So Ward is a straight up murderer of innocent people now?

I really have no idea what they could possibly do with that character now, the fact that he shot an innocent, crippled, defenseless man will forever haunt the viewers. That's why I'm guessing on him working for the Oracle, but that would be a silly ass pull.

They're probably going with the he-loves-skye angle to justify his actions. They specifically focused on the way he looks at Skye during her receiving of the SHIELD badge and other instances I believe.

It would be incredibly annoying if they completely skips the mental anguish he should be feeling over shooting an innocent man in cold blood.

So.... episode had it moments.

But I'm really considering stopping watching the show if I see any hint that showrunners will not severely punish Ward for doing what he did. If they continue treating Ward as "likable warrior that is showing his emotional side", they are just proving that they think we are all idiots.

Fuck that. There is no way out, no "clairvoyant knew how to pull strings" to excuse what was done.

When Agent Paxton said not too be too hard on Ward, that was really silly. This is a government/military organization. He shot and killed the target and the orders were to apprehend. This is not high school where a teacher can give you a pass if you beg, he disobeyed orders and shot the target when the target was clearly not going anywhere. I think that is the main issue, the fact that, after the fact, the target was probably innocent and a dupe, just makes things a lot worse.

Well when Ward figures it out, he's going to feel pretty shitty.

The NY Mag review had a great note about Garrett:
Having Bill Paxton as a guest star has given Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a nice little shot of energy, but his John Garrett was a little too chummy with everybody in tonight's episode. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could really benefit from a morally questionable, Jack Bauer-ish kind of agent, and Garrett's introduction feels a missed opportunity to slip some genuine tension into the ranks.
This is more inline with what I was expecting.

I always understood his chumminess as doing that very thing without resorting to serious do-anything-for-the-mission frown-face-man (Who is represented by Melinda May in this show already). He is always non-chalant because he has no qualms whatsoever about doing anything that is necessary. He seems borderline psychopath to me, which I think works pretty well.

Yup. Knowing what kind of organization SHIELD is he's pretty in line. Also, watch TWS ;)

Yep, still can't stop laughing.

Marvel.com: When you had that conversation with the producers, what was their pitch to you?

Patrick Brennan: This is the way they explained it to me:
This guy, Marcus Daniels, a.k.a. Blackout, was shrouded in darkness, his soul, everything about him was shrouded in darkness until he comes across this Cello player. And the music was the only light that came into his soul, and it gave him hope and it gave him some sense of what light was. I thought to myself, oh my god, you don’t even need to explain anything else. Because music, to me, is what gets me through most of the time. My kids, my wife, and music. That aspect of it totally intrigued me. I thought that was quite beautiful and very interesting, that aspect of the character.

well, I think this is the first time I can say: damn, that was good. While I liked some previous episodes (6, 7, 12 and 13 especially), this is the first one I can safely consider above the rest. And considering I've already watched The Winter Soldier, some things already make sense and others... well, looks like I'll have to wait until next week to see how it unfolds, considering what happens in TWS.

The Winter Soldier SPOILERS
so The Clairvoyant has to be Zola, right? It makes too much sense for them to just ignore it.

If the next 6 episodes are this good (or better), I'm all in.

It has to.
His algorythm is what The Clairvoyant claims to do, predict people that are special and terminate them
Can't wait for next week.

Really great episode. The last few episodes really nailed it despite the breaks. It finally starts to be a show about SHIELD and not just Coulson's team. Well, if I had to guess I'd say that the Clairvoyant has already appeared but I can't think of either Garett or Hand as him/her. Maybe Sitwell, even though he didn't play a big role in this episode. Of course, he may be a high ranking (ex) shield agent or something.

Oh, I bet my avatar that someone from Phil's team is indeed corrupt. Ward's act was very suspicious and his discussion with Coulson was a bit weird. May probably works with Fury as many said. Traitor but not like Ward.

As for Deathlok, just make him less human. That xray footage was badass.

I need to see Cap 2 immediately...

Honestly, I would not be surprised if after the film, people would expect exactly that, and Whedon throws us a curveball and it ends up being something entirely different.

If done well, I wouldn't complain. However, this series has been more misses than hits for me, even if it has been slowly improving every week... I think I have the right to remain a bit skeptical of the end result if what you said were to happen.

So what's the deal with TWS spoilers in this thread next week? How's that gonna work?
I'd say it's pretty well known that the two are tied. If you haven't seen Cap by next Tuesday you shouldn't watch the show until you have, and if you haven't watched the show, you shouldn't be in here. (Though spoiler tags are a nice courtesy)

But of course, I'm not a mod so who knows what the rules are gonna be?

I'll personally steer clear of the thread starting Friday anyway, just to be on the safe side...

Is watching The Winter Soldier crucial to my enjoyment of the show for episode 17 onwards? I have not gone to see a movie in theaters for years, and I do not really want to do it for this

Also, the UK is still only up to episode 14 (this Friday) - even though The Winter Soldier had its International launch on March 26.

Everything is screwed with with the timeline outside America.

The last interview I read said that they try to make the tie-ins so that it's not mandatory. It's part of their philosophy of trying to appeal to as wide a group of people as possible. But that if you do watch the movies, there's more that you'll understand or recognize.

Yes.

Saying anything beyond that will spoil Winter Soldier for you.

Thanks to both.

That seems like it might work. My local theater is a horrible place, and I will not enjoy even the best movie in the world in that place. It ruined a few great movies in the past.

In an ideal world, I'd love to catch up on The Winter Soldier come its Blu Ray release - the other option is to do a few hour round trip to watch film in a decent establishment. That is a bit of a hassle though - although maybe it is worth it for these weird circumstances.

So what's the deal with TWS spoilers in this thread next week? How's that gonna work?
Let me think about it and talk to a few people that have seen the movie. Obviously, all TWS spoilers should be tagged and marked before next Tuesdays episode, but we'll have to see what should be done after that. My gut feeling is that we probably won't have a TWS free-for-all in here at that point, but I'll figure something out that hopefully makes sense.

I'm real cagey on what I can say here RE: The Winter Soldier tie in. My biggest fear is spoiling the movie for people by accident; even in the OT I posted a jokey spoiler (with tags and a warning before it) and people still clicked it and were saddened.

So, if next episode or maybe the one after that happen concurrently with winter soldier movie. I wonder if we get to hear
captain America's speech, or when alexander pierce says captain america is a fugitive, get order to capture captain america
. Can't imagine coulson will be okay with that

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
My guess is that the show won't spoil the movie explicitly for those who haven't seen it, except that any SHIELD-relevant events will be seen/explained by the characters to some extent. Judging by the trailers, I'd expect a lot of confusion and "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON" levels of panic going around as the team tries to piece together what's happening.

It's already started with May and Hand and the fact that Simmons got cut off on her phone call with Fitz after saying "wtf shit is going down over here"

She'll be protected by Triplett.

"protected"

God, she wants him bad.

She has a thing for black guys, poor Fitz!

Well you heard why they call him "Triplett" right.
They say he has a third leg ;)

And tonight's episode, along with the spoilerish comments regarding its connection to Captain America 2, had me extra hyped to watch that movie this weekend. Not that I needed to be more HYPED.

So if the Clairvoiant turns out to be (TWS Spoilers)
Zola (which makes too much sense to not be it), how are they going to handle it in the Series?
Opening Shot, Coulson in front of his team: Wow, I didn't see that coming. The clairvoiant turned out to be this swiss Nazi/Hydra Scientist that put his conciousnes into a 1960's supercomputer. Luckily he was taken out during that whole hydra uprising thingy last week. So what are we going to do today?

Damn looks like I need to bail out of this thread already with all the TWS spoilers flying around. Can you guys at least wait till it's out here in the states?

Regardless of who Clairvoyant is (I haven't seen TWS, so I have no idea), if May isn't actually involved, that plot line will need to be addressed.

He didn't know that guy was (potentially) innocent. And he was most likely ordered to do so, while also being manipulated by they real clairvoyant.

Seriously after they straight up murdered those guards a few episodes ago? I'm waiting for all of them to burn. I thought that was why Victoria showed up on the plane.

Funny thing about that is that they may have been more on the side of the "good guys" considering the Clairvoyant and his cronies had no idea that place even existed.

Fair point, but Coulson identified themselves and their intentions before entering the base so I'm going to count it as self defense.

Oh I don't really care about those dudes' deaths. I was one of the few who didn't really give a shit. I've supported worse actions by other protagonists. But it is amusing now that they ended up killing guys who may have been in Fury's extremely small circle of trust given the absolute secrecy of the base even amongst SHIELD.

Heh, I'm temped to click some of those spoilers, but I'm unsure which ones are actual TWS related spoilers and which are just playful speculation.

I think I'll abandon this minefield until after I watch the movie (hopefully this weekend).

The good thing about not being spoilerphobic is that I just don't care and no spoiler would ever ruin anything for me. I just get more excited the more I learn about it.

I liked this episode. I would also love for May and Coulson to be killed off because they can't act their way out of a box on this show. Damn. It's downright painful sometimes. Skye isn't great, but she's better than those two.
