completely unmanageable.

I think i just hate Bioware period. They're just a shit tier developer to me now. I like Dragon Age Origins but when i saw poop mountain i was like NOPE.

Isn't Depression Quest free? I don't know how she's supposed to profit according to that theory. Are there ads in this game?

They're not doing it to make a point. They're doing it because they have a rather large gay fan base, and are appealing to it.

It's not even that. It's just that there are gay people, and so it would make sense for there to be gay characters in their game. And not token gay characters... but characters that happen to be gay.

Ignoring all of the bullshit surrou ding the matter, this is an article that is well worth reading. The internet does seem to throw around spitefulness that is no way proportiate to the subject matters.

So... Any publicity is publicity? Gee, I guess I can't argue with that.

Read the article before I commented.

It was pretty much what I figured it would be.

"Men are evil. Gamers are evil. Nothing I did was shady or suspect."
Please, point out where she says that.

I didn't see any of that. She talks about angry mob sure, but she doesn't blame all gamers at all, nor all men.

I love Metal Gear solid. Just games that aren't ridiculous in their depiction.

I was going to say that there's a place for serious games and all that but when I look at the games I play and like....
They usually involve magic wizard from outerspace killing demonic dragon from the underworld with a pogo stick...

I think i just hate Bioware period. They're just a shit tier developer to me now. I like Dragon Age Origins but when i saw poop mountain i was like NOPE.

That also have nothing to do with gay people, like at all....unless...

I can't really say i do.

Huh, I'm confused. If you don't mind gay people in real life (presumably you would treat a gay person the same way you would a stright person) then surely the issue would be relationships in games, period? Games forcing straightness on you would be just as bad as games forcing gayness on you, yeah?

Either a bunch of you love to ignore context or have reading comprehension deficiencies. where on earth did i say its narcissistic to feel hated?

"what high horse are you riding that tells you its embarrassing to call someone out on their narcissistic view?"

The "view" in this case is feeling hated.

I guess it's just me being a grump and they're putting something in a game to make a point that i'm already okay with.
I think if you were totally okay with it, you'd recognize games aren't made just for you and you wouldn't have brought it up in the first place. Appealing to Not-You is not the same as being political.

Would you agree that the devs leaving out gay options is at least as political a statement as if they include that option? Like, forget ideas (silly ones) like which would be "more political." Both decisions on the part of the dev are political decisions, right? Or do you not agree with that?

You're misunderstanding me. None of its bad. I just don't dislike real life problems in my games. I play them to get away from that stuff. It's a hobby.

Games are art. It's fine if you prefer games whose content is mostly apolitical, but that doesn't mean politics and social issues have no place in the medium or criticism of it.

No. It's just not there. I can't say i agree or disagree. It just wasn't planned to be in there at at all : ).
