I used a lv2 harrier and scored pretty well in a room full of 1600-1800 people...
Beside, it's the CUTEST plane.

Every plane can be the cutest plane when Namco delivers with a new set of iDOLM@STER skins :)

So is this game any good? Is the monetization fair or do you have to spend money to be competitive?

I'm a huge fan of the old Ace Combat games but I remember people were not receptive to it when it was revealed to be free-to-play.

The monetization is pretty bad, but not really limiting competitiveness of players other than restricting play time. If you want to play you might want to consider buying the campaign pass and playing through the campaign to get 20 stocked fuel. With those 20 stocked fuel you'd be able to play more of the multiplayer than the 3 supplied fuel that get refreshed every three hours per unit. If you don't get the unlimited campaign play pass you'd have to spend fuel to play the missions and unlock them with credits that would take a long time to grind.

Oh wow, I didn't even know it had a campaign. Thought it was all out multiplayer. It has throwbacks to the old games right?

Yeah it does have some references to the older games, it is not set in Strangereal though. The campaign has five missions right now and three more will be added later at an unspecified date.

I wish I had the discipline to level my Phantom like you guys but after my first taste of Frogfoot it was over.

I've played a lot and have had tons of fun. I haven't spent a dime and I have about 12 stacked fuel right now. I do about 4-5 sorties a day, with one of them being a stacked one.

The campaign pass will be mine on payday though.

The road to 1st LT is ghastly.

Almost at my 50th mission now. Still got 9 levels to go.

I only just started playing this a few days ago, it's just as good as I remember the PS2 Ace Combats. I'm so rusty tough, I'm only averaging like 18k score with the Tomcat and just got to Second Lieutenant.

Is the damage from the MG also affected by the plane type?

I'm pretty sure it isn't. I've found that doing the finishing touches with MG fire is pretty much the same across the board. It could possibly be really, really minute - but I can't tell the difference.

I know that there's an additional gun pod that can be equipped to certain attacker craft though. Also, each planes is angled a bit differently.

Edit: Got dat Jester Emblem thoooooooo

I think its more of Ammo count for the Attackers is quite high.

How did you get it?
Luck lol

I got it after a normal run at the Pipeline. Got an A if that makes any difference. It still makes me look cooler than most

Saw someone with an 8492 today too. Cried a lil bit. srs

You got in one of those boxes in the end of the mission?

And yeah I saw some people with some really cool emblems.

Third from the bottom for me is Special Weapons.

I'm assuming it's a rank unlock at some point maybe?

Also, as an aside, is there a way to influence what gets experience in the tree at the end of a mission? It seems somewhat randomized.

Sorry for the idiot questions, just started tonight.

Its two above the playstation store stuff. Change Nickname.

And yeah, it is randomized - you can sorta focus your efforts down a certain path by not upgrading anything outside of a path you want.

IT is a rank unlock though. 2nd LT gets you nicknames

Ah, not that far along to unlock it I guess then. Gonna be stuck with this goofy basic nick for a while then I suppose.

Thanks!

Finally hit 1st Lt. Think it took over 50 games. This game has a great way of hitting me with a special mission each time I tell myself its the last game.
Moby Dick 1 emblem is my favorite so far. Saw someone with the 2nd version earlier.
I've never even seen the 2nd version.

Edit: First LT has 60 levels lol...

Ugh just saw some of the Lv3 plane nicknames, some pretty lame ones.
"F-2 Aficionado"
"A-10 Maniac"
"Harrier Pilot"

I saw one guy with a nickname "Pixy of the lake". I have to get that one, it might be for Morgan lvl 3.

Also, sorry Skwerl for sucking a bit near the end when we played, I was pretty tired :)

Worse feeling ever. Having to leave a lobby right as is gets to Moby Dick. Oh well tomorrow night I will be up trying to get the A-10 or F-2.

OK I admit that I was a bit wrong about with my initial dismissal regarding this game.

Ace Combat Infinity ate up quite a bit of my weekend. Enough to earn me the Morgan, at least.

Here are some quick bullet thoughts.

Pros:
  1. No DFM or other stupid crap from Assault Horizon. Just the graphics engine and some reused level assets.
  2. An interesting concept for loot drops.
  3. And an interesting concept for unlocking planes and parts.
  4. Solid netcode - so far.
  5. The missions are relatively short and that is a good thing.
  6. Enough challenge. At least taking on Moby Dick is a challenge - if only against the clock.
  7. The Supplied Fuel ticker is not overly punishing. I can live with that.
And cons:
  1. The infinite grind. I guess that's where the name comes from.
  2. Veiled booster DLCs. How I hate those.
  3. Grind for better planes is appalling.
  4. Stupid players. I saw guys who couldn't even break the 4000 score barrier. I saw guys smashing to the ground with every second dive. Learn to fly in the properly quick tutorial or get off my team.
  5. Not enough variety with plane skins. 2 skins per plane? 3? I want real customization.
  6. Standard control scheme is a joke and should be disabled once the players outgrow Warrant Officer.
  7. Shortest campaign mode - ever. Well, you get it for free, but still.
  8. Murky graphics. I would gladly download thrice the gigabytes if the game looked better.
  9. No memorable music contrary to every mainstay AC game.
But the worst bit about the game requires its own separate section:
  1. Worst fucking menu design in the history of Ace Combat games. I mean, what were they thinking? Menus within menus within menus within menus. Horribly slow to open and close. Impossible to follow. Post-game rewards take more time than playing the damn missions. Incomprehensible experience counters. Aircraft Set customization is downright horrible. The challenge menus are abysmally bad. To see your challenge progress you need to dig into the menus again. It's like stabbing myself in the foot with a fork. I cannot fathom that this is coming from the legacy of such über-awesome menus like I saw in Ace Combat Zero and even in Ace Combat 6.
Overall though - with a few patches and some more DLC, this could be a great little game. It seems they intend to lock some popular planes (Su-47, Shinden) behind either a paywall or some manner of special challenge.

Assault Horizon got ported to PC and this makes me wonder - how hard would it be for Namco to port Infinity over to the PS4. An increased resolution and better shader effect could make the game look better. Plus it's F2P - which seems to thrive on PS4.

For now, I will keep playing the game until I unlock at least some of the better Russian fighters. But I fret that the player base will abandon this game very, very quickly. Good luck finding a game with 7 people after two months...

I don't care about Namco's gouging DLC prices. Those are never nice.

$$$
If you could go crazy on the colors less people would care about DLC skins you know are coming.
To tell the truth im surprised the F-2 even has its JSDF scheme.

My F14 needs a better skin asap though.

eh... I can't hate on the standard control scheme. If you fly bombers a lot, there's simply no replacement for it. You obliterate with standard during strafing runs.

Its grindy - but its MMO grindy. So if you're used to any kind of MMO type experience or F2P experience (ME3 MP is actually sort of in the same boat), then you'll get used to it quick.

The campaign is coming in bunches, obviously. But uh... the music is remixed and touched up from all of the previous AC games. Which is pretty damned awesome for me at least.

Skins are going to be lol. I can't wait to see how Namco decides to milk us for them.

I think there definitely needs to be more game modes. Not talking PVP, but some pure aerial stages like B7R, canyon runs, Co-op 4 vs Galm, even some escort here and there. I know its early and it'll come soon but... it'd be nice. The netcode is good, but weird. I've yet to have any problems at all, but it says that my connection/ping is poor for long periods of time when I know it isn't and there are times when I have to restart my PS3 just to join.

The booster items... well, shit, a lot of the stuff you'd expect to pay for are basically thrown at you threw challenges. And using stocked fuel increases your chances of getting stocked fuel too - so you'll be supporting yourself quite a bit just by doing simple stuff.

I'm not liking how much better multirole fighters seem to be compared to everything else though. I figured I'd stop at the E/A-18E and just focus my research towards the Fighter tree in the meantime but my Mig-29 doesn't seem to really come close at all to it in overall effectiveness. I'd wish to at least see a MAJOR advantage of flying Fighter or Attacker instead of Multirole but that's not the case at all really (Those trees unlock important parts and special weapons but the planes themselves... well... you'd think there would be something else to it). You can do anything the mission sends your way on a whim.

The way that planes upgrade kinda throws me through a loop too because of the menu not describing progressions clear enough. Way too much wait and see.

I'm really just rambling at this point, but overall I absolutely love the game and the money I've put into it (significantly less than 60 bucks so far) has been very much worth it. Time will tell if that stays true though. As an AC fan, this is great.

Wow. Just wow at that Warthog price tag.

I wonder how much the PAK-FA costs then... A million?

Also, the 10,000,000 trophy is bullshit. Fuck that noise.

I don't see the game as a grind at all, I genuinely enjoy the game and don't worry about upgrades, they just come or not, whatever, the gameplay is the focus of any game and here it is just perfect.

There will be dlc skins but also a lot of random drop ones. They force players to pay and play to get the random drop skins so they win either way since it looks better when they are offering the skins "free".

I really hope so, they only time I take a fighter is when I don't care as much about score or going against Aigaion.
For the 1st time today I noticed a lag, when the mission started everyone else was ahead of me, but after that no problems.

Fighters are faster, and that is one of the most important aspects in this game. If you get to the target 1st then you usually score it too. Also, fighters deal more damage to planes and attackers more damage to ground targets.

The way that planes upgrade kinda throws me through a loop too because of the menu not describing progressions clear enough. Way too much wait and see.

Research is random, I am pretty sure about that.

I've done what I can to support Ace Combat and got the three packs (plus one fighter set extension so I can have 8 loadouts instead of 4).

It amounts to a bit under what I would have paid for a regular retail game on Amazon or the like.

So far, I have played a LOT of matches (I'm not far from 1st Lieutenant) and the fuel from the packs, plus the campaign bonus, plus some challenges, plus some drops from using stocked fuel in sorties, i'm at around 30 stocked units.

My good will towards the game might take a hit once I run out of fuel, though. The waiting period is terrible.

Sad thing is that it probably won't.
You get just enough of a bite every once in a while and it just makes you want it even more.
I'd pay a bit for an extended Supplied Fuel Tank.

Say, 6 units instead of 3. This would mean that I play every second or third day, but for a longer time. 3 units of supplied fuel is barely enough to get warmed up.
