A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

Because having to ask why the fuck he was wasting my time after I had already made up my mind this wasn't a place I wanted to work was pretty useless.

On top of that, I was listening to the bosses conversation as he was literally 10 feet away in the next room. Asking this to the receptionist and he would have heard exactly what I said.

People get busy.
He wasn't wasting your time; you were. I don't want to pick on you so don't perceive any meanspiritedness here.. but any employable person wouldn't have blinked at this situation. Forty-Five minutes might as well be a nanosecond for a busy person. That is nothing. You can get lost tidying a shelf for Forty-Five minutes. I understand that you are fragile and affected by your environment, its shockingly clear given your disproportionate reactions and self mythologization. You came into that interview expecting them to be against you and mistook the common inconsideration of a frantic work place as a personal insult.

I don't care if you know it emotionally but you goddamn well better understand intellectually there is something wrong with that.

I have a feeling he isn't the only one thinking that. Just saying. You do not sound like a joy to work with.

Maybe you are, maybe the internet just isn't working for you. Let's hope it's that.

I am extremely focused and dedicated to everything I set my mind to. Despite my anxiety I am calm in pressure situations related to high impact information technology decisions and problems. I played poker professionally for three years and was very successful in that timeframe doing it. I mixed live play with mostly online play and have over 8 million hands in online, and over 110,000 in live play. During that time I made highly consequential decisions under extreme time constraint which had a direct reflection on my own personal income and livelihood. I maintained a much higher than average win rate for the respective stakes I played and learned a ton about many different types of people. I have a relatively decent resume which includes industry certifications and the market rate for a position I could hold is in the 60-80k range.

I am a smart individual but I do ask for respect and courtesy towards myself especially if I extend it to you. I can and will make a company a lot of money off the work that I do, but I want to be appreciated for that work. This doesn't mean monetary compensation as much as it means actual appreciation and respect for me as an individual.

"GAF, FML"

"Yeah you're an idiot, FYL"

"Whatever, you're all pawns within an elaborate corporate scheme where if you give an employer an inch, he or she will massacre your rights and squash you to the ground. Humans are more than the sum of hours they put into work and I refuse to be a doormat when-"

"Did you ask the receptionist, or the manager for that matter, why you had to wait so long before leaving?"

"HEY FUCK YOU MAN"

If my extremely busy boss said "your job depends on attending this meeting with me", then yes, yes I would sit my ass down for as long as it took.

I've literally spent an entire afternoon rescheduling a 15 minute meeting via Exchange with our CEO just to have him cancel it and tell me it'd be better next week.

Three hours waiting for a meeting.

Of course, it's kind of my job, so of course I'd do that.

The bottom line is both this thread and a future job take away possible grinding time in D3 Thacker. Do the right thing.

]No. I expected the owner to come out and speak to me and talk to me directly, not have his receptionist handle all communication between us.

It's the owner that was playing like he was a big business, not me.
Man, listen to yourself. You really have a lot to learn about life and I have news for you...if you want to work for a big corporation like you've mentioned many times in this thread, you should be prepared to deal with a lot worse than having to wait for 45 minutes in an interview especially starting out. Your posts make it seem like the company should've been all about you. Maybe the next place you interview at will roll out a red carpet for you and make an announcement with trumpets to the entire company that you've arrived for your interview

I keep wanting to post a thing about how you need to pull your head out of your ass and stop calling others doormats or some shit because some of us actually work hard and you just walk out of interviews.

But I'm worried the thread will be locked soon and all my work will be wasted.

Yeah, this is rather tragically true :\

I mean, ultimately the OP bears the responsibility for walking out of the interview, and we can only hope he learns something from this...

...but we also have to consider that this happened in a cultural context where people are told from birth that they're all incredibly special, that we're supposed to "be ourselves," and that everyone who disagrees with you are just "haters." We're not teaching people how they SHOULD handle a job interview like this, and we should all be doing more to create a better culture that help people succeed rather than sabotage themselves like this.

Wut.

I hope the OP gets the chance to make other great threads like this.

Also, my father always told me to have some backspine and endure shitty behaviours. You can't always get up and walk away in life, grow some balls. One day you'll have a family to protect, feed and raise, and you'll have to learn this the hard way (not directly talking to you Samarecarm :D )

All I hear from you is me, me, me. Your time isn't that valuable.

That is sick, and it angers me a great deal you feel such a condescending and judgemental way about someone you've never met, but thanks for your input.

It seems like a lot of things anger you a great deal.

Also, that slight title change, snuck in when I wasn't looking,

Unbelievable. Will you expect Ronald McDonald to greet you in person on your next interview? Receptionists generally, you know, receive people until they are ready for you.

If you're that good at Poker, why are you in debt? Why do you need a job?

You're too good for these guys Thacker. You're too good for GAF, and they can't see you're just being humble. They'll never respect you like you deserve.

Industry certifications?! Well that changes everything!

Please read his email back to me.

Not trying to justify, just saying. He specifically stated he was not busy, and that this was simply "process" and it's my fault for not understanding their process that was not communicated to me.

I can't find it and I'm not reading 30ish pages of this chaos.

If the employer had nothing important going on and said it was just business as usual and you don't like that work culture, that's valid. Not everyone can deal with a work environment that is not punctual. I prefer a punctual environment, but I work for an important company and its very unpunctual because people are busy and meetings are back to back. It's fine for me though.

But don't act the way you did. Don't pay rudeness with rudeness and burn bridges in your industry! It's a small world these days.

*GoT spoilers or discussion*

As someone who is finishing up the first book, please lay off AGOT spoilers.

I think you guys are looking at the money way more than you should. Sadly... 'merica.

Money does not make a job any more enjoyable to work. Do I know the exact situation? No. But I do know that the impression that was given was TERRIBLE from the onset.

Don't worry Thacker. You are going to really enjoy that Mc Donalds night shift job that is in your immediate future.

OP thought he was scheduled to interview at 3 PM. The interviewer/owner of the company got busy, ignored him for 45 mins. OP couldn't handle waiting to get a $70k+/yr job even though he's deep in debt and lives with his broke-ass parents.

OP says to himself "Well, I'm out, I wait for NO man, this is SO unprofessional!", drives home, and immediately posts on GAF to gloat about he's not a slave to the man, BRO.

'merica

thanks for the recap

and oh boy OP dun goofed for 70k he should have stayed there all day

Online poker went away in it's former state thanks to black Friday and making a living only doing liveplay wasn't feasible where I was at. Even playing professionally in vegas is very tough as you need to play 5/10 to have a decent lifestyle and the 5/10 games are full of grinders and very smart individuals doing the same thing you are.

You're an egotistical gambler with sizable debt who makes bad decisions?

Prefer to be unemployed and whine about it on the internet than engage in simple social interaction and ask about the interview process.

Nah brah, Blizzard would never let someone as dedicated as Thacker have loot. They'd rather give it to the filthy casuals.

I wish people could focus on the actual thing instead of his personal situation, criminal records and/or anything else.

The way the company handles business and future employees is flat out unprofessional. The kicker is, that people seem to have understanding for this behavior and act like "that's the real world, it sucks but suck it up. Have to pay your bills man. Have to put your ego/pride aside sometimes and be the bitch.".

What's up with that? It sounds like any company in this world has the right to treat people like shit, just because they pay them money/give them a job. OP, don't wanna deal with twats like that boss? Get self-employed.

This.

You are coating all your failures with a layer of pride.

This is not meant as an insult, we all makes mistakes and fail.

It's amazing how many people are participating in this thread and tried to give you genuine advice, and you STILL keep saying 'murica .

What if he heard the boss ordering a hawaiian pizza in the office, in your eyes he made the right move.

I get where you're coming from however in this situation, I don't consider what the owner did as "treating him like shit." That's an extreme accusation.

That is sick, and it angers me a great deal you feel such a condescending and judgemental way about someone you've never met, but thanks for your input.

You have posted enough on GAF for me to know more about you than I need to without ever meeting you. Ironically, I probably know more about you than you did about your interviewer or the company before you chose to walk out of there. And yet you feel justified in your original action and here you are feeling angry about my comments. Lol.

FWIW, I have a decent job in a good industry in a country where the labour market is tight. If I cared enough about a potential job right now to attend an interview, I would have never done what you did. In fact, I have suffered through far worse interview processes in the past without burning any bridges. Maybe that's why life is comparatively easy for me these days. You reap what you sow.
