If a random unmarked car stopped near my broken-down vehicle at some ungodly hour you can bet I'll be armed and dangerous. Idiot cop now took a life while the police department stammers out a justification.

People will die as long as it's worse for the cop to leave them alive. When they can take care of a "problem" with no negative consequences to themselves, why would anything change?

Sigh. Is shooting unarmed black people a weekly tradition in America or something?

Weekly? It's far worse than that.

This dumb fuck really couldn't turn his lights on? Paid vacation, he finally has time to finish MGS V. Clear your backlog, that's the reward for killing black folk.

These sort of secret cops are bullshit. If the cop is going to do police business, he should have to identify himself.

Yep, if they are doing undercover work in unmarked vehicles they should not be doing normal cop work, trying to hide to catch people speeding to pull them over and such. Real undercover work. This just makes it easy for criminals to pretend to be cops to get your daughter or son to pull over to kidnap them or rob them without a struggle as they would think they are actual cops. No one could resist since it actually might be a cop, it's really blurring the lines.

Daily. It happens daily now.

The thing is, ESPECIALLY in the state this happened in, if a police officer says they felt "reasonable fear" to warrant lethal force, even if it was imagined or non-existent, they are protected by law.

This cop is going to walk free and we all know he killed an innocent man.

American here. What do you suggest I do?

I find this disgusting, but protesting police actions puts a target on your head. =/
Police exist to serve and protect.

We need police to protect us from the police...

Can someone please explain why is police in USA so trigger-happy? 780 people killed by police in just one year (not even whole year) is just crazy. If the police really have to shoot, can't they just shoot the suspect in the legs or arms - just to disarm the person but not outright kill him or her?
Because of fear mongering videos and presentations at the academies of traffic stops gone wrong and the like. Also, in a country where anyone and everyone can easily acquire a gun, they have to approach every situation as though they may be dealing with an armed fugitive. It's a terrible culture of fear. Doesn't help that because of suburbanization a lot of cops serve communities they don't actually live in or interact with otherwise

Do the US police even get any training?

Dont they have to identify themselves and show ID anymore?

Are they legally allowed to just pull their gun and shoot at any time?

But this line of thinking only works if you ignore all of the good things police do: stopping crimes, arresting criminals, protecting people, resolving situations and so on. I know it grabs headlines to report when they do something wrong, or shoot the wrong person (and I'm not defending that at all!), but I'm sure they good the police force does for individuals and for society at large far outweighs the bad things. To blanket call them "scum" and compare them to a criminal gang is just fucking stupid.
Every time they do something wrong and shoot the wrong person, people die, and lives are ruined by public servants we are supposed to be able to rely on to protect and help and serve us. Whether you are a criminal or not, encountering the police should not end up being a bad thing for you. It should lead to better things.

Im sure its just a matter of time when its revealed that the musician had a minimal amount of weed on his system so that the majority of americans can use this arbitrary fact to justify in their eyes the death of another american (but not quite) human being (but not quite). Some might even get their feelings hurt about phrases like "police are gangs" or "black lives matter" but will not get that this frustration they feel its because they know that something was wrong with the killing, but taking a closer look means facing certain realities that benefict them.

Maybe he was plotting a "Knockout King" attack... Shadownet seems terrified about those.

I've never interacted with him much before seeing that thread, but it still creeps me out someone relatively prominent in Gaming side, and who I've known of for a while, could have such views without anyone knowing.

I mean, you know intellectually that there are people who don't value, or actively detest, your life and the lives of others who look like you, but occasionally it just becomes more noticeable. A part of me just assumes everyone is fucked up on this site until there's evidence otherwise, and I hate that I ever feel that way.

Guns are deadly weapons. Their only function is to kill and they can't be effectively used for non-lethal assaults.

Note that I am not defending the cop's decision to kill a man in any way.

Shoot to disable is not a thing outside of the movies. You're trained to shoot center mass, and try to stop the target from being a threat at all. Hence police shootings generally involving a lot of bullets fired and one very dead guy, unless it's one of those incidents where they empty their clip and still miss.

In other countries there are numerous instances of cops shooting to injure. Shooting only to kill is some American nonsense that gets thrown around far too much here.

The country the NRA and its supporters have always wanted. They want that culture of fear to persist so they can make more money and gain even more political power. Business is good when people are dying.

And they've successfully convinced many citizens that this is the America they want too. Some definitely post on here...

Twice a day every day, although not everyone cops kills is black just the vast majority.

(Honestly this whole thing is so sad and depressing, I can't imagine what growing up black in the USA must feel like.)

What a fucking stupid country America is. When are you going to wake up and smell the coffee.

Is it me, or are we getting stories like this multiple times a week now?

Yep. Reporting has increased. Actual occurrances haven't. Back in the day officer just said "He attacked me". This story was believed and that's that. News outlets not giving a shit. Not a story anyone cares about. The end.

Anyone in their right mind would have a gun/any weapon out at that point. If I were in a broken down car and someone was creeping up I'd have a weapon out for sure.

Why are American so afraid, it can't possible be this dangerous, that you have to have your gun out and ready as soon as the sun goes down. I can not count the number of times I've just pulled my car to the side of the road and went to sleep. I've never even considered someone "creeping up on me". You guys make it sound like the streets of America resemble the zombie apocalypse, expect the zombies are non-white people that are all out to kill you.

I was gonna say when white people get killed in the hundreds by cops. Then I found this:

So probably never. :(

Few details have been released about the Oct. 18 shooting — which is one of more than 780 fatal police shootings so far in 2015, according to a Washington Post database of all deadly on-duty shootings by police officers in 2015.

You have a problem, USA.

*non-poor white people. The Kelly Thomas trial going the way it did, despite that fucking terrible video being played for the jury, was very telling. We've got no shot until cops fuck up and start killing people with money.

Hey, what did the black guy do wrong this time, Shadownet?

Probably thought he was going to play the Knockout Game.

A friend of mine showed me an article about a white family getting beat by a group of 20-30 african-american teenagers unprovoked.

I was shocked by this.

I did some more research on other stories and i'm just terrified of what's been happening.

Multiple instances of people going around and blindly punching and in some case killing unsuspecting innocents.

The scariest thing is that while the media cover the Ferguson and Baltimore events. Most of these never got the same level of attention.

Only certain gangs in the US can get away with that sort of activity, don't you know?

Alright there, calm down kid.

Is he wrong?

You expect criminal gangs to be up to some evil bullshit. You don't, or rather you SHOULDN'T expect the same evil bullshit from the ones who are supposedly paid to protect us from some evil bullshit.

???

lol?

To be totally honest, and I'm probably being sexist here... but I'm a chick and if a dude was creeping up at 3am I'd be terrified. I'd be worried if it was a woman, too, but definitely a dude.

Also, if that dude has a gun, and my car is broken (I can't escape), then it's not fight or flight, it's going to be me protecting myself.

& I would never pull off to the side of a highway and sleep. That's just asking for trouble. I'm even hesitant to do so in my uni's parking lot and I live in OC.

Ok that makes a little more sense, I can understand its different for a women.

I think what's become the most appalling element of this CRAP for me is that the justification is always the same... the very same... BS. The victim attempted to violently assault the officer, so the officer shot him dead.

Like... when is the (white and/or disbelieving and/or approving and/or ignoring) public at large going to say "you know what, this is the 50th time I've heard this same story, but I find it hard to believe that black people instinctively try to murder (even undercover!) police officers, especially considering that their lives are endangered by mere proximity to 'law enforcement'?"

The government clearly doesn't give a single shit, either. It's almost like bad fiction.

I understand the rationale, but I am completely against plain-clothes officers/vehicles. How the fuck am I supposed to tell that this unmarked car that just pulled up to me with a plain-clothes guy wielding a gun is actually police. I think most people will notice a gun before they notice a police badge. Beyond that, I don't want to take their word that they are a cop when they yell "police". Who's to say they aren't some serial killer or psychopath just doing that to get another helpless victim.

IMO, plain-clothes officers should only be allowed to go undercover and should only be able to use force if they come across a legitimate threat to their life DURING THEIR CASE. They should not be allowed to make traffic stops or routine law enforcement in plain clothes.

To my knowledge, a pistol is not a reliable weapon to use to accurately and consistently disarm or disable a person without killing them. However, even if you are correct, police are notoriously inaccurate and have enough difficulty hitting the individual at all, let alone a specific body part. FBI statistics suggest police accuracy of 30% at the high end.

This was Corey Jones. Just depressing to read about him. His friends, family and coworkers said he was one of the funniest and most humble guys. That he loved playing the drums, his friend Matthew even said that they were just musicians, they weren't violent. Imagine that, having your car break down, and rather than get help, you are shot and killed.

Man seeing these pictures kills me

:(

RIP Corey Jones
