A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

Actually I do believe he said that you could point your ship to a system and fly there without your "warp" but that it would take forever to get there that way. At least I remember a gaffer saying that.

Sean Murray definitely did say it was possible to manually fly between systems and also that there would be stuff to find in between, like dead planets etc.

Well that's new:

Steam – The game will be available to download from Friday 6PM BST [UK]/1PM EST [US]/ 10AM PST [US] / 7PM CEST, please note: Pre-loads are unavailable.

No preloads.

If there are more can you point me to them? Reddit? My personal stance is it's certainly a feature I am interested in. Ive defended the feature in the what do you do threads and will be pretty dissapointed if its not included. Im just not about to jump on the fire and brimstone bandwagon and shout about lies, conspiracy and malice until we have more evidence or an actual communication from the dev.

i see where youre coming from, and id gladly eat crow on this. i just have less faith i guess than you do.

i guess its hit a point for me where the lack of communication IS the communication

"We are aware of a few different issues reported by our community that we are working on a patch for."

Disregard what I said about crunch. They are really, really aware of the situation and chose not to disclose anything. Wow, man. Fuck this industry.

You chose to ignore the next paragraph:

We can’t give you an ETA as frustrating as that is, because we’re also still working to get the PC release live! I know we’ve said this before, but our small team will continue to work on this game so we appreciate the patience the community has already shown us.

They are 15 people. They literally work on one project or issue at a time. Right now, the PC launch is their project.

Considering that the game isn't very large, it shouldn't be much of an issue for people who bought it, but strange that they'd do this.

I took his 'incredibly rare' stuff to mean 'unlikely two people will happen to cross paths given the vastness of space/planets', not 'it's incredibly rare two people in the same location at the same time will see each other' like some people think in this thread. Geez.

Working on multiple games to be fair.
Not all of them are on the Elite dev team.

That'S from 2014 though.
The game looks much better nowadays.

I've only seem them do a couple iOS games and an Xbox game besides Planet Coaster and ED. So I'd think at least half of their staff maybe slightly less is working on ED still. (assuming they aren't doing unannounced work). Which still puts them way over HG 13 or 14.

I agree and understand that positioning but that doesn't really answer the question you highlighted, at least I'm not seeing it.

I agree that a more timely response on their part.would have benefited everyone. What I'm mainly asking is why can't we save the accusations for after we've received the response?

Because right now to someone out of the loop it just reflects poorly on the studio.

It looks to me like players are just trashing the studio because they didn't get what they wanted in one way or another, to purposely harm them (sales).

Feel free to ridicule me here for this, but...

In a way, this is a fucked up hostage situation. We can't just ask for answers, and escalate in an appropriate fashion over time? We have to skip right to the end and go all out? I mean, am I just sort of questioning human nature at this point and should just learn to live with it?
As it should. They sold the game for $60 to many players based on obtuse misinformation and now they refuse to clarify when people are asking a very simple, short question.

Why do you think they don't deserve the backlash?

An no, people are trashing the studio because they sense that they are treated like dumb idiots once again.

"We are aware of a few different issues reported by our community that we are working on a patch for."

Known issues:

We are aware of a few different issues reported by our community that we are working on a patch for.

People who have pre-ordered the game and want to redeem their special items may not be seeing them because they are named differently in the game.
The Alpha Vector ship is named Domanish S84 in-game, and (in the US) the Rezosu AZ65 is named Final Shadow XIV in game. (if you still don’t see them please contact support as per above)

We’ll update here with more support info so do check back!

So not seeing the other player is not an issue. Because for sure it is known.

The point was not whether you should be able to fly into the sun or not (or whether it makes sense), but about whether the universe is a huge free roam zone or just several very big but seperate spaces.

I know, they know, they don't care.

I thought it was supposed to be a massive connected universe with all the moving pieces. Surprised you can't fly into a sun.

Sean Murray definitely did say it was possible to manually fly between systems and also that there would be stuff to find in between, like dead planets etc.
Got a source for all of that? Because I don't see how it matters at all. Distances between systems are realistic. Even using the Pulse Engine it would take years to travel from one system to another (assuming you can keep it fueled). It may be techically possible but in practice it's impossible and irrelevant.

So not seeing the other player is not an issue. Because for sure it is known.

exactly. i'd expect them at least to write the following:

Known issues:

We are aware of a few different issues reported by our community that we are working on a patch for.

People who are playing the game and want to find other players may not be seeing them because Sean is a fucking liar.

We’ll update here with more support info so do check back!

You're right. Actually he said something to the effect of "you can, it would take a long time, but none of our developers or testers have had the patience to try", implying that it was possible, but a waste of time. But some people like to waste time for the sake of it, lol.

Ahh, yeah, that's it. Thanks!

Would be great if you could provide a link if you could find it. It maybe actually something to ad to the OP if you really can't do that. That is a pretty big one IMO.

"A TRULY OPEN UNIVERSE If you can see it, you can go there. You can fly seamlessly from the surface of a planet to another, and every star in the sky is a sun that you can visit."

#2: IN a video interview that I still need to find.

"but nobody's actually done it yet. It takes, like, an inordinate amount of time. Like a really, really long time."

What is this, rational thought? I gave them my $60, they are now my slaves and I expect them to prioritize my issues above any other priority that they might have.

It sure would be nice if they would enumerate what issues they are talking about....

Maybe they are prioritizing a list, and will release it after the PC version launches, since they may cover some in that version. Like most development.

Since you know...

We can’t give you an ETA as frustrating as that is, because we’re also still working to get the PC release live! I know we’ve said this before, but our small team will continue to work on this game so we appreciate the patience the community has already shown us.

Exactly. This is what many people do not understand. We are the consumer. They are the ones who are getting our money and no small amount of it at that. They are literally getting rich off of the misinformation. It is in their immediate best interest to keep it that way though it would be better off for them in the long run if they didn't. It is in our best interest if we get answers as quickly as possible and the longer it takes to get them the more faith people are going to lose in the studio and their name will become slandered.

If you bought it at launch, but they fairly quickly realized how bonkers that was and changed it. It's now $50 for the game and the extension, and it's on sale quite often.

I actually paid 120€ for the lifetime pass back in Alpha.
I get absolutely everything they ever release for the game in terms of content automatically.

Yup.

I said a couple of pages back, they might save a chunk of money which would've been lost by clarifying the issue but they will pay with their reputation instead. Unfortunately they chose the short-sighted option.

It was like that for a bit if I remember correctly. My mates got into it late and wanted me to grab it on steam, but it was too rich for my blood at $60. As was NMS

That a person could go on live television and lie to the face of Colbert. I am not even american and understand you just dont do that unless you have no morals whatsoever.

I can just imagine Colbert coming home from a long day of writing and filming to sit down with his PS4 to play No Man's Sky with his buddies from work. "Don't worry guys, I know work today was stressful and long, but now let's relax a bit and explore the galaxy together. First though, let me check Neogaf to see how we get this multiplayer started."

Why do you think they don't deserve the backlash?

I haven't heard their side of the story yet, and I think it's still too early. I can't really give an estimate on when I think would be the appropriate time, either, so you've got me there. I'll admit that I'm a bit lenient when I've been presented with nothing but a positive image of the studio and Sean Murray himself; generally when I get a glimpse into the life of a developer that isn't some heavily-produced marketing piece it never really seems like one of a salesman or con artist or anything like that.

You see folks show up in places like on a Giant Bomb broadcast and they seem nice, relatable people for the most part, and I mean I don't see anyone eyeing a PR Agent off-set or anything like that so I assume that I'm seeing that person in a somewhat relaxed state. I know personally that software development, especially game development is a huge beast and sometimes things just don't come together in time or things change and unfortunately the secrecy in the gaming industry is a huge negative to the player who purchases these products. I believe that people are right to ask for answers, but at the end of the day these are also people with lives (on both sides!) and they're doing a job. In this specific instance these people at Hello Games seem pretty dedicated and passionate about their game. I've watched the development of this game over time and I've seen their setbacks, and sure all that factors into my view of them.

But in the end they are human beings that I think deserve a bit of respect for the effort they've put into this game. A lot of the effort is shown in the final product, right now its a small portion of it that is missing and players are choosing to focus on this part and just hurl accusations immediately.

I think the backlash they are receiving now is warranted should they come out and say the feature is cut regardless of some NDA. But out of the respect of everyone's time is it so misguided to ask that we get to that moment naturally through escalation rather than throw out any semblance of decency and dignity immediately upon finding out that feature X is missing in a game filled with features?

Moreover I think it is certainly a fair question to ask people are so caught up in the multiplayer aspect what their intents and desires were with that feature, because it is very possible due to what we've read and what we can glean from purposely vague responses that the included feature just wouldn't stack up anyway. Being more civil about the issue in this manner would certainly gain more favor with those doing the coding to maybe include that feature over shaming them.

Im just upset that this is so unprecedented

Imagine if bungie got up to show destiny, and right at the start showed off the enviroment and said something like "you can walk to everything you can see here, but we'll save that for later" or "see those mountains? you can climb those" and then it turned out in the retail release, you couldnt do that at all.

Thatd really piss people off. Good thing that will never happen right guys?

oh.................................................................................

"Dear No Man's Sky,

Thanks for making a support page! I saw during the promotion of the game you guys kept saying I could run into and see other players, but no one seems to be able to get it to work. People have gone to the same place under numerous conditions while online and there are no visible players to anyone, despite that feature being mentioned as an exciting uncommon feat! What's going on? How do we see other players who are online at the same location?

Thanks"

Can you travel from system to system without warping?

Not sure. Havent had years to try yet. But I dont understand your question. That's not what the quote said. It was two separate statements. one about planet surfaces and one about stars in the sky.

It wasn't saying you could seamlessly fly to every star in the sky....

Stephen-Colbert-Rages-Over-Losing-The-Government-Shutdown-Game.gif

See? You just dont do that. Its Colbert man.

No that's all true. You can visit the surface of any planet you can see. Every star in the sky can be visited. You can't go directly to the star but you can be in that star's system.
So its not an actually seamless universe after all then? Just several huge rooms around stars which you choose to fly to by menu?

15 people total.

It's going to take a while for bugs and glitches to be fixed.

BTW - they each have specialized fields. So you can't ask an Environmental Artist or Animator to work on netcode and you can't ask a Networking Engineer or A.I. Scriptor to build more space station interiors.

So just kick back and have a little patience. These people also need food and sleep. Shocking, I know.
