Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. |OT| Tahiti is a Magical Place (to...Hey guys, I found it!)

Ward is a psychopath with the blood of a disabled, innocent man on his hands in addition to three shield agents he killed in cold blood.

I'm glad the writers didn't even bother trying to keep him as a good guy, he'll do better as a baddie.

Big spoilers. The fate of characters and what happens during the events of TWS are spelled out in the episode.

Not necessarily: (don't read if you haven't seen Winter Soldier)
Fury is not dead, and obviously Zola or at least part of his algorithm is the clairvoyant, Pierce is the corrupt head of Shield whom Hand speaks of... who we have no knowledge of in the show.

So I take back what I said about TWS being spoilery. It's actually damn near genius because if you watch the movie
Cap won but disbanded SHIELD
and if you watch the show only, you see Shield is still alive and kicking but Hydra destroyed it by killing hand and sending the other last remaining head, Coulson, on the run. When watched together you get the full picture.

Personally, I don't think Hand is dead. If so, everyone is going to be flying blind by AOU, unless the heroes find it in themselves to band together without SHIELD.

Did the show ever have Garret explicitly say that he's the Clairvoyant, or that the Clairvoyant and Centipede are connected with Hydra?

It seems like a lot of people are assuming that he is, and that Centipede was just a name the show was using while it couldn't use the Hydra name, but I don't recall any text that explicitly showed that.

I suppose there was the scene where Garret takes credit for Coulson's kidnapping and torture, but I'm not sure that proves that he's the Clairvoyant.

I can still see a situation where the Clairvoyant is a third-party in all this, and it's not Garret.

Why does everyone like Hand so much?

Cause Saffron is hot.
She used to be hotter before she messed up her face.

It's the Faora effect. No matter how underdeveloped, if she a strong, hot woman she is the best thing ever ;P

A quote in this Q&A with Brett Dalton seems to answer that pretty definitively:

“Well, Garrett is the clairvoyant and Garrett is your supervising officer and you trained under him so that makes you also part of Hydra.”

So if Garret was the Clairvoyant.... what was the point of sending Deathlok to attack him in the safehouse?

It seemed like Coulson's team was already going to do the 13 suspects, so it didn't do anything to prod them to action. It also created a chance he'd be killed by Deathlok.

So.... why?

A fellow Hydra agent!

Hail Hydra!

That AA news though is saddening because I still haven't forgiven Loeb for axing EMH for this new crappy version (still better than Ultimate Spider-Man)

Well... we do know that Baron von Strucker is in possession of Loki's scepter, which seems to use the power of the Mind Gem to control people's minds. Maybe Strucker can control Ward through the gem just like Lorelei dominated him in an earlier episode. The Baron seems to also be controlling Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch with it. It could be that Ward will be the lead bad guy in the show until a possible redemption in season 2, once the Avengers take care of Strucker and Ultron in Avengers 2.

Oh, and I'm glad Bill Paxton will still be around.

Who is Baron von Strucker? And is the mind gem an infinity gem? I'm not a comic guy so I apologize.

TWS spoiler
He was the guy with the monocle in the first mid-credits scene. Traditional Marvel Hydra higher-up.

Mind gem is one of the infinity gems.

I like the idea of why he shot that disabled guy was because he was actually Hydra Agent or at least covering for the Clairvoyant, way better than the idea of "I did it for Skye!"

Hail Hydra

The sceptre containing an infinity gem is a dumb idea. If Thanos covets them so much then would he just give one to Loki?

Ok cool. I watched TWS and knew the guy he was talking about, I just don't know who he is in the universe. Did we know that Loki's scepter was an infinity gem the whole time? I remember in the Avengers the alien dude told Loki that they gave him the knowledge of the ancients so I guess that's how we know?

So that means 4 of the 5 gems have been revealed right? Tesseract, aether, mind, and the one StarLord is trying to steal in the trailer?

To throw suspicion off him for the viewers benefit. There's really no interior logic to it, since no one was suspecting him of anything yet. I guess, it could've been planned just in case Hydra's plan goes awry...

The very last shot is a close up of Ward that completely cuts out everything else. I got the impression that it was an intentional way of communicating Ward's mental state; basically, in that moment he was completely preoccupied with the actions he's taken and was blocking everything else out.

But maybe I'm just overthinking it.

I think its a fake out
and Ward didn't really kill them, i think something was planned in advance and Ward is just going in deep cover.

I was thinking that he's a brainwashed sleeper agent for Hydra ala Manchurian Candidate. Seems like he was zoned out during that scene.

1.
We don't know
2.
Presumably it's one of the infinity stones, like the Aether and Tesseract

and is
Red Skull Dead or still alive

Dead until we know better, but the way he went out it could have just been the Tesseract transporting him through space. Violently.

On further consideration, I can live with Ward not being an unambiguous villain, but only as long as his HYDRA arc doesn't end with him becoming a trusted member of the team again, let alone getting to bang Skye. If they go so far as to reveal that he didn't actually kill Hand and the agents at the end of the episode, I might have to put my fist through the screen.

Anyway, there are several interviews up with the producers and showrunners regarding last night's episode, but this CBR Whedon/Tancharoen interview stood out to me for this quote regarding the plotting of the earlier episodes:

For as big as these twists are, they feel like they come from a logical place, and as you said there's been a plan. How far back have you been planting some of these seeds? There was an episode called "Seeds" a couple of months ago, even. Have you been deliberately putting a lot of hints out there to lead to to this point?

Tancharoen: Yes, we have. And I think it'll be interesting for the viewer once they see the big reveal to go back and look at places where those seeds have been planted. In episode #10, there's a nice, private moment that Ward has with Coulson -- they're in Lola, and I think they're going to see a Centipede soldier's sister, and they're just having a conversation, finally, about their personal lives. Coulson brings up that he had someone in his past, a cellist, and that he had dinners at the Richmond, and that's something that comes up later -- that's a tool that Raina uses to help coerce Coulson to get into the machine in episode #11.

And then in "Seeds," there's a really nice moment where Skye is standing at the wall of valor, and we hear Coulson's voice off-camera saying that the world is full of evil, pain, lies and death -- and the camera pans and lands on Ward when he says "lies" and "evil."

Whedon: Because it's a big part of the film, we couldn't really have anybody bad within the organization, we couldn't paint the organization in a negative light, and we couldn't say the H-word. The concept of the Clairvoyant, which I think we mentioned for the first time in episode #5, that whole thing was born out of a desire for us to have our big bad be tied to it, without us being able to talk about it. We came up with the concept of someone who appears to have powers that we can be chasing on our own, and then reveal exactly how they're manipulating things later on. That was sort of our way of…

Tancharoen: Hiding the Hydra bomb.

Obviously, Marvel Studios isn't solely responsible for the weakness of the earlier episodes, but I can't entirely blame the writers for not doing their best work when these are the kinds of constraints they had to deal with.

That was the best episode of SHIELD yet, but I wouldn't call it great or even good.

The show still has a long way to go before it is anything other than a disappointment.

If you don't think this episode was at least good you should probably just find another show to watch.

Why does everyone like Hand so much?

She seemed by far the most competent SHIELD exec, taking charge and making secure HYDRA did not take the Hub while everyone else is running for their lives. And I remember Saffron Burrows being way hotter in Troy then Diane Kruger's Helen.

Too little too late. Can't have brahs just waiting around for 16 episodes until the writers say "this is where it really starts, we just had to fill time until this!" I think ajeph is right though, I will keep watching because Simmons is beautiful.
My man.
It'll still most likely get renewed, but I'm surprised that it didn't get at least a little bump this week.
Me, too.

Kinda sucks, I really liked this ep.

The last person we saw with the staff was Black Widow, she presumably turned it into SHIELD, which means she handed it over to Hydra.

and is
Red Skull Dead or still alive

Well all we know is that the tesseract sucked him through some kind portal. They left themselves an out if they want to use him again, but the fact that Pierce wasn't the red skull (which in the comics his equivalent character was) suggests that they are going to leave him dead.

I'll wait to see the DVR numbers. Even with the TWS tin in being as strong as it is, I'm certain that quite a few viewers recorded this ep until they have time to watch the movie.
