That was the first episode that actually attempted (and mostly succeeded at) more than a half-assed attempt at world-building. Pretty solid, I thought.

Same here, thought it was decent. Finally got some world building.

I hope they give the "standing next to something exploding" origin a rest. I don't want to see Whirlwind get introduced by an exploding hair dryer.

Good episode. The show just needs to spend more time off that plane and interacting with the bigger world, even if it's not directly with major superheroes/villains.

Preview for the next episode looks pretty terrible, though.

I agree, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so. I'm mixed on the concept of gigantic colleges full of SHIELD agents/trainees, but I guess after the trailer for Cap 2 showing fleets of helicarriers it makes some sense. More interesting here was some resolution of Skye's arc so far, and the repercussions of Coulson's reveal from last week; not just him brooding about it, but notice how he was the one to tell them to stop resuscitating the kid. They also set up another interesting villain and some new plot threads. Good episode all around, an improvement for sure. Hopefully this show can pick up some more.

Watching the episode right now and it was enjoyable and even somewhat competent until it got to Fitz and that one kid. Fitz stated that to cool the battery you could figure out a way to let more oxygen into it. The kid's response: "Wow, it's true what they say. You're the smartest guy around!"

Now I'm at the pool scene, and it doesn't seem like it's getting better.

"Pretty nice shot"
"You mean for a girl."

UGH. Hoping it gets better.

Edit: Finished it, dialogue was wack as usual, but now I wanna know what happened to Skye and what powers she has. Fine Agents of SHIELD, I'll keep watching.

I hope they don't forget that the storm was still raging in future episodes

Bah, little things.

Good show, enjoyed it, but damn teh waiting for new episodes. Wish I had a boiler room in college like that. Ours was in teh basement, but filled with overworked and schitzo design students whoring out on photoshop.....

They kind already are. Being bank rolled by the same guy to build doomsday shit.

True enough. I still hope that at least the metahuman villains do their own thing. So far none of them have been aware of working for the same guy, so now that they're getting powers they could just go cause havok independently.

That wall of dead agents was really small considering how many students there were in that place, and how often Helicarriers go down.

Im starting think this is my personal worst show of all time(not quality wise though)

I dislike this show -> watches episode anyway -> episode was ok or meh -> it might eventually get better -> I really don't enjoy this show -> watches next episode
-> eh, next week looks better -> Im going to delete it, I don't enjoy it -> but what if this is the episode that really kicks into gear -> watches episode -> .....

Why am I so hooked on it, Coulson is still the only thing I like about it.

So just me or did they just try and pull a Grace Chen deal with it joke at the end with her putting the sunglasses on?

One thing that irked me.

If you notice on the wall, it has agents that have died all the way up to the year 2015.

Avengers took place in 2012, and the first episode within a year of that. I'm supposed to believe that THREE YEARS have passed since?

Incredibly minor, but huge wtf moment to me.

These are clearly the words of a man who has never seen dexter.

At this point, I honestly don't know what the fandom expects from the show that is within the realm of reason.

I would like to know more about the villains. There are already 3 organisations, and we barely know anything about them. Flesh more characters out, not just the main characters. Hell even some of them are not fully fleshed out. If you watch Arrow, you would see how the fans love the show because it has a tight plot, and great characters and good character development. Honestly the cast of Shield feels flat to me. I don´t care about any of the characters. I want them to make me care. It raises the stakes makes the show much better and i would rather not tie up this series with every Avenger movie out there.

You're saying time travel isn't an option in an universe with gods, monsters, aliens and monstergodaliens?

I don't want to make it a comparison, since I only watched 8 episodes so far, but thus far it's kind of simiarly episodic with bits of characters and plot making their way through the series, much like AoS.

As for the villains, it seems obvious they are going to get to them. They're taking their sweet time about it, but since that time is generally spent developing the main cast, I don't have a problem with it so far.

As for emotional investment, no one can 'make' anyone care about anything. You have to let it happen. It's always strange to me when people blame the show for their detachment to what are clearly sympathetic occurrences happening. If you're constantly questioning whether or not you care about the characters, it's generally not going to happen, since you're immediately thinking of them as show characters and not people, so the wall of separation is always going to be there. The situations shown are sympathetic. It's up to care. But if you don't, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It shouldn't be considered a strong indicator of writing quality.

Yeah same here. Couple months at most it seemed went by....

The girl from Ravenswood was in this episode. Lol. Dat Disney synergy.

Arrow really kicked off around 14 I think.
season 2 is almost pure serial.

Im not asking for it to be as good as Arrow I just want it to use the Marvel brand.
Right now Coulson is the only thing pushing the show imo everything else is so bland.
Even then Coulson isn't near as enjoyable as he was in the movies.

If Arrow can be allowed to get that far in with it's episodic nature, then I don't see why AoS has been criticized for it since 3.

I will agree with this much: They need to bring in more super powered people. Everything has been rather low key on that front and they've hyped up more than a few supers by now. But I'm not that annoyed since I believe they are getting there. It's when the series ends that I am going to throw my tomatos if we still dont get that.

While i agree with your points, there´s a big difference between AoS and Arrow. Shield is an already established organisation in the Marvel movies. We already know what they do, that´s why i find AoS to be a very slow moving plot. Developing 2-3 characters of the main cast is good, but it´s moving way too slowly for me.

If they would've set up like a back-and-forth rivalry between SHIELD and a villain organization (with its own characters and development) that could've been something REALLY special.

Kinda like a CIA vs KGB type situation.

Not necessarily. The divisions are just 24 year increments. 41 to 65, 66 to 90 and 91 to 2015. It was just the end cap for that panel. If someone dies before 2015, the symbol goes on that section. They could've shown the next blank panel that said 2016 - 2040 but that doesn't mean it's 2040.

I'm only about 9 episodes into Arrow myself but I think there's been way more plot progression here than in the first 10 episodes of AoS.

SHIELD episodes are mostly self-contained stories with the only tiniest of threads spreading from one to the next, but I think there's been a good deal of serial backstory in what I've seen of Arrow so far.

Arrow just blasts through storylines and I love it for it. They could have easily dragged the is "Ollie the vigilante?" plot thread throughout the season, but they nipped in the bud early on in one episode.

The writers on SHIELD feel like they're taking it for granted that they're on the air.

Because the episodic plots were still good, and they were already building a serialized plot. They started in episode 1 with the list and the flashbacks, elements that came back each episode around the villain of the week plot.

I expect Whedon-acolytes to get there eventually, but it's also the philosophy of Marvel TV, especially in their animation department. Supposedly there's a heavy mandate on accessibility which translates to "less serial."

Yep, Jeph Loeb will kill t before it can ever get off the ground. Marvel animation is an abortion.

Best episode so far, I really liked how they handled the Donnie character. There was great characterisation in his scenes. They need to explore the different Shield divisions a bit more, theres potential there.

Much improved episode from previous efforts, hopefully it means they are taking the criticisms to heart and addressing them regularly.
