A new era for PlayStation has just started

It's been April 1st for quite several hours in Japan, a date that marks the start of a new accounting period for several Japanese companies, including Sony Group Corporation. Effective now, Sony Group has appointed Hiroki Totoki (previous President, COO and CFO since April 2023) as its new President and CEO, while the previous executive with role of CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida (from April 2018 to April 2025) has been appointed as Executive Chairman.
Now, purely on the gaming side; following the departure of previous President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan (from April 2019 to April 2024), Hiroki Totoki (Chairman of SIE from October 2023 to April 2025) was appointed as Interim CEO for two months until June 2024, when the two CEO model was formed, having Hideaki Nishino as CEO of Platform Business Group and Hermen Hulst as CEO of Studio Business Group. Now, while these two roles will remain within the company, following the departure of Hiroki Totoki as Chairman, Hideaki Nishino has been appointed as the new President and CEO of SIE, becoming the true successor to Jim Ryan, and kickstarting a whole new era for PlayStation.
Hideaki Nishino joined SIE in January 2006, and has held several roles before becoming the head of the Platform Planning & Management (now called Platform Experience Group) division at SIE in April 2018, which, among several projects, most importantly oversaw the launch of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Portal.

BTW, both Nishino (in charge of Game & Network Services Business) and Hulst (in charge of Game Studio Business) also got officer roles at Sony Group Corporation, effective today.

I'd beg for Minna No Golf but we already got it...kinda. Damn you, monkey's paw!
Watching the trailer and going from "Clap Hanz seriously making another mobile title??" to "WHERE the fuck is Clap Hanz??" was for sure a rollercoaster.

I'm happy Clap Hanz is still in business and bewildered that Sony went with Bamco for the next entry in the series. In the end, I think all games released from either path will be worse for it, at least judging by the two Clap Hanz offerings I've tried. It's all so incredibly sad.

I think it's a shame that instead of a remaster of EG6, we got whatever the fuck that was (which already seems to be taking a lot from EG6, anyway). Hoping the end result is MUCH better than how it looks, because bringing back these series only to utterly butcher them is a no no from me.
Still hoping for a new SIE produced entry, mostly for Clap Hanz's sake. I do genuinely think it's a very important series to them, and I always saw it as some sort of sister series to Gran Turismo for sone reason, lol (I mean, EG1/GT1, EG2/GT2, EG3/GT3 and New EG/GT Sport all released pretty close to each other).

It's funny the timing around things.

So many fanboys are angry that Sony has adopted a multiplatform strategy, but had they done so earlier, it probably would have changed the dynamics and relationships they had with many studios.

It's clear that Everybody's Golf games weren't selling enough for Sony to greenlight them moving forward, with them only selling on PlayStation platforms.

ClapHanz moved to build games for other platforms with other publishers and, ultimately self self-publishing. The relationship was broken.

Sony looked to license out popular and well received IP and this one makes a lot of sense. It would have been great if ClapHanz was still involved but like I said that relationship was broken.

Sony has found their success as a massive AAA publisher. They're able to do this where others aren't because they can market their games directly against the popularity of PlayStation and at worst bundle games with PlayStation products to recoup their costs and they don't have to cut 30% of their revenue from games sold on PlayStation. No one else in the business has this luxury. That being said, even for them the cost of AAA development is becoming a hardship. As a result we've seen them start publishing games on PC, but this multiplatform strategy just came too late to save some studios and some relationships, but it should safeguard things moving forward, but these IP and relationships from the PS1-PS3 era? They're dead.

The best bet we have for them is for them to be licensed and made popular again by other companies, which is better than Sony sitting on them. I'd love to see a remaster of Arc the Lad for example. There are a ton of IP that Sony has that they just don't have the studios to develop against. Moving forward, I think we'll see Sony either farm these games out to developers or license them out to publishers.

Jak and Daxter
Arc the Lad
Legend of Dragoon
Motorstorm
Syphon Filter
SOCOM
Killzone
Uncharted
Sly Cooper
Wipeout
Wild Arms
Coolboarders
Demolition Derby
Twisted Metal

It's all on the table now.

That is exactly what they want. Boring, efficient, and predictable is a good thing.

Sony likely settled on March 31 to end the fiscal year so it aligns with when the Japanese government ends theirs. Companies can choose literally any date though. Some - especially in retail - end their fiscal year at the end of January so they get a big boost of sales at the end of the year.

Nishino has done a great job with hardware designs, reliability, cost effectiveness, and power/value as well as the software UI and playstation plus.

I have no doubt that the PS6 ecosystem is in good hands along with the expertise of Cerny.

I think there are reasons for concern

  • Failures surrounding Audeze and PS Link
  • Failed implementation of VRR
  • Reduced quality PC Ports
  • Failure to port games that would be most successful on PC: GT7, Demon's Souls, Dreams
  • Misuse of a studio like Bluepoint

Nobody bats 100%, and these are pretty inconsequential issues.

I think it goes to a lot of corner cutting and rushed execution, which are bad things. Putting Bluepoint on God of War GaaS is just mind boggling decision making.

I really appreciate Cerny for reducing bottlenecks, but I do think they cut some corners with the PS5/Pro that they shouldn't have which have probably resulted in long stemming issues.

I would love Sony to take a more Apple like approach to just making sure stuff comes out when it's ready. They used to have that mindset a bit more than they do now.

Bring back OG PS rpg exclusives like Alundra, Legend of Dragoon, Wild arms and Legend of Legaia. And more new jrpg and Japan and Asia studio games.

Many of these issues were not Nishino's doing. And the corner cutting and rushed execution seems to come with peripherals, not the consoles.

I try not to argue against success and Sony is successful. I might not find their current output appealing, but I realize I'm the minority in that opinion. I still pine for Minna no Golf though. Despite the presentation and some of the arcade elements, most other games don't have the mechanical complexity or physics simulations found in that series. Sprinkle in some wonderful course design and you had titles that provided countless hours of entertainment. Clap Hanz mobile and Switch titles design around mobile sensibilities and simplify those mechanics which robs the games of their staying power and makes them tedious overall. Once they went independent, I was confident Sony wouldn't work with them again and my outside hope is that Nintendo would hand them Mario Sports projects, but I don't think Nintendo has soured on Camelot even if those games are middling. I'm also not sure Nintendo would allow the type of depth that Clap Hanz once made.

How about making real genuine PC games like the ones that made noise from the 90s instead of gaas cause there's definitely an audience for that especially the number of pc gamers keeps skyrocketing?

Apple has been iterating on the same boring things for ages. I’m still on an iPhone 11, because why exactly would I upgrade?
And when they finally made something cool like their VR headset they priced it out of range for everyone and came in too late when VR was already on the way out.
Nope, don’t do it more like Apple!

You’re applying the wrong lessons.

There’s not much more to do when it comes to the current iPhone format, especially as it relates to annual progress, but they’ve certainly progressed since say 2020.

More importantly their products just work.

psvr2 is priced out of reach as well yet it has short comings. I’d rather a product that is niche have few shortcomings. It at least sets a high standard.

Yeah, the retarded anti-woke thumbnail is part of the point. Stellar Blade, a Sony produced game, was the poster child of the anti-woke mob last year.

Every year for the last 15 years, sony has held events in all regions they have offices in during what they call "Diversity Month". Every year, the CEO and other executives deliver a message to kick the week off. The last few years, that's been outgoing CEO Yoshida, and new CEO Totoki - the same people who were CEO and COO/CFO when Ghost of Tsushima came out.

Here's their message from last year. And here's Yoshida's message for International Women's Day this year.

You're fooling yourselves if you think this is a California thing.

I think everything will be fine. I think they'll continue growing and breaking gaming history records in all areas, getting many awards every year for their games, etc.

I also think that people who always complains independently about whatever they do or don't do will continue complaining while most PS fans instead will continue enjoying their console and games.
