Got it working in Bluetooth mode for Steam but not in the Xbox app.
Steam, you have to put the controller in xinput mode by turning controller off, hold X button while powering it up.
Then go into Steam settings and enable Steam Input for generic controllers.
Bluetooth is an awful experience with the 8bitdo.
My DualSense and Series controllers works far better in Bluetooth mode.

I've put this controller in the not recommended pile for now. I don't like the sticks and It's too small.
I bought this because it had the TMR hall effect sticks. The sticks are more all or nothing and less analog.
I gave the controller to my Son. Maybe he can use it. But I suspect Fortnite players will HATE this controller.
It's no wonder Xbox and Playstation don't use hall effect. I no longer think it's to make more money.

Why Bluetooth and not the 2.4G mode?

Why Bluetooth and not the 2.4G mode?
So I can use it with my laptop. And to just try it out.
The 2.4Gdongle works just fine connection wise. All games worked with it. Steam, Xbox app, Ubiconnect. It worked.
But I don't understand why the bluetooth has so many issues. Duel Sense and Series controllers work just fine in bluetooth everywhere, I would think this would too. but no.

This is what gets me about these controllers. On paper they're amazing but then you're hamstrung by arbitrary limits. If I want to map something obscure like F18 to a controller button you shouldn't be stopping me. I wish Steam had some sort of API or other way manufacturers could hook into the controller by providing mapping info and letting us customise properly.

Are there controllers out there that are truly mappable in one software or another?

At this point I'm still holding out for a Steam Controller 2 because I know it will be supported by what I think is the strongest mapping software out there.

It's a hardware issue, software won't be able to fix it. You can sort of get around it on some controllers, if they let you map double taps or combined inputs to the back buttons. Map it to something obscure like double click left stick or simultaneous up+down on d-pad, then in Steam map that to a keyboard key.

Some controllers are built with independent back buttons that you actually can map to anything, but you basically can't tell which ones without someone just testing it. The Dualsense edge has them. I have one mapped to play/pause and one to take screenshot. I believe the Xbox Elite 2 has them, but both my bumpers and 2 of 4 back buttons broke on that piece of crap so I had the remaining backbuttons on bumper duty full time.

The Beitong Zeus and Flydigi Apex/Vader have them.

Of the options I'd recommend the Vader 4, unless you mostly game on ps5.

I really don't know what you're talking about. The sticks are fully analog lol

You've just saved me money, thank you.

It's definitely to make more money.
Haven't had any issue with hall effect (although this new controller has TMR not hall effect) sticks, in fact I won't buy any controller without them going forward.

Just got mine in, but I don't have time to set it up right now. I opened it, and I have to say, without actually using it, this is a very light, premium feeling controller, and I can't believe how many fuckin buttons it has. I'm certain I won't use all of them, just like I can't stand the back buttons on my other controllers, but it's cool they're available for those who like that stuff. Very cool, can't wait to get a second to jump into it. I think I'll have some time tomorrow towards the end of the day, I'll report back how I like it.

For those in the know, as I'm curious, why'd they go with TMR sticks this time as opposed to Hall Effect? Are they better? I've always been led to believe that Hall was kind of the top of the mountain, so I'm curious about what rhe advantages/disadvantages there are. Thanks in advance.

It has better sensor, flatter response time, less noise and also takes less power - similar voltage spikes to regular analog joysticks - so they behave better in DualSenses and Xbox controllers.

Basically an upgrade upon Hall Effect.

Tech evolves, new tech in the making is Capactive joysticks.

K-Silver JL16 is a such joystick, 8000Hz Polling rate apparently instead of 1000Hz max like in Hall/TMR - in the realm of a gaming mouse like my Endgame OP1K :).

Bluetooth transfers max 250Hz if not 125Hz (can't remember from the top of my head) Polling rate, I think I can OC my DualSense but only in wired to 500Hz, 2.4Ghz dongle can transfer 1000hz and I think soon 8000Hz polling rate with a new sensor and a new type of joystick I mentioned in my earlier post.

Plus you can use 8BitDo Ultimate Software to tweak the deadzones to basically ZERO DEADZONE mode on any 8BitDo controller, FYI.

I don't understand your issues at all. Will try this controller in a while but all 8BitDo controllers I use get picked up by Steam even without Steam Input. Be it in Bluetooth or 2,4Ghz - but I try to use the ones with 2,4Ghz dongle, well in 2,4Ghz if I can and definitely if a controller has higher polling rate in 2,4Ghz mode.

As for the other ones, like 8BitDo Pro 2 for Bluetooth I use https://www.8bitdo.com/usb-wireless-adapter-2/ all the 2,4Ghz controllers work through it too not that I try to use them this way but that may be the difference between my setup and yours - I only have to connect my Ultimate 3-Mode from time to time on it when I game on Linux but that's about it.

It even has it's own soft you can update through upgrade tool as it get's picked up by the upgrade app as an 8BitDo Device.

Black one ordered, crazy that 8Bitdo is on the leading edge of tech at crazy good pricing

Not that crazy, they have been putting out a lot of solid products for years at reasonable prices. I have a couple old SN30 Pro/+ and the company is great, controllers very durable and repairable. They really got big the last few years.

You can change it to zero dead zone in the 8BitDo app
I've tried the software deadzone thing It's fine as shipped, It's the lack of smoothness as you move the stick outward that I don't like. Skipping stones on a lake.
There is a sensitivity setting in the software, maybe that will help smooth things out.

Maybe you just have a borked controller or are sitting next to a bunch of magnets but they are normally as smooth as butter.

Yeah, maybe something’s up with your controller. I’m using mine right alongside my DualSense Edge and if anything, the TMR sticks are smoother.

I don't think I have that issue in my other 8BitDo controllers like Pro 2, Ultimate 2C, Ultiumate 3-Mode.

You're not speaking about the resistance/ tension of the joystick it's self per se as I understand this but the motion of pushing the stick.

Sounds like a lube issue.

The DualSenses I use, and I took them apart, their analog sticks are factory overlubed to the point if you put your ear next to a analog module the lube is basically sloshing around.

Maybe you should just put a bit of lube on some axis here and there. To minimize the damage to the joysticks I would rather use something like machine oil/ mineral oil rather than contact spray, those can get tricky - it can work with spray or may not, some can just evaporate any lube that is there to begin with. One user on this forum had a positive expierenece with this type of spray and I personally did not.

The absolute best lube to use, non spray that is I think would be the ones the use in potentiometers in amplifiers but that would require to took the shell apart. I think it's called the slow down grease, at least in my native language - dunno how it translates to English tbh. It adds resistense to a potentiometer and it is not skipping as it is properly lubed and it would add tension similar to analog joystick I think. But that would be a hardcore move. And I have a bit of experience with joysticks and potentiometers but I'm no tech and I personally think I couldn't do it because I'm not just yet there skill-wise.
