Is it OK if I talk NGEva here for a bit? I'll spoiler tag it just in case so...
First off, I'm not the biggest robot guy out there so really I don't really go crazy for the battles. For me the main draw has been the characters. Besides, even though the Angels are supposed to destroy the human race I don't really get exactly why that is happening but I take it that will be explained. Like yes they have been here before, now they are back again.
The regular weapons that the army uses are no match for them so these special Evas are the only thing that can stop them and literally save the human race. It just doesn't seem that dramatic. Like we kind of expect the Evas to obviously win though as I understand it if the main character would have faltered they would have pretty much nothing to fall back on (in the first episode). Perhaps the tone doesn't fit the seriousness of the implications in my mind. To compare it to another huge anime series, Cowboy Bebop, there many episodes that are kinda chill but when things get very serious the tone fits. It is dramatic and all the characters understand that this is life or death and emotions are truly expressed through words, eyes, and action. in NGE I haven't really gotten the sense of this life or death expression. Though the scene where Rei is saved by the main character's father is one that felt very good emotionally.
I guess NGE feels more like Avengers than The Dark Knight emotionally in the sense of drama. Like oh boy here is just another Angel, go fight it kid even though you're still shaky as hell but it will work out I guess, in stead of, holy shit, an angel, this is it guys, either this kid saves us or we are all fucked in the next 10 minutes, everyone drop everything and glue your eyes to this fight, fuck the budget, fuck the jokes, life or death, now now now.
I just finished episode 9 where the German girl and the main character do the synchronized fight. I must say that was a cool scene. I'm ok with a little bit of theatrical flair. I just guess the weight of the battles is a little underwhelming so far. Other than the main character having a hard time adjusting I haven't felt enough drama for the reality that these characters are in. It's good. I'm enjoying the characters, the fan service is... more than I expected especially with these barely teen characters but whatever, I'm dying to know more about the main character and his relationship with his father, Misato is really the coolest.
