I'm expecting Ward to come back around, though I wish that the show had the balls to stick to their guns and keep him Hydra. We'll see.

Well all we know is that the tesseract sucked him through some kind portal. They left themselves an out if they want to use him again, but the fact that Pierce wasn't the red skull (which in the comics his equivalent character was) suggests that they are going to leave him dead.

Reading TWS interviews
they considered it, but they wanted to keep TWS grounded. Having Pierce reveal himself as the Red Skull throws that out the window. The Skull is basically "dead" until they need him as a villain again.

Ratings are compiled by special boxes that certain people/families have that track their viewing. As apart of that, these viewers have their ages and sex tracked. So when you see the ratings number, it doesn't represent the raw number of viewers but the amount of viewers with the special boxes that are within the age/sex range that the show's advertisers want to market to. I think the most common group is Men 18-49? But it can vary depending on the show and network.

Sure but DVR viewers aren't making ABC any money.

While that's true, DVR does represent the overall popularity of the show and can be useful in other ways. It's pretty clear that Marvel/Disney is looking to play the long game with regards to the MCU, so AoS can still recover once people see how the tone and pace of the show is evolving. Arrow saw this happen when it's first season was added to Netflix leading into S2.

Depends entirely on the network and type of show.

For example, if the CW got 4.9 million to watch Arrow, they'd be throwing champagne and partying it up.

For AoS...that's....okay.

Not bad by any means, but compared to the pilot's ratings, absolutely god awful.

DVR and online streaming actually matter a lot nowadays depending on the network, show, etc. It's saved quite a few low performers the past few years.

Like what?

Online streaming is still a tiny drop in the bucket and all the hype around things like Live+7 DVR numbers is just PR spin. If you aren't watching the commercials within three days advertisers aren't paying any money for you and you're basically irrelevant as a viewer.

The last person we saw with the staff was Black Widow, she presumably turned it into SHIELD, which means she handed it over to Hydra.

Small correction: Alexander Pierce is his own character in the comics, an agent of SHIELD with no HYDRA connections. You might be thinking of Aleksander Lukin, whose mind Red Skull inhabited. That said, there's definitely aspects of Lukin that were integrated into Pierce's character, so maybe that's what you were getting at in the first place.

I'm actually really sad they
killed Hand off. I know there is really no hope for HAMMER in the Cinematic Universe...but I can believe!

Yea thats what I was getting by calling him his 'equivalent'.

I often wondered what the recruiting is like for Hydra? I mean they are a Nazi based organization that doesn't give a shit about anyone below the council.

I think that Hydra is an equal opportunity oppressor these days. They made the point in the first Captain America film that Hydra was breaking away from the Reich, and I imagine that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will not include any lingering Nazi ideology in Hydra going forward. I bet that
Baron Strucker is not a Nazi.

Neo-Nazis are kinda pathetic, to be honest.

It's like every rogue organization. They target the disillusioned members, ply them with promises of a promotion/a better world, use a high ranking officer to sell it, and then they're recruited.

Also limits the ability to sell the show in Germany.

As for the rating, I'm guessing we're going to be seeing some MASSIVE retooling between seasons. I wouldn't be shocked to see them dump at least one cast member and maybe add a new person.

Yeah, they're just opportunistic fascists now.

100% with false positives is safer than 50% correct with no false positives in this scenario. Lots of innocent people will end up dead yes, but it completely mitigates the risk. It's exactly the sort of decision that Victoria Hand would make.

So you are ok with executing innocent people? Then you and Victoria Hand are no better than Hydra.

I think we might see a bump for next week's episode after the twists and word of mouth and whatnot. Plus showing off Hill and
Fury
should help.

This one kind of makes sense to me. They've made it very clear that watching this spoils Winter Soldier, so people may be waiting.
They can try to rationalize the low ratings all you want but if you hang your hat on a hot side character Loeb, then well I have a show on ghe CW to sell you. It's just not a viable strategy in the era of Facebook stalking.

Too little too late. Can't have brahs just waiting around for 16 episodes until the writers say "this is where it really starts, we just had to fill time until this!" I think ajeph is right though, I will keep watching because Simmons is beautiful.

This should've been a midseason show with 13 episodes and no repeats. Premiere in late February or early March with a few episodes introducing the characters and leading into Cap 2, then an action-packed back half that keeps the momentum going.

I think ABC must be expecting it. Aren't they airing this week's episode again before next week's?

Possibly..It's a bit weird. The interconnected stuff with the MCU does kind of put the show in a bit of a bind, though I think they're thinking more long term with it if they're connecting it to everything.

The new side character in Agents of SHIELD Season 2 is Renee Young

Funny, I absolutely hated Ward but am totally fine with him sticking around as a HYDRA baddie. Will be pissed if there's some stupid redemption arc.

Wish Hand was sticking around longer though. I know she's been dead in the comics for a minute now but there were some interesting places they could have taken her.

Don't Fear the Reaper immediately makes me think I'm watching Supernatural.

And now I understand why they shot those innocent guards, they're evil. Hand is probably right and Coulson is also HYDRA.

It's possible Ward and Hand are in on it, though Hand's death looks pretty convincing.

Best way to infiltrate a secret organization is to make a captured enemy escape and lead them to their leaders.

They would not have shown
Hand's body if they did not intend to mislead us. The whole scene was unrealistic. I mean... a professional agent asking another to just "finish the job" instead of a thorough questioning process at least before the traitor is locked away?

They had to be faking it in order to truly get in, double agent-style.
I expect "I might be a double agent, but there is no redemption for me" line from Ward and pity sex from Skye in the next season.
