A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

I agree with the OP that the interviewer was rude in not taking time to explain the delay.

But in context of a job market where unemployment and wages are big issues, waiting an hour extra for an interview is trivial. So in that sense you mucked up.

Darth vader is Lukes father.

That series doesn't have a major ongoing TV show that is relatively new and sparked interest into growing the fanbase beyond the smaller group of fantasy fans that read the books in the 90s. I hadn't even heard of the series until last year and only now had time to start reading the books.

Spoilers to a popular ongoing series in irrelevant threads is rude imo.

Well OP, that's what I would've done. If it makes you feel any better.

Would have probably explained my reasoning to the secretary before leaving. Probably. Depends on the atmosphere I guess.

Thacker you should read these two books:

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazi.

Good luck OP

I am very careful not to spoil people, but I assumed anything aired on the show is fair game considering the books are so very old. My apologies. Minor characters at least.

To get some ships. Bitches love ships.

I bet it was the best damned peach ever eaten.

Pfft, apologizing for spoiling a decade old book and something that happened early on the even more popular tv show?

Spoiler alert: Romeo and Juilet both die in Romeo and Juliet.

I had an interview to get into maritime training school (as student) I was left in a room waiting for 6 hours before interview. They said after part of personality test, patience. Because at sea long hours doing jack all. I think its a load of crap personally. Had a fun day getting to know people and having a yarn while waiting.

When I had my restaurant dumb asses would come in looking for work in the middle of busiest time. Already know they dont have experience at that point or smarts to realise their chances of landing job are reduced at that point. On the other hand can turn that around by using that as an excuse to help out for an hour for free. Shake my hand and come back for full time next day.

I saw a guy in a bakery today looking for work. They were tidying up and he offered to help. Before that the guy behind counter rolled eyes as if to say sorry about this and tried to dismiss him. After he said that he got a "wait here while I see customer and we will see what we can work out" He was sold

I know its no excuse to those that have to wait. But when you are on the other side you are dealing with all these applicants coming to you. Most are garbage. If you are busy your business is priority. If someone with no job has to wait that may walk out...plenty more fish in the sea. Should be respectful and explain situation and either give new time for interview or ask if can wait though.

I want a job I would have waited. If I have nothing else to do. If I had something else to go to Id notify them and tell them I had reason for leaving then go.

Damn. I work retail right now putting myself through college after four years in the Army.

I basically get treated like that every day. The latest is that we have to show up at 8 AM on sundays for training on service plans if our percentage is under a certain number (the entire store).

Waiting 45 minutes in life for something potentially life changing is a small price to pay. Hopefully you get used to it at some point.

YOU'RE THE REASON WHY MIDDLE CLASS IS DISAPPEARING
STOP WORKING ON SUNDAYS AND START OVERHEARING CONVERSATIONS AND WALKING OUT OF BUILDINGS

Thacker, never ask GAF for their opinion. This is what happens when you do, they are literally trying to rip you a new asshole or two like you shot their wife or mom or something. Just remember that 90 percent of GAF people think they are perfect beings who never make mistakes.

Thanks Burrito

That is sick, and it angers me a great deal you feel such a condescending and judgemental way about someone you've never met, but thanks for your input.

No. I expected the owner to come out and speak to me and talk to me directly, not have his receptionist handle all communication between us.

It's the owner that was playing like he was a big business, not me.

But you never even met...and you sent the email...*backs away slowly*

Sorry to thread derail. I'm over the spoiler thing. I'll just try to finish these books asap. The Internet is a spoiler minefield.

Anyway, no need for me to beat a dead horse. OP, you did not handle this well.

Thacker, never ask GAF for their opinion. This is what happens when you do, they are literally trying to rip you a new one or two like you shot their wife or mom or something. Just remember that 90 percent of GAF people think they are perfect beings who never make mistakes.

Save it. Lumping in GAF typically doesn't go well, but also, there are plenty of people in this thread admitting mistakes just begging, pleading for the OP to admit his. To see the fault and learn from it.

Just like the OP.

Let's stop with the thread derailing GoT stuff and get back to being rightfully flabbergasted at everything Thracker says and does.

Just felt right to let you know. Get yours and screw retail worker abuse.

Pedestal.
Knowing what you're worth is a pedestal?

Do people really wonder why salaries are down across the board? Why the middle class is disappearing and why the wealth inequality in this country continues to grow?

are you really trying to make this into some social cause célèbre? This isn't about friggin wealth inequality and middle class disappearing. It's about one individual making an obscenely silly mistake in a potential job opportunity, overvaluing his own time over others in the process, being so profoundly inept in basic job interview etiquette that you literally walked out without even bothering to ask the assistant what was going on. Because she was too busy?

Think about this for a second. Even if you were right, what does this all say about you?

1. You lack the assertiveness to speak up for yourself and ask an assistant what is going on? Probably poorly follows directions/poor in social situations.

2. You lack the ability to ask for instructions or learn how the interview process was going to work. Probably would have a tough time following basic guidelines for projects you'd be working on. Probably would lack the social graces to ask if he didn't know the answer.

3. You're incredibly insulting to others merely by the tone of your attitude. I mean that letter of yours is truly remarkable. You're basically telling the guy your time is worth more than his, in about as nails-on-chalkboard a way as possible. The guy was practically a saint how he responded back to you. More than even walking out of the interview, this letter suggests you're probably currently incapable of being apart of a functional work group.

4. You KEEP defending the wrong, trying to say you had some gut feeling or some shit, rather than saying "you know what, i'm young, I really needed this job, I fucked up. On the next job interview I'm going to ace this shit. Thanks NeoGAF for the advice!" I can't even list the number of ways this attitude alone would fuck you in the long term for any decent job.

I am aware. As upset as some of the comments make me, I tend to get over it quick. You can tell a lot about people by what they let others get away with... and we seem to have some very submissive "men" on GAF.

I blame the milk. All them hormones and estrogen.

But, look at this thread. Most of this thread is post after post of you guys insulting him. Would you like for me to start quoting insulting Thacker?

You sure know this "GAF" guy huh.

He can do whatever he wants.

If he was a friend of mine, after hearing his whining about all of this I would've slapped him hard. That's all.

Guys we are at the account suicide moment just give it a few minutes.

Arguing GoT in an unrelated thread is as useless as nipples on a breastplate.

oh god I'm so sorry please forgive me I had to

It's incredibly tough to try and even remotely defend you when you make comments like this. You're going to get a big wake up call in life one of these days. Hope you can handle it

ah k, so this is a troll thread.
Man, we could've saved so much time if you had just said so before.

I love the hyperbole, yeah GAF disagreeing with someone acting foolishly and going on to defend the foolishness is GAF being a typically asshole besides the fact that people on here are generally very nice and supportive. Save your breath.

What else is someone supposed to do with all that time when they're unemployed?

Nobody ever said they were perfect, nobody ever said they didn't make mistakes ... nice try though ... OP asked for advice/comments about his situation ... a plethora of reasonable comments and advice was doled out ...

Oh, my, god. Seriously? You think being..waiting on another human being who's offering you opportunity is being submissive?

....and you're blaming milk? MILK?

Okay, wait. Wait.

You are not only pretending that being asked to wait 30 minutes to finish a test and fill out paperwork is an insult and doing so would be being 'weak', you are now also saying it isn't 'manly' to do so, and blaming estrogen and therefore saying it's 'womanly' and 'weak'.

Seriously?

I appreciate it but honestly it's not that bad. I work with some pretty cool people. And in a year it'll be all over and I'll have a decent enough resume.

Living in Northern VA though it won't be anything special.

I'm not trying to pile on the guy but I would have camped out in that guys office for a week with bread and water for the shot at a 70k/year office job.

I am fully aware of the difference and the middle ground. I would not have acted this way had other red flags not presented themselves. Two techs leaving... the receptionist being obviously overworked and upset about it, the extremely quick hiring process... the fact someone was interviewing right before me for the position that had only been posted two days.

There were red flags, and making me wait without acknowledgment is what pushed me over. If this place seemed like a great place to work I would have gladly set there longer but the other factors leading up to this interview did NOT give that impression in anyway shape or form.
Could 25% of their tech staff leaving have contributed to the receptionist being overworked, having to conduct a quick hiring process, bringing in multiple candidates for multiple positions, and the owner having to do some client work in between interviews?

Look, it was rude and unprofessional of them to give you such little attention while you waited, but it was also unprofessional of you to come in a quarter of an hour early, expect them to service you, and then abandon the interview after wasting their time for the test when you knew they were in crisis mode.

Why did the other techs leave? You'll never know.
What's their turnover rate? You'll never know.
Did you pass their test? You'll never know.
Were they willing to accept your refusal to provide references and salary history because they were so impressed by your resume? You'll never know.
Why was the receptionist overworked? You'll never know.
Why did they make you wait so long? You'll never know.
What's the normal workplace atmosphere? You'll never know.
How much overtime did they expect? You'll never know.
Would the company have exploited you? You'll never know.
Were your first impressions accurate? You'll never know.

With no risk of anything besides being a little jumpy in the interview and hitting rush hour traffic, you threw away an opportunity to get more information about a potential job opportunity. That kind of willful ignorance is mockable.

And stop comparing an unexpected wait time to forced sexual acts, it's insulting and dismissive. Even in 'Murica.

I blame the milk. All them hormones and estrogen.
Ah yes, that damned foreign substance introduced into our precious bodily fluids, am I right?

And this is a really ballsy statement to make about being submissive based on what you got in trouble for which made it hard for you to get a job in the first place

Again with the extremes.

Edit: oh I see you've been banned. Maybe now you can find the time to look for jobs.

Now I"m 100% convinced it was a troll.

Willing to wager the Milk/Estrogen comment was sarcasm.

In the OPs position: having to wait that long when you're scheduled for an interview at a set time, it's kind of bullshit. The employer should've at least had some courtesy to give an idea when they would be doing, or possibly apologetically rescheduling it. The condescending email was a bad idea though.

OP is going to end up with an even better job in like 2 weeks time and post a gloat thread.

Then GAF will assplode and I will eat it up.

On the topic of "are some things not worth doing, even if you need the money?" I'm going to vote yes. I can't claim the impoverished background of some posters, but I have been through some pretty lean times in my life. Each of those times, there was a possibility of eating shit to get by, but I always chose not to, even though it was scary, and in retrospect I am happy with all of those decisions.
