Again, Sean did not lie. How many OTHER people are meeting up together at the same spot today? Or is it just THESE two streamers who won the astronomical lottery?

Until other people start meeting up and streaming together, I can only see those two guys from yesterday as EXTREMELY LUCKY.

That "non-issue" is over as far as I'm concerned.

So, the ONLY issue here is why they can't see each other face to face. And I think we owe HG and Sean some time to figure that out and let us know. It's DAY 2. Give them some time to figure it out.

They aren't hundreds of engineers like Blizzard. They are all of 15? 20? employees in a small office? Give them so time to investigate and respond.

Hell, the PC version hasn't even released yet.

He is a liar because he said several times before the game's launch that you could play with other people, and now we've found out at launch that you can't.

He's being ambiguous because he was thinking this entire time that maybe it would be a week at the very least before any players actually found each other and by then he'd be able to come up with an excuse.

Unless I at least get a confirmation along the lines of "You can never see anyone else", "You can see other people but there were server issues" or at the very least "You can see other people but it doesn't necessarily work how you would think" then my purchase on PC will go from definitely Friday to a wait and see. The feature isn't a game changer but I'm not about to get burned again with a game that seems more than it is and all this just seems shady right now.

I mean how hard is it to give customers direct information. Use my third option if you want to keep the mystery

We don't owe them anything, they owe us a working game with features they advertised for the money they got for it. It's absurd that people actually think they owe devs anything beyond the money for their game.

What needs to be investigated? All people are asking is whether its actually a feature or not. Nothings wrong with saying "Yes meeting people has been implemented but the servers are having issues, we're working on a fix". That would literally end all of this discussion. And yet all we get is more cryptic bullshit. "Wow two people already got to the same location! Wow so many species!"

My calculator can't handle the awesome power of quintillion factorials, so I don't know what the chances are of 1 million guys finding a match in a quintillion planets.

In any case, it's straight up lying if this isn't possible in the game. You don't get to claim it's a feature and then not bother to include it. At least Molyneux owned up to his lies/wishful thinking before the game was released. Tweating about it as if two players literally met is utterly gross.

No Mans Sky is a game of self-directed goals, since there isn't really a plot except maybe find the centre of the universe and maybe meet/kill Atlas or something.
As such, a hell of a lot of players are going to have a No Mans Sky bucket list that includes, "find another player".

And lets not forget that this is a clear goal, since Sean has said that the only way to find out what you look like is through another player's eyes. In a game about exploration, "What am I?" is going to be a question that players want to answer.

Personally, I was going to find the planet closest to the centre of the Euclid galaxy and see if other people were around. Or possibly to build/rename a base there and call it, "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe".

I hope that this is just a bug, but I have almost 0% hope for that. If it were, then you'd thing Sean and Co. would reach out to those players and try to make it work, rather than expose themselves to the negative PR of promising something that was never going to be possible.

It sounds more like Sean thought it was statistically impossible for players to meet, so he thought he could get away with lying about it.
I always thought that multiplayer netcode was hard, so why would a small team try and code it in when it was extremely unlikely to ever be used?

Alarm bells should have been going off when he was making rounds on late night talk shows and on Colbert, they were going around a planet tagging animals and they all had witty Colbert-isms, a sound effect, and a Colbert icon. They made a Colbert build of the game and used it to push the "unique" experience every player will have with the game.

Any programmer would have immediately sat up straight and understood what was occurring. Even the "zoom out" cinematic they play to represent all of the (potential) different nodes is shady as fuck.

In the meantime, buy the game guys!

I'm sure in two or three weeks they will have figured out that they didn't put the feature in the game and then they will tell us. No lies detected!

Two people actually met in the exact same spot and could not see each other.

The meeting was surrounded by network problems, No Man's Sky server problems and other things.

but he said two people have already met up in the game. He said that features were added to make it easier to spot players and it has been confirmed that said features do exist in the game. He probably doesnt even know about this thread. I see no reason why people are even questioning him tbh.

And if Im not mistaken didnt a gaffer somewhere in this thread confirm that they met up with someone as well?(although no screenshot was provided)

From the outside looking in, this just seems like a mindless witch hunt, especially when you consider how rare it is to even see someone in the game, which would help explain why many people havent met anyone.

If you can't see people in game then you will never know if you were even close to anyone.

The thought of having a fleeting moment of seeing another player in a universe this vast is truly amazing, if it's not possible then come out and say so and I'll adjust my expectations for the game accordingly.

Communicating via reddit and a stream is not meeting up together, it's been made possible by the internet not by the game, they both played the game and were in the same place but they met up in a stream chat or on reddit, they didn't have any interaction in game at all, not even a fleeting glimpse.
 
If the center of the universe is in the same location in everyone's game, and everyone's getting closer to it, how would it not end up that tons of people would be in the same locations in game eventually? They're all in the process of reducing the distance between themselves and other players. With that in mind, I'd guess this game is not built to handle that kind of multiplayer traffic and you just can't see anyone else in-game.

I'll try to avoid major spoilers and just answer this specific question, as much as I can:

You could probably wait around near the center in an effort to meet other players, as long as you don't actually go there and complete the story.

I thought the immediate "no" he gives was good enough.

Though yes, the question wouldn't have needed to be asked multiple times if he'd just said "no" before. Or if he'd just say "no" now.

Maybe he now sees this as an opportunity to sell copies of the game based on people thinking it possibly has a feature that it doesn't actually have, whereas blatantly saying "no" would lose potential sales.

Well he does directly tell Colbert that the only way you'd know how you looked was if someone else sees you. So that's pretty cut and dry to me.

What a fantastic rollercoaster of a thread. I don't really care much about multiplayer in NMS but I can't figure out why Sean won't confirm/deny stuff instead of skirting the issue.

Again: Sean Murray himself described the rudimentary MP functionality of players meeting and seeing each other in various interviews. Just yesterday he tweeted "Holy shit two players found each other".

This is not something that players projected into the game. It was announced and marketed by the developers themselves. It doesn't matter how important or unimportant this feature is to each individual player. The issue is their deceitful communication.

Lets do this.

Nitpicking: the players are having selective abstraction about a handful of thing of a bast game. Things that would be or not, confirmed later on, not 72 hours of the game release. People wanted a everlasting game and now people want to do everything that the game has to offer in one sit.

Crazy expectations: some people imagine or believe that seen another player would be like a tag team in a FPS maybe that is not the case.

Worlds collide/player idea (imaginary): The developers have an idea, the executed like they thought initially. They clumsy enough talk about this idea and then people start to making assumptions about this idea creating a concept far away from the concept of the developers.

I think that he is not ill intended. I think rather that deceitful (i.e. Blizzard's lot box system) he is clumsy expressing his vision. Again, this is an opinion from a human being, so I can be wrong and the man is a master class con artist.

This is accurate and depressing.

I don't want full on multiplayer functionality but if another player is in the same place as me it's been said you could see them, the chance of it is minuscule due to the size of the universe alone.

Saying that they found each other because they were in the same location but for all purposes both offline playing single player games is just shady, they didn't find anything but disappointment.

Also, where the HECK is the one screencap a gaffer posted from a gaming magazine that talked about "No Man's Sky ONLINE" coming a while after release. I remember it vaguely mentioning that they plan on making it easy to join your friends WORLDS to play with them. I tried googling but I only get the usual suspect articles "does NMS have MP" and old interviews?

I CAN'T be the only one who remembers the screencap? Well might be cause I vaguely remember it being written in german. If someone has it we can translate it for the rest?

divide that by a million players all online at the same time and your odds of running into someone are:

1 in 18,000,000,000 Billion

Now, yes, two people seem to have found each other somehow, that doesn't change the fact that up until now it should have been seen as such a REMOTE possibility that buying the game in the hopes it would happen just seems incredibly foolish.

On the other hand, seeing that it is now possible, I can see people getting upset that you can't see one another (apparently), but nothing leading up to this should have given you the impression that you would be playing this game for a few months and probably find someone.

If I wasn't sure whether the miscommunications were Sean's fault or the fans' fault yesterday, post 1799 onwards of this thread really, really cleared that up.

It's like Sean Murray felt like he could promise whatever regarding multiplayer because the odds he'd be found out were so infinitesimally small, only to end up winning the reverse lottery on the first day.
