A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

Please reference the employers email to me where he said he wasn't behind, and I simply wasn't informed of the "process".

As an employer, not my problem. You should have asked. Receptionist would be pulled aside later and I would tell her to let interviewees know of the process more explicitly and that'd be that.

I fought with myself from the thirty minute mark to the 45 minute mark. I would have bombed the interview terrible with how upset the entire thing was making me.

I've sat here and tried to rationalize that maybe I have a problem...maybe something is wrong with me that makes me think so different than the general population of GAF... but I feel my problem comes more in how I present myself on here and how I've presented the situation. It was a terrible spot to be in, I promise you.

NO YOU WEREN'T

Get it through your thick skull. You were in an office lobby for longer than you anticipated. That is not a terrible position. You have some warped since of reality if you think you were in a bad spot. I...

I need some air.

Okay, but your would-be boss and the receptionist both couldn't comprehend your behaviour and both appear to have come to the same conclusion all the rest of us have. Are they GAFfers, or is this a suggestion that maybe you did something wrong in real life here?

I've not made any of the people I've interviewed recently wait more than 10 minutes. Again, they have to take a test before they can even talk to me, so by the time they get to the interview process they've already dedicated hours of their time sitting alone in a conference room filling out paperwork or on the phone.

The point is, if you can't wait for 30 minutes for me because one of our clients is exploding on the shop floor, then get out. You aren't for me.

I'm sure most employers would feel the same.

Must be an industry thing I guess. I work in software in NC. No tests or paperwork before an interview, and most employers here would not feel the way you do.

It's probably an industry thing. We would honestly all have a great laugh at the expense of OP and his e-mail.

As others have probably mentioned throughout the entirety of this thread, STOP EQUATING THIS "ORDEAL" TO A TRAMPLING OF RIGHTS OR WORKPLACE ETHICS. You had to fucking wait minutes for an interview.

Don't start spewing out all this self-righteous crap about standing up for rights when this comes nowhere near real situations that involve real workplace offenses.

You had to WAIT. You could have ASKED why you had to wait. What's so bad about waiting that we suddenly jump into how foolish people are for not agreeing with you?

Were you being abused? Were you being exploited? What's with all this hurr durr I stood up for myself garbage? And to boot you begin to blame it on America? Do you see why people seem to have "different" points of view from you when you take this stance? We're peons in some corporate scheme because we don't agree on HOW YOU HAD TO WAIT FOR AN INTERVIEW (minutes, not hours)??

We can have a long discussion about ethics within the workplace, but I find it hard to believe you were being taken advantage of given what you've said in this thread. As someone who's witnessed and worked with people that are TRULY exploited at their place of work, come on man.

If only they hadn't locked you in a room all alone, you could have asked someone what was going on instead of having to dig your way out.

Oh wait.

Lol at the fly-over state comment, from someone outside of the US. Where'd you even hear that.

From the Census:
Median household income: 2008-2012, $49,604

So yeah its quite good.

I don't see it as disparaging. More like...outside of the usual tourist destinations, and not endlessly hearing how maliciously expensive it is to live in.

You sound like an amazing person to work for. Where can I apply?

Do you live in Pittsburgh? Do you have manufacturing quality systems experience?

Send me your resume in a PM and I'll glance it over. We're looking to fill a position right now. If your resume intrigues me enough to give a shit about you then maybe I'll call you in to be tested to see if you can even talk to me.

I already addressed this.

Amen, dude. OP is out of fucking touch with reality and he has willfully chosen to suffer further in his life. Fuck it, it really is his choice to live this way.

Sure, but if an interview is appointed for 3 p.m., you don't show up at 3 p.m., right? You show up way before to finish the paperwork so that you can start with the actual interview. I work in IT myself and from my experice interview at 3 p.m. means interview at 3 p.m., but if that's how things are handled in the states, I feel sorry for the gals and guys working in IT over there. And "waiting a little bit" isn't the problem. It's how you treat the person waiting. As somebody who needs a job, would you come late to a job interview without saying anything? "Waiting a little bit" isn't the problem, right?

If a meeting is scheduled for 3, that is when it should start, not when you should turn up. But nothing was set in stone that at 3pm on the dot, OP would be sitting down with the boss. That’s just when the interview process would start. Who would think that they would meet with the boss before the paperwork had been filled out and the test had been taken? What if you fail the test or your paperwork isn’t adequate?

The point is that just because the boss was inconsiderate in this one instance by not coming out and greeting the applicant personally, should the applicant storm out in a strop and send a shitty email, or should he wait for an acceptable amount of time before asking the secretary to enquire into the delay? OP wanted our feedback as to if he was out of line, to which the answer has been a resounding ‘Yes!’. If he was some hotshot developer from a reputable company thinking of leaving his position and coming to work for the boss, maybe the answer would have been different. Fact is that he only recently had his criminal record wiped and all of a sudden thinks the floodgates of all the high paying IT gigs that he so sorely deserves should open and companies should be clamouring to get him on their payroll.

I once sat and waited at reception for six hours for a job interview because I needed a fucking job. I arrived at eleven, and after being told to take a seat, I waited. At around one o'clock I politely asked the girl at reception when I might be interviewed. She said she'd check for me. So, I sat and waited some more. When the interviewer came out to go home at the end of the day, they realised they'd entirely forgotten about me. Twice. They shook my hand, thanked me for my patience and dedication, glanced over my resume, and then gave me the job on the spot. Worked there for a few years, before getting an offer elsewhere. The interviewer for that position's first question was: "So, I have to ask, is it true [name] forgot you'd arrived for your interview, and you waited all day?". And it landed me that job as well.

Patience and dedication is difficult to demonstrate in an interview, while laziness and self-importance are self-evident. The employment seekers aren't asked to perform in vaudeville masquerades of humiliation - they're asked to show up and wait their turn. If the OP is a representation of the current attitude that out-of-work people have, it's no wonder this economy is fucked. You're an unemployed worker in an saturated market that is outsourcing the majority of its work, not a displaced uniquely skilled genius that is going to alter the future of the company for whom you work. Act accordingly.

I didn't find that odd, to be honest. I've heard fly over state, it's a thing people say....not too often in most areas of the country i've lived but...

*cough cough* mostly lived in fly over states *cough*

OK now we're down to a half hour, because you were so upset at that point you would have blown the interview. So now we can discuss whether it's completely beyond the pale to wait a half hour for an interview.

Honestly you should have just waited. Once you talked to the guy then you could have decided whether or not it was a place you'd be able to tolerate.

At the very least you could've asked the receptionist the cause of the delay or something similar.

If I were you I'd call him back tomorrow and make up some bullshit excuse about an emergency you had and try to reschedule

70K + Overtime at 27 in Atlanta is hard to pass up...especially if you are having monetary issues...

Dude, he already sent him a nasty email and completely destroyed his chances. LOL it's like on page 4 or 5 of this thread.

Edit:

LIONELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL WHERE ART THOU

I really wanted to give Thacker some good advice after reading the OP, since I assumed he might have just had a panic attack and fucked up, I mean who doesn't?

...but then I realized this thread is 10+ pages. I skimmed through and realized countless others have tried to give him good advice. So much denial and being defensive. Instead of just admitting to what you did wrong and learning from this.

Keeping repeating 'merica to yourself and believing that we are are sheeple part of this systemm and it is only you who is different.

I leave you with this classic post from Timedog to summarize your delusions;

Timedog said:
Every other being around you is an automaton. You are the only self-aware entity in existence. An existence that was crafted around you, solely for you. The every quantua of every one of your movements is being watched and holds the utmost importance to The Watchers.

Beware thee, Seeker: you will never see another message like this for the whole of your life. This is your one chance to understand your surroundings. Do with this information what you will.

Farewell, Seeker.

Because telling someone you aren't interested in working with them, and you felt how their interview process was handled was very unprofessional is "nasty"

Corporations need more protection than the people.

OP you're lucky you like in a good country I guess.

For that paycheck I'd wait on a shitty chair for a week, reading tweets on my phone and playing something on my Vita.

You need to give up this little "I'M RIGHT BECAUSE REASONS" attitude. Damn, it was an opportunity to change your current status and improve your career/lifestyle. Maybe you wouldn't have gotten the position. Maybe you would have. All that matters right now is that you gave up a chance to improve yourself because of your impatience. I once waited 2 hours after traveling a 1:30-hour trip at a hotel lobby for a contractor interview, constantly getting harrassed by other potential employees due to my age. I could have left at any time, since they didn't seem interested in hiring an 18-year-old for the position. But I stayed because I knew damn well that I needed to improve my lifestyle to reach my goals.

After working with them for two years, I left and am now waiting for college to start so I can build upon the skills that I learned and get a better position. The best part? My first year+more is completely covered thanks to that job. Now, with a hell of a resume, I hope to get a job to pay whatever I need in the following year.

But it's easier to sit in a corner and shit "'Merica" all over your keyboard while complaining about how those 45 minutes + trip were a waste of time.

Nice.

I swear, every time you say "'merica" I put more of my large paycheck into my retirement account.

You're like, the perfect example of what not to do and an inspiration to us all.

And it makes me absolutely sick someone like you is in charge of hiring ANYWHERE.

Your post before about "maybe if you can pass our test I MIGHT talk to you, peasant" is disgusting.

OP should definitely have asked what was up but tbh, if you don't have anywhere else to be...

That said, in the past when I have been interviewing people I've been very forthcoming if I'm running behind even a couple of minutes, and it is silly and unprofessional for him to leave him totally hanging. At the same time...it's 45 minutes and you didn't have anything else going on, did you?

You haven't PM'd me yet though so I dunno if you can even take the test man.

It's not that you're a peasant. Peasants traditionally worked for their bread after all...

The hell? That's a great way of making sure that you're not wasting each others time, not looking down on others.

You probably think that employers shouldn't look up applicants on social media too, don't you?

You know when people answer to a basic "idiot" post then you know its a troll character. There. I feel better now its just a joke.

You mentioned that you have anxiety issues. I do too, and believe me I sympathize. Interviews are extremely stressful and I am usually pretty nervous beforehand. There have been times when some part of my brain tells me to just back out, to avoid the situation at all costs, anything to avoid that feeling of anxiety. It's a defense mechanism, like a fight-or-flight response.

From the sounds of it, your anxiety got the best of you and you just fled the situation and now you are trying to justify leaving (probably more to yourself that to us). You have to get your anxiety under control. Earlier in the thread people were telling you to seek help, and I know that can sound like a mean-spirited thing to say, but there IS help for anxiety and depression and you will benefit from finding out what your options are in that regard. I found effective treatment for my depression and anxiety about 10 years ago and I am so thankful for the friend who finally convinced me to see someone. It can all get better.

You do realize the irony of using "'merica" as a sarcastic response, right? An unemployed person with a criminal history who is too proud to wait for a potential 70K+ opportunity?

'merica indeed.

Thats pretty impatient even without the high stakes your situation has. Sorry man, I hope you can reconcile with that guy or something. But you can't wait an hour? Did you bring your phone? I mean come on. Seriously?
