Swappable buttons!
Speaking of how is the Switch 2 button mapping options? I usually have to switch buttons around.

edit=also these 8bitdo controllers have the gooderest charging dock designs. So easy to put on the dock without fiddling.

Everything but the lighting. I wish they'd get Amiibo support and system wake on these things, though.
Agreed. I'm also hoping they update their software to let you bind one of the extra buttons to the new C button. Not sure if that's something that could be done on their end or if it's something Nintendo is restricting.

Really good. In fact, I was even able to remap the new "C" button to just be an extra home button, since I kept hitting it on the layout when I meant to push home. At first, I was planning on physically taking my controller apart to disconnect it, since I have no interest in their little chat thing, so I was pleasantly surprised they even let me functionally disable it completely.

The system has the option to remap buttons per-game, as well as have the remapping menu put in the "quick home" menu you get from holding down the home button.

The only downside (if you could even call it that) is that button remapping works on a per-controller basis. So, if you have multiple controllers (like joy cons and a pro controller, or a gamecube controller) then those have to be remapped separately. Not a huge deal, and some might even consider that a good thing.

I'm going to wait for someone to do the ole Contra test with the dpad before jumping in on this one. The tactile dpad on the Xbox ultimate is not up to snuff. Hopefully they revised the dpad on this one. If anyone buys this and actually uses the dpad (not just for menu navigation) let us know how its diagonals perform.

Looks pretty good otherwise (the option for AA batteries will be missed). The option to swap the physical button layout is awesome.

Does anyone know if an ultimate controller that can turn on the switch 2 is coming.

I like my switch 2 to be aroused.

for someone to actually release a true multiplatform controller.

I don't get why that's apparently such an issue tbh.

There's licensing fees and proprietary protocols to get a controller working on Xbox and PlayStation. The closest you're going to get at this point is to use an Xbox or DualSense controller with the 8bitdo USB Adapter 2, that will get you there with the least number of purchases (https://www.8bitdo.com/usb-wireless-adapter-2/)

I just bought my second pro 2 a few months ago. One of those sweet transparent ones. I'm glad there's no reason to upgrade to this.

ok sure, but there are plenty of unlicensed chinese controllers that clearly don't care about what first parties think. yet, even those have yet to make a true multiplatform controller.

it's weird

It's pretty obvious IMO

It's cost. Both Microsoft/Sony charge for licensing. How many wireless Xbox controllers do you know of? I can't think of a single one. How many 3rd party PS5 controllers are there? Very few. You have to pay extra for the proprietary Xbox wireless protocol, and I assume Sony just wants to much and prefers to have as few alternatives to Dualsense as possible.

You already have nobody making wireless Xbox controllers probably because of cost and then you gotta add PS on there as well if you want to reach everyone.

Then we haven't even reached Switch.

Does anyone have the 9bitDo Ultimate 2? Are they any good?
I bought it and returned it. I really liked it, but I already use a Elite Series 2 on PC and the ease of use of the Pro controller beat it on Switch (waking console and paddle assignments being on a per game + per user case and being as easy as holding the Home button down).

I have one and its fantastic value and quality for the cost. Its my main Switch 2 controller, and I occasionally use it on PC as well

Bluetooth or Wireless? Xbox Elite 2 is out of the question for me

Yeah, I kept the USB receiver in my PC and connected via bluetooth to Switch. The switching worked great. The only other problem I had is that despite liking the size overall I think the grips are too short so at first I felt like I didn't have a good grip on it but it got better over time.

If I didn't already have a Elite Series 2 that I use on Series X and PC (the quick switching on Xbox controllers between Xbox and bluetooth is amazing and I'm really glad that Sony said they are working on something similar) I would have kept the Pro 2 over the Switch Pro 2.

Yes, and yes.

My main gripe is that the Select/Start buttons are at the very top of the front plate, and the Square/Star buttons are in the ideal place for the Select/Start buttons. So I occasionally hit the wrong button whenever trying to hit Select or Start. It's annoying, but the controller itself works great. The Square/Star buttons are the only non-remappable buttons on the controller.

It comes with a charging dock, and battery life has not been an issue (I can go 8+ hours of gaming when my work day is slow).

The dongle connector just works, and when you remove the controller from the dock it automatically turns on and connects which is awesome, and it also automatically turns off when you dock it. The only questionable thing for me is that the wireless dongle only connects to a singular controller. This means that if you need multiple controllers for more than one person playing split screen, you will need to have multiple USB-C ports to connect them to. This can be alleviated with a hub, but it's still kind of annoying if you're playing with more than one controller on the same device. For a single controller on a single device, this is a non-issue.

I returned mine cause I did not like the ergonomics. It maybe fine if you touch elbows while playing.

That makes no sense. It is marginally smaller than the Xbox Series controllers. And I do mean marginally.

You can remap these with the ultimate 2 software.

It makes 100% sense if you hold the controller…

You should be able to tell just by looking at photos head on but the handles on the 8bitdo (every controller they make) are more vertical then something like the Xbox controller or DualShock/DualSense. This means that you have to adjust your wrist to actually hold the handles.

It's the same problem people have with stuff like the Switch and Steam Deck and the whole reason why the Satisfye grip for Switch is by far the best grip because it puts your hands at more of an angle.

Dreamcast had this same issue except they were vertical and then curved inward for some fucking reason.

Oh, you're talking about the angle of the handles. That actually does make more sense. violence violence , ignore my previous response to you. I agree that the more angular approach for the Xbox Series controllers is better than the less angular approach that 8BitDo took with this controller. Personally, the benefits of the controller outweigh this, but that's obviously going to be subjective. If you need your entire palm to fully contact the controller then this is an issue. I just hold the controller a bit looser and that works for me.

This is really my only gripe with 8bitdo controllers. I hated it so much I just ended up getting a DualSense that was modded with TMR sticks and a bigger battery capacity.

Tactile dpad will be nice. I think I got to mess with it an event a while back, but the design looks a little different. Felt a bit more "grippy" which I thought was weird at the time, hope it grows on me. All system support in one device is a great touch and I like the new dock design...not that it matters, purely ascetic

I need a new joypad for my Switch 2, already got the cheap (but brilliant) Ultimate 2C and I want something different this time and also with a bigger battery - shall I go for the Ultimate 2 (70 Eurodollars ) or the Pro 2 (50) ?
Both have a 1000 mAh battery if I'm nothing mistaken, but, besides that, what are the main differences ? Does the Pro2 have gyro ?

Thanks
